ATLA Fanfic Recs
In honor of Fanfiction Appreciation Day, I'm going to share my favorite favorites from AO3. We'll get through as many fandoms as I have energy for. I did this a while ago, but I can't find the dang thing again, so here goes.
Carry On For You by Haicrescendo
Pokemon AU that I LOVE. Set after the events equivalent to the end of the series. Sokka is trying to beat all the gyms, and his last one is the fire gym in Vulca. If only he can find the gym leader, dang it. Very cute AU.
The Adventures of Kuzon and Li by whatthedubbs
Parental soulmark AU. A minor biography of Li Huong and to a lesser extent his wife, who really do want children. Many of the children in the 41st legion have green parental soulmarks. VERY cute. Podfic available.
Candles and Boring Games by AlexiHollis
In order to punish Ozai, Fire Lord Azulon gives Zuko to Iroh as a son. Certain things come out about how Zuko was treated when he was Ozai's son. Azulon is a ruthless man when he feels he needs to be.
As the World Should Be by @muffinlance
Azula is born first, and she looks after her little brother. He certainly isn't capable of it himself. Zuko is sent after the Avatar anyway.
Salvage by MuffinLance
Zuko is washed overboard in a storm and pulled out of the sea by Chief Hakoda. The Chief tries to use Zuko as leverage against his father. But the responses he gets back start to worry him. In the meantime, his crew is starting to be less afraid of the young firebender in their midst. Even if he does have a temper.
To Build a Home by orphan_account
Zuko is the Firelord. His generals don't like him, his ministers don't respect him. He's technically underage, but he was underage for his first Agni Kai too. Very angsty.
a nation, held by snowdarkred
The Fire Nation VALUES their children. They educate them, they protect them, they don't send them to war unless they are adults. Firelord Ozai burns his son's face off. There are repercussions. Nothing overt. Not at first.
Safety First by Haicrescendo
Zuko is used to feeling unsafe. Zuko doesn't sleep well. Until he met Toph he had never considered those facts might be connected.
The Family You Choose by TunaFishChris
Soulmark AU that sets the bar for all others. Zuko had soulmarks, but his grandfather burned them off when he was a child. Team Avatar has something to say about that.
A Tale of Earth and Fire by chiiyo86
AU. Zuko and Toph meet on their wedding day. Neither is happy with the situation, but they talk and figure out they at least got an ally out of the situation. Together, they might have a chance to break out of the constraints that bind them.
Embers by Vathara
Epic AU. Utterly massive. SO much worldbuilding, and the author clearly knows a LOT about war and geography and history that they worked into the fic. One of my favorites. The FFN version has all the notes. The link is to the AO3 version.
The Dragon-King's Temple by Kryal
A crossover with SG-1. Not that you need to know anything about SG-1, because I sure don't. Set after the end of the ATLA series when Zuko is Firelord. Includes Zuko and Toph being awesome, some philosophy, and a lot of interesting worldbuilding to add to the complexity. Very good.
Looking Glass Wars by AzarDarkstar
Zuko's mother is gone. His uncle is missing. He runs for his life. Years later, he is a messenger for the White Lotus.
Speech Acts by ferricent
What if bending was like sign language?
Dragon of the Yuyan by 00AwkwardPenguin00
Zuko is hungry. He's been on the run for months. So he sneaks into Pouhai Stronghold for some food, like you do. He is then adopted by a troop of silent ninja-archers. Includes lots of bad jokes, found family, and sign language.
Two Drama Queens Loose on a Shirshu
June and Nyla the shirshu adopt Zuko. Zuko knows the tax code and how to get June out of paying. Zuko is heavily scarred and clearly hiding from the Fire Nation army. June comes to all the wrong conclusions. VERY CUTE.

Thoughts on Malignant 2021
I really enjoyed it, most horror movies I've seen have a slow start and then after half the movie is over with the action starts. With Malignant 15 minutes in and we seeing action. The pacing was AMAZING, it never felt like it was rushing us to the next scene, plot point, or conclusion. And because the pacing was so great the lead up for the characters discovering the truth about Gabriel was satisfying.
Not to mention the cinematography was chef's kisses, I'm not a film nerd or anything but I definitely liked how it was shot. For example, the panning shot with the husband really felt immersive and like you were in the moment. I feel like all the cuts kept you hooked none of them threw a bucket of ice cold water and got you out of the moment if that makes any sense.
Moving on, of course I'm on Team Gabriel, to be a child and just be told he was an abomination and shouldn't exist would definitely do THINGS to your self image and it would fuck you up mentally. I'm glad he got his revenge, he deserved it. I'm also curious what would have happened if he had stayed awake throughout Madison growing up. When they force him into dormancy he technically was a child so when he woke up even if it was Madison's brain he might have processed things in a child like manner. So I'm just curious if he would have grown with Madison and develop along side her would he still think the same way?
My mind is still processing the movie but all I can think about is that Gabriel might have been a physical representation of mental illness or even trauma. When you don't know how to deal with your mental illness or your trauma your life may seem like it is out of your hands like you have no control. You can't do anything about it until you acknowledge it and consciously decide to be better. Whether that means taking up therapy, taking medication, practicing self care, building a support system, etc. You must put in effort to treat your mental illness/trauma. And of course simply because you started therapy or taking medication doesn't mean it will go away.
Which is what we see at the end of the movie. Gabriel isn't permanently gone, he will ALWAYS be there under the surface. But now, Madison has gained skills to properly deal with him if he ever gets out again. Her support system which is her sister and her adopted mother are aware of him as well and can better support her. This is all to say that mental illness sucks ass but once you learn good and healthy coping methods they suck a little bit less and they suck even less when you have a good support system. The important thing is; it doesn't control you anymore. You can live your life breathing a little bit easier as each day goes by and you get better at applying your coping methods to your life.
I feel like this is getting a bit long but I do want to mention that dehumanizing someone for their mental illness is always detrimental for the betterment of said person's health. Which happened to Gabriel, you can't make someone be better by being negative/toxic to that person.
I feel like I can talk more about this movie, different topics I can discuss. Nature vs nature. Historical treatment of mental illness/trauma. I'm sure I'm missing other things but for right now this is all my brain can cook up
