After a gradual shift in the opinions of the press, public, royals and the church, Charles and Camilla were finally able to wed in 2005. Like everything else in their relationship, it wasn’t smooth sailing - the venue had to be changed and the date was pushed back because of the Pope’s death - but when the moment came, the troubles leading up to it seemed to melt away. Instead the focus was on two people who fell in love and chose to be together despite the obstacles.

“This is one of the great love matches. Everyone talks about young love, but this is enduring love of a kind that is rare and wonderful. They are two good, decent, nice people who make each other happy.Their relationship is something good and strong to see.” - Nic Paravicini, The Duchess of Cornwall’s former brother-in-law
♥ Happy 19th wedding anniversary, Charles and Camilla! ♥

Following their respective divorces, Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles planned on soft launching their relationship in November 1997, but plans were shelved after the shocking death of Princess Diana unleashed a wave of hatred towards Camilla. It would be over a year before we would see them together again. Behind the scenes their shrewd PR man Mark Bolland had been building relationships with the press to improve Camilla's image and plan their return to the public eye as a couple. They carefully chose a low key event - the birthday party of Camilla's sister Annabel which was being held in January 1999 at The Ritz - and Mark leaked the date to the press. Hundreds of photographers turned up to get a glimpse of the couple and despite the pictures being fairly innocuous - we don't even see them touch - they were on the front pages of every newspaper the next day. Many outlets even championed their relationship, marking the start of a slow but steady increase in Camilla's popularity.

In June 1994, Prince Charles was interviewed with Jonathan Dimbleby where he confirmed he had started an affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles in 1986. This surprising act was the final straw for Camilla's unconventional marriage and her divorce from husband Andrew was announced in December. In November 1995 Princess Diana then gave an interview to Martin Bashir where she talked at length about her emotional turmoil and her belief that Camilla was at the root of her marital problems. There was an eruption of fury against Camilla and, a month later, Charles and Diana's divorce was announced.

By 1986, Prince Charles and Princess Diana's marriage was over in all but name and both parties started affairs. For Charles, this meant reconnecting with his old flame Camilla Parker-Bowles, whose own marriage was increasingly strained. While the press began reporting on the rumoured marital discord in 1987, Camilla's name wasn't a real contender for mistress until Andrew Morton's explosive book was released in June 1992. At the time the public didn't know of Diana's collaboration with Morton and so the contents were unconfirmed.
In August the Squidgygate tapes confirmed one of Diana's affairs, and the royal couple announced their separation in December. Then in early 1993, Charles and Camilla's infamous Tampongate tape was released (see above).

Before the News of the World’s phone hacking scandal, there was the Camillagate and Squidgygate. In the late 1980s several amateur radio enthusiasts managed to tap into the frequencies of calls being made by Princess Diana and then Prince Charles. They then recorded intimate conversations the royals had with people who were not their spouses - James Gilbert and Camilla Parker-Bowles respectively. The tapes were only published in the early 90s. Unlike the later phone hacking scandal the press did nothing to hide their dubious tactics and the reaction seemed to focus on the salaciousness of the calls rather than the flagrant violations of privacy

After Camilla married Andrew Parker-Bowles she and then Prince Charles remained in touch. Andrew was serially unfaithful and so at some point in the late 1970s Camilla and Charles rekindled their relationship, with Andrew’s blessing. In fact the romance was not detected because their appearances together in the 70s were often with Andrew! This unusual arrangement worked but it was not sustainable. Camilla wasn’t leaving Andrew and Charles still had to find a wife. After marrying Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, Charles and Camilla’s physical relationship ended, but they remained very close friends.

There is a lot of mystery around the first meeting of King Charles and Queen Camilla. Did they meet in 1970 or 1971? At a polo match or at a dinner? It's generally agreed they began seeing each other when Camilla was in one of the off periods from her on-off relationship with Andrew Parker-Bowles, they were introduced by a mutual friend, and their relationship was probably not that long (with Charles mentioning in a letter to Mountbatten it was just six months). The couple were first photographed together in 1972, after a polo match, but their relationship would end later that same year and Camilla married Andrew in 1973 while Charles was serving overseas with the Navy.

Queen Camilla was born Camilla Shand, daughter of army officer turned business man Major Bruce Shand and The Honorable Rosalind Cubitt, daughter of the 3rd Baron Aschombe. While not aristocratic herself, she came from a family with aristocratic links and had an idyllic childhood with her two siblings. She was described as being a boisterous tomboy, but was also a voracious reader who was fond of painting and gardening.
By the time she hit her teens she was well known on the London social circuit. She was confident and charismatic, and known to love a good party. She was even allegedly let go from a secretarial role after coming in late following a dance!
