Taking a delicate sip of her tea, her eyes returned to the pages of her novel, welcoming an afternoon of much needed escapism. But before her mind was lost from reality, an unmistakable whoosh sounded from the foyer fireplace just outside the room. Two pairs of heavy footsteps shuffled against the wooden floors from the hall, beckoning the attention of her and her husband.  

Lucius rose to his feet in a near instant, wand in hand, and began making his way toward the open drawing room doors. “Wait here,” he said to her quietly.  

Narcissa nodded, grabbing her own wand from the table beside her.

“I really think you ought to cut down on your drinking,” Hermione stated as she stood in place, staring back at Draco with a genuine measure of worry that she couldn’t help but feel toward him in a state such as this.   

His murky eyes bore into her while his robed body remained perfectly still. “I appreciate the concern, Granger, but I think I have it well under control.”  

Hermione nearly scoffed at the rubbish declaration. “How have you been sleeping?” she asked.   

A low chuckle bristled from under his breath. “I imagine you already know the answer to that.”  

“Not well, then.”  

“Fucking terribly, if we’re splitting hairs.”

Draco was not evil. A bit of a prick on occasion, sure—especially when it came to her—but his morals had always been pure. He certainly didn't ask for any of this.

Following Voldemort's return during the Triwizard Tournament, Draco uncovers the truth of his family is far different than the narrative he'd been raised to believe. The very last thing he needs is Granger nosing her way into his business while he comes to terms with his new reality. But when Dumbledore approaches him with a critical request, he begins to wonder if a life of evil may be destined for him after all.

Malfoy cocked his head to the side. “What is it you’re doing awake, anyway?” 

Hermione raised her water glass in answer. 

“Right,” he said. Then he slowly surveyed the rest of her body, a temperate smirk tugging at his lips as his eyes traveled downward. “Where’s your nightdress?” he asked.  

“Gone.” Buried away, never to be graced by the light of day again.  

“Shame. I rather liked it.” 

She practically scowled. “Are you making fun of me?” 

“Not at all.” 

“I would appreciate if you removed that dress from your memory entirely,” she stated.  

The smirk on his lips hardly dimmed. “I’ll give it my best attempt,” he said. “No promises, though.”

Draco continued on to the table he’d left Blaise and Theo sitting at in the back. Both of them were eyeing him quizzically as he neared closer, eyebrows raised high upon their foreheads in fascination. 

“Sorry,” Draco said, taking a seat across from them. 

“What the bloody hell is going on?” Blaise asked with a cheeky grin. “You leave to grab more drinks and come back twenty minutes later from the bathroom with Granger...wearing a different shirt,” he noted, peering up and down at Draco’s sweater. 

“Sans the drinks, might I add,” said Theo. 

Blaise narrowed his eyes to a dubious squint. “Good point.”

Theo took another extended inhale of his cigarette.  

“For what it’s worth,” Hermione continued as she peered up at him. “I don’t hate you.” 

His eyes met hers with a staggered warmth. “I’m glad to hear that." 

“That’s all very touching, but let’s see how you feel about that once he beats you in a round of Wizard’s Chess,” Blaise’s voice cropped up from behind them. 

Hermione’s head snapped toward the window to find Blaise’s head popping out, a devilish smirk painted across his face. Theo spun around at the same time, eyeing Blaise with amusement.  

“You’re such an arse,” Theo said with a chuckle. 

“I know,” replied Blaise, unbothered. “So, what do you two say? Fancy a round?”

Malfoy’s lips displayed a sad smile as he grabbed the glass of water and chugged it. Then he reached for the Firewhiskey and poured himself another shot. “Nothing of your concern, Granger,” he said, taking a sip. Then he glanced down at her silk attire for the first time. “In any case, isn’t this about the time you go to sleep? Why the hell are you dressed like you’re planning to head out somewhere?” 

Hermione pinched her eyes and tilted her head in confusion. “What on earth are you talking about?” 

“You’re wearing a bloody see-through dress,” he stated casually. 

“Excuse me,” she shot. “It’s a nightdress, courtesy of Pansy. Who you brought here to supply my wardrobe. And it’s not see-through.” 

Malfoy raised his brows with a weak smirk. “I may be drunk, but I reckon my vision is still working just fine.”

Without hesitation, the room burst into motion as students jumped from their seats to find their partners. Draco considered following suit, but instead he noticed Granger making a prompt beeline in his direction. He crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair as he awaited the arrival of the soon-to-be biggest pain in his arse.   

Which was surely saying something these days.  

Granger’s textbook hit his desk with a loud thud and she pulled up a chair to situate herself across from him.  

“Draco Malfoy,” she said flatly. “Why do you always cross my path when I least desire it?”  

“Is there ever a time that you do desire it?” He raised a brow.  

“Entirely the point.”  

“I see,” he drawled. “Bad luck, I suppose. It seems mine has also run out as of late.”  

“Pity,” she quipped.
