A comic for the tltbb! This was drawn for @ace-and-ranty ‘s fic Undetonated. Read it! You’ll love it!
[Photo ID begins: The first image depicts a digital painting of a spaceship. The spaceship is outlined in whites against a black starry background. The ship is badly damaged with a trail of purple and blue smoke coming from the busted engine. Several pieces of debris float around the ship. A faint blue light emanates from inside the ship. The bottom of the image has the blocked outlined title that says “ Undetonated / Story by Ace-and-Ranty / Art by Melli4uhbees “
The second image depicts a 6 panel comic with a black curving shape splitting the screen with several large white letter “A”s to indicate screaming. The first panel depicts a zoom in of Commander Wake’s eye. She is a light brown skinned woman with red messy hair pulled back into a loose ponytail at her back. She is shown to be sleeping but opens her eyes in surprise with the next panel after it is intersected with a “crash” sound effect. She then sits up. She is shown to be wearing a grey three-quarter sleeve shirt and patching pants tucked into black boots. One arm is bandaged. Her shirt has ridden up slightly to show stretch marks across her stomach. She twists around to get up and her hair falls out of its band. She stands looking confused and surprised before her face falls in annoyance with the final panel. The background is a grey of the inside of the spaceship with a soft blue light emanating.
The third image depicts a comic page with 4 panels. The first panel is of Comm. Wake from the back as she looks down at a broken cryo-chamber containing a shrieking infant Gideon. The baby is very chubby and of the same skin tone as Comm. Wake. She has a small tuft of hair at the top of head. She is partially covered by a blanket.; The front cover of the cryo-chamber is shattered on the floor. There is an upclose shot of the side of the cryo-chamber with a screen that says “Power source compromised. Emergency Ejection initiated.”. In the next panel, Comm. Wake leans down to brush away some of the glass and lid and examines the infant up close. The final panel for the page is a close up of the baby. She is crying and has her small hands balled into fists.
The fourth image depicts a 7 panel comic. The first image is of baby Gideon, face in a firm pout with tears in her eyes, which are a soft golden yellow. The adjacent panels are of a black background, a whitish blue sink faucet dripping and a Comm. Wake with a soft looking expression. The next panel is of baby Gideon resuming her shriek crying. The adjacent panel is of a gushing waterfall and Comm. Wake underneath looking both surprised and fed up. The final panel shows Comm. Wake, with a disgusted and slightly angry facial expression, holding her wet shirt away from her chest. She says “ Reproduction is a plague.”
The fifth image depicts a 5 panel comic. The first panel is Comm. Wake bends down to pick up baby Gideon from the cryo-chamber. As she does so she says, “Fuck’s sake, you’re floppy.” Comm. Wake gently lifts Gideon to her chest. Gideon continues to cry and takes a hold of a handful of Comm. Wake’s hair, as Comm. Wake shifts her in her arms to take the weight off her bandaged wrist. The final panel shows Comm. Wake sitting down with her back to a wall, with Gideon still in her arms. The other side of the wall shows a panel of screens and keyboards for an oxygen and recycled air system. The first screen reads “ O2 Supply Low / Approx. 672 hours of Recyc Air remaining”. The second screen reads “Artificial Gravity functioning 100% capacity”. There is a small emergency oxygen tank, above a vent, next to the screens.
The sixth image depicts Comm. Wake holding up infant Gideon, who has ceased crying for a moment to give another pout. She is still holding onto Comm. Wake’s hair. Comm. Wake has an analytical expression with a hint of irritation. She says “If I break your neck, I will not be sorry.” The background is mostly grey and the two figures are softly backlit by a pale blue light.
The seventh Image depicts a 3 panel comic. The first panel is of Comm. Wake setting Gideon on her lap and began to attempt to remove her shirt. The next panel shows Comm. Wakes back which is covered in a healing burn mark, as she has removed her shirt is now visible. The final panel has Comm. Wake from the collar bones up looking off screen with a tired and vaguely dissociative expression, as she leans her head against the wall behind her. Gideon’s hand can be seen resting on her chest. She is breastfeeding off screen.
The final image depicts a 2 panel comic. The first panel shows from left to right, a storage area, an open panel with pipes and wires connecting to the recyc air station, and a silhouette of Comm. Wake and Gideon. The Storage area contains 3 shelves holding an unlabeled box, a stack of folded fabrics, a first aid kit and a few discarded supplies, an upturned box that’s labeling states that it contains 20 rations, and a stack of 8 ration packs. The shelves appear very empty. The screens on the oxygen station read “o2 Supply Low / Approx. 672 hours of Recyc air remaining” and “ Artificial Gravity functioning at 100% capacity. Comm. Wake is saying “At least you had the goddamn sense to be born fat.” The second panel is divided in half by a curving ark of the command center of the ship. The top half shows empty space and several far away stars and speech from Camm. Wake saying “ You’re gonna need it.” There are 5 backlit screens on the control panel, 4 of which have messages. They read from Left to right “ MAJOR ENGINE DAMAGE DETECTED”, “FUEL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION”, “COMPUTER SYSTEM OFFLINE”, AND “NO SIGNAL / COMMS DOWN”. The remaining screen for navigation has been damaged and is cracked at the bottom and shows several bars of color.]

They’re so Orpheus and Eurydice. But like. If Eurydice went willingly down so Orpheus could live, and Orpheus gouged out his eyes so he wouldn’t fail.
Partially inspired by this post and, you know, everything i love being orpheus and eurydice in some way

[...] I wish I could say I was thinking about you. Harrowhark, there was so much I wanted to tell you. I wish that on the edge of an ending bigger than I understood, that I was thinking about you, that the last word on your lips would be me saying your name, taken down to the dark heart of some world beyond. But my whole life and death had come crashing down around me.
