The Kiss Quotient thoughts from a person on the spectrum.
smutty romance book ramblings! + probably terrible humor and puns ahead. may contain spoilers, idk.
TLDR - I liked it, it answered my need at the moment - easy smutty read without too much gut ripping drama and politics, feel good vibes. It was like a nice original characters fanfiction with the usual expected dash of cringe and eye rolling clichés. Feels like it mostly aims for younger audience, but the main characters were 30 or near 30 so it didn't do the infuriating "she was 17 but her birthday is tomorrow so she can legally fuck" thing so that's good!
For years I felt odd that the romance genre haven't suck me in yet. (get get it?? suck nevermind I'll shut up) With all my one-shot-plot what-plot fanfic affection, I thought surely I will be one of them "fairy fucker mafia monster ice hokey girlies". And yet, probably I just haven't been lucky to stumble upon something I really liked. Because I see myself as one of those readers Diana Gabaldon kindly described as "mentally deranged people who don't have the attention span to read one of my books" - Thanks Diana :) always a pleasure. Although I did read her books, but I struggled and for sure skipped ahead (ahem Roger/battles/surgeries/descriptions of which Cameron talked about which political issue/who killed which servant and why - what, who said that..) I need something that makes me feel good from the start, or I can't focus. If it grips my attention, I will read it for days forgetting to eat or sleep. If it doesn't, I could read the same sentence 50 times and not get one word from it, while my brain thinks about swimming in porridge on a pancake boat.
Now look, I had my fair share of smut. Some things I got used to and accepted and some not - I would refer to the wonderful list of cringeworthy names for genitals used in romance books if I could find it! It was in the How I write sex scenes book by Diana Gabaldon :)
So "The Kiss Quotient". Firstly how the fuck do you pronounce that word. When I rambled about this book and was asked, so what's it called? I said hell if I know and showed them the name on the screen lmao. But we already established that I have one brain cell, so...
Anyway, about that book. It was nice to read about a woman on a spectrum and her trying to figure out the world in odd ways, sometimes making obvious mistakes and sometimes making me go "wait, I got it all wrong, just like she did and I'm not sure if it's because it was written vague on purpose to create the confusion, or because of my own autism, because if I was her, I would explain this situation in the same way!" Some of her struggles and characteristics really hit home, some were a bit cliché (she is reeeally good with math and became a piano genius at the age of 5?? really??) but then I read that the author is actually autistic and based these on her own lived experience so ok, "understandable have a nice day"
About the "feel good vibes, no drama". There was some amount of hurt. Family issues, health and economical, illness that had the potential to get under my skin, but it didn't. The main character experienced trauma well known to me, and it could make me weep for other people I know who experienced it, but it didn't. Now why that is, I'm not sure. Is it because the characters ended up a bit shallow and I didn't really cared for them, or because it caught me in the more balanced time of the month, or I just shut down for a time because real life is too much - I don't know. But the bottom line is - it made me feel nice without much else.
As for the sex scenes - they were descriptive, and overall I did like them. There was a focus on them for sure and some bits were off putting, but also funny. The fact that the love interest was "just some sexy bro-dude but sensitive with a good heart" made me chuckle.
The smell thing was hot, because I totally get it! Sometimes someone just smells RIGHT.
Some things that I didn't like: That trope "she is so shy but she looks at me only because I gained her trust, she keeps that smile only for me" yeah bro, that's.. weird. you get aroused by that, good for you, but from the other side I can tell you, it is not fun and quirky and sexy, It's exhausting. "she doesn't look 30 she looks almost 18/ pornstar nipples/ flat tummy" Yeah... YIKES FOREVER. I will pretend you didn't say that dude. Nothing wrong with all these things if you have them, and I totally get the young look, many neuro divergent people look younger, and genetics play a part, but... yeah. not a good look.
The thing about her not having enough agency for herself is annoying for sure "I don't know if I want babies but my mom wants grandkids so I guess I will have to find a husband - oh well. some asshole who makes me uncomfortable said I should have more sex - oh well, I guess I'll do that idk. Wow, what are those - yoga pants? That's genius, I haven't thought about trying them on for 30 years of my life" But I kind of get it. That locking in on something, once it got stuck in your brain, that's it. Everything gets a category and locks down, until something is strong enough to break it and then it can cause chaos.
hmm, what else.. Oh, the thing I like to call "OOGA BOOGA me sTroNg Big mAn" was sprinkled into it. Some possessiveness, and the urge to beat the shit out of anyone who DARES to hurt his love interest, no matter the consequences. Eh, I don't care that much about that. I'd prefer if it wasn't included, but I get it. I also get the urge to beat the shit out of some people who hurt my loved ones, so... sure dude, whatever.
The kissing was hot.
Yeah, that's about it I think :) Overall, the cringe and the "ick" factor was there for sure, but not enough to make me not want to touch anything from that writer again so, I plan to read the rest of her work. It made me feel as if I was eating something comforting and simple like overnight oats or scrambled eggs with ketchup (😏 if you know you know) and that is just what I need right now.

