I think my big issue with secret lives of mormon wives is that it doesn't really cut to core of issues in the church. like these women are having difficulties with church culture and Utah culture and things surrounding gender roles and perfection and the commandments. and this is all valid. but there are so many other people, other stories, of people choosing to leave or stay based on xyz issue. the show doesn't show the nuance that can be there when people leave or stay. soooo many of us have complex relationships with the church and it doesn't get to that and I feel like that's the biggest issue with how it portrays us. I really don't think it has anything to do with mormonism at all but it was created on the premise that these women are Latter-day Saints and it dives into this insular culture in Utah where these women are part of a social media group. of course we all know its meant to be inflammatory too. but I don't think its doing us any favor in helping the public to understand the nuances of being a member of our church and reduces us to a Utah-centered close-minded group of people who cannot handle dissent.

What is General Conference?

General Conference is a biannual meeting of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is a time when the entire church gathers to hear talks from leaders, and one of the most exciting aspects is receiving personal revelation. One of the core principles of our theology is the belief that God speaks to us today, and that we can receive guidance for our lives.

You’ve probably seen General Conference trending on Tumblr before, you may be seeing it trending now, and you will see it trending in the future. You could have just finished reading a lot of negative things about Mormonism. Here are a few things us Latter-day Saints would like you to know: 1. We are Christians, striving to follow Jesus’ loving example. 2. We are not polygamists anymore. Early Saints practiced it but we don’t believe it’s necessary today. 3. We are not a cult. 4. We’re striving to be the best version of ourselves. We know that people and institutions are not perfect, and that includes our church. 5. If you seek to learn about our faith, we ask that you learn from both faithful and non-faithful sources, so that you can make the most informed opinion. Of course, we’d invite you to pray and ask God about the truthfulness of our church, but if that’s not your thing, that’s ok.
