i was about... 11? 12? when 9/11 happened and when the Afghanistan and Iraq 2 wars kicked off my most important concern was playing Halo. But all this stuff around the current strikes between Iran and Israel must be what it felt like at the time - hopeless, widespread recognition in the people that this is a huge mistake, and a government that is hellbent on death and destruction doing it anyway.

the other linux adventure last weekend was trying to get sdr++ to start on boot. i've never interacted directly with systemd stuff before and my impression so far is "way too complicated for regular users to touch".

like, to try to run a service on boot with systemd it was making a script that runs the server, testing that it works in userland, seting up the script as a service, configuring the service, and it still didn't work because my server threw some uninitialized variable error that never occurs in userland. i tried two or three times with no success, varying which states were in the "wanted" and/or "before" and "after" fields, no luck.

starting it up with cron was adding one line to a crontab and it Just Werked

I took my little brother (autistic, mostly non verbal) out and he was using his voice keyboard to tell me something, and this little boy (maybe 4 or 5?) heard him and asked me "Is he a robot??" I tried to explain to him that no, he isn't a robot, he just communicates differently, but my darling brother was in the background max volume "I am robot I am robot I am robot I am robot"

I set up an old desktop as a home server over the weekend for my radio receivers and I thought about opening it up to the internet with no-ip or something so I can connect to my radios from outside the home

got about ten minutes into reading stack overflow posts about how to secure a publicly accessible server before concluding "no this is a terrible idea". to do it right would involve basically being a system admin for shits and giggles and that is not what I'm interested in doing.

there's a really interesting phantomSDR project that I might mess around with - my thought is to rent a server from a company, let them handle security, and host the website such that it talks to my local box through a secure connection for the radio feed.