Uhm, look, not to be that creep but the size difference of the hands😳 hello??
Suddenly all those scenes in the books of Jamie carrying old fragile ladies in his arms come to mind.
Especially that one when the nun thought she maybe wouldn't join the monastery had she met Jamie before 🤣

Game ramblings about SOMA
Warning - this game is disturbing, as is the lore of it. I suppose any Outlander fan that may stumble upon this is used to some gory stuff lol. but still.
TLDR: I love Soma, Catherine Chun and Imogen Reed were totally a couple, AI sucks when not monitored.

Highly underrated horror game. I'm not exaggerating when I say the story stayed with me for weeks, gave me existential dread, but also many imagined plots and possibilities. I never play horror or tense games, because, well.. Jumping things that try to kill me don't make me go "oh, I better overcome this challenge", they make me go "ah. well, fuck this then, never wanted to play this anyway. back to stardew valley I go."
So, I watched others play this, and as I usually do, I'm as interested in their reaction to the story as well as the story itself. Recently I watched Jacksepticeye play this, who is a marvel by himself - funny, Irish and makes funny scottish accent everytime scots are involved somehow. chef's kiss. By the way, he mentioned that Catherine may have been autistic and I tend to agree.
Everything about this game is so well done - the lighting, the textures, the sounds, the voice actors. It's so immersive, I can just feel the dread of the endless ocean, the limited vision, the odd perception of the player..
And, in addition to all this, there is more lore to be found at Frictional youtube channel with the amazing "Transmissions" series - fucking scary and now I may have a crush on Imogen Reed. Also she and Catherine were totally together and you can't change my mind. There is the game website as well. Here is a quote from one of the short stories there that just freaked me the hell out:
“Get the tetra. Quick.”   Gavin didn’t understand what was happening. Carl leaped towards him and sank his arm into Gavin’s stomach.   Where was the blood?   “What are you doing?” asked Gavin in shock. “Who is that?” He pointed towards the other Gavin.   “Got it. Almost.” Carl pulled a cord from Gavin’s stomach. It looked weird. Gavin couldn’t move anymore. He was getting really scared. He looked to Meuron. She was avoiding him, trying to look away.   “Meuron! What’s happening to me?”   “It’s okay, man,” answered Carl and reached back into the stomach. “It’ll be over soon.”   Gavin couldn’t make this scene into anything believable. What the hell was happening? The people in the room looked uncomfortable, disgusted even. Meuron was in tears. The other Gavin looked rigid with stress. “Just kill it already!”   It? That can’t be right. I just helped out with the plan. We were getting out. I’m the real Gavin, right? I have to be. I am me. I am Gavin Finley, field service technician stationed at Upsilon, Pathos-II. I’m a real person. I am—
Yeah, so there's that. Also this game came out in 2014 or 2015 but with the rise of massive use of AI in EVERYTHING, I think it is relevant, as it deals with questions like is it wise to let AI decide what is human? what is life and when is it worth living? what is identity?
Also, it deals with identity that tied to a time and place. Are we the same people when we wake up, suddenly alone, in a unrecognisable world? That of course makes me think of Outlander and also about the countless modern AU fanfics. Are the characters that used this way, without their usual elements even worth existing? (yes they are, I love yall, ao3 be blessed)
Also, some really silly absurd fanfic thoughts from sleepless nights. Soma spoilers alert.
What if in the world of SOMA, some desperate researcher that survived on earth finds a way to scan brains using a portable device, then finds the Outlander stones, goes to the past to find unique brainscans of resilient and adaptable people from all the history of mankind. To then bring them back to the future, put them into machines and try and preserve humanity this way, or at least fight the WAU infected creatures.
Then Jamie goes to sleep as usual in his Ardsmuir prison cell and opens his eyes in a place that has nothing familiar to him. I must have died, he thinks.
And maybe, a few rooms apart, Claire opens her eyes, thinking she must have passed out reading her medical book..
