I’m lost in Kdrama Land. Is it a problem? (Please no one actually answer that because I’m not ready for the truth).
I've been addicted to Korean dramas for about 6 months now. When I started watching my first drama, I never thought it would soon turn into something this big.
"It's just another show". It's not like I started watching fiction out of the blue. I always actively watched movies, TV series, and even the occasional soap opera here and there.
But Korean dramas are different. And I'm still trying to figure out exactly what it is that makes them so captivating, to the point where my sleeping schedules and everyday interactions have been affected (currently trying to fix that).
I've thought about the all the whys: is it the 16/20 episode format? Is it the predictability? Is it the inherent Korean culture that shows through? Is it the lack of blunt sexual interactions and the constant teasing that makes it that more appealing? Maybe it's all of these or maybe it's something else.
The fact is that I've watched about 100 k-dramas in the last 6 months (I know, I don't have a life) and I'm not seeing myself stopping anytime soon.
We are constantly bombarded with sex in our Western culture and even if that freedom does have some positive aspects, sometimes I just want to relax on a Sunday afternoon and watch a movie with my parents without having to sit through an uncomfortable sex scenes that come out of nowhere and bring nothing new to the plot. Korean dramas don’t really have that. And to be honest, the teasing aspect of it all makes it somewhat sexier sometimes even if it’s not all up in your face.
So I like the teasing and I like the predictable happy endings and even the predictable sad ones and I love being surprised once in a while.
I love the 16 episode format that feels like watching a long movie, gives us enough time to fall for the characters and connect with them without dragging the storyline around for seasons and years on end. I lost count on the amount of TV-shows I stopped watching because they just became weird after season 3.
Some of these dramas are superficial and cheesy, which is totally fine - everyone needs that once in a while. But others are absolute pieces of art that feel like poetry. I think there is space for everything and, although it has happened very recently, moments where I feel absolutely disappointed in a drama are really rare. (I could go on about The Great Seducer right now, but I’m going to stop myself for now).
I wonder if anyone is even reading this… Let me know if you are and what are your reasons? Why kdramas and not something else? I don’t even know why started typing. I guess talking to my sister and ranting about what we’re currently watching isn’t enough so I’d love to get to know more fanatics!
