I’m in The Fifth Step with Martin Freeman at @sohoplace. It’s a two-hander about Alcoholics Anonymous and it’s one of my favourite things I’ve ever done. Working with him is amazing. It’s a surprisingly funny play. And Martin is an incredibly funny man. He wasn’t born and bred in London, but he’s always been down here, and I’ve never met a man who’s better dressed than him.

It makes you feel like you’re dressed like a wheelie bin whenever you’re standing next to him. We went out for a cast and crew dinner the other night and we went to the Wolseley. We went as posh as we could and the pressure was on to be dressed as smartly as Martin. I absolutely failed to compete with him.

There are few plays that make you cry with laughter and sadness at the same time but @jack.lowden and Martin Freeman’s The Fifth Step really does just that.

If you’ve missed the play in London it’ll be out in cinema thanks to @nationaltheatre live in November.

Freeman revealed that he sought guidance from his father Martin Freeman about his career, explaining: "I went to him in the audition part of it, because he obviously hasn't always been Martin Freeman.

"He's had a very normal come-up and faced more rejection than jobs he's got for sure.

Freeman went on to say: "So he was telling me, like mum was, expect failure, because that's 99% of this job and it's not like that's the first thing I auditioned for and got the job.

"I've gone far with things and it's not come good and you've just got to own that man. That's what the job is.

"Nothing's guaranteed, not even that you're ever going to work again so take everything with -".

Barnes playfully interjected at this point, flashing a smile as he reassured Freeman: "You're definitely going to work again."

NT Live will begin its next broadcast season in September with a series of buzzy plays, including The Fifth Step, the latest stage work from David Ireland, which stars Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit).

The play will be released in cinemas from November 27, presented by Neal Street Productions, Playful Productions, and National Theatre of Scotland in association with Nica Burns.
