NEATLINE Introduction
Neatline is an interactive system for the creation of maps no matter the complexity and can also incorporate timelines.  In making a Neatline exhibit, you accept the part of interpreter which plays a important role in bettering the site.  It can work in union with plugins like Omeka to assist digital humanist, web publications etc.  This website promotes being social and creativity since one it is customizable with its a wide variety of designs to attract users while to improving user experiences.  To ensure users have smooth sailing and little to no confusion when using the site there is a detailed tutorial on ‘how to use the plugin’ with the use of questions and answers.
Base maps to conduct your work can either be provide or the site possesses many different base maps which is at your disposal.  How general or localized your analysis is will determine whether you will need geo-reference for your map.
When using satellite imagery, the use of points on mapping sites maybe be a problem because it may not be accurate besides giving the point option Neatline gives the polygon option.  Polygon outlines the city/country you are trying to plot.
Neatline gives the option of the date ambiguity gadget which permits you visually communicate any uncertainty you have inside your timetable. This is an extraordinary approach to abstain from deluding clients with false specificity.
With Neatline one is able to control how a user will view their map with the use of their map focus which points them in a particular perspective settings on your map, guaranteeing that those spatial representational they perceive matches the things or records you matched with it.
In the beginning, it might appear superfluous or unreasonable with the wide variety for features Neatline offers but we are to keep in mind that maps and timelines are not objective images, but visual translations of time and space.

What We Think We Will Build and What We Build in Digital Humanities
Designing a website in cooperates the layout, colours, fonts, and other design elements of a website.  The demand for commercial designers has increased because a website in today’s age has become a must since it more convenient.  A website displays a straightforward role of your page.
Although a site design does not define a good business, it is important.
Jakob Nielsen and Steve Krug have concluded that users look to the web for a site with no frustration.  I consider that true, when searching the web I look for a website that gives me exactly what I am looking for.
attractive possibility that every site, on any topic, can look beautiful and unique. We all want to be creative and, as we have already noted, we have definite notions of beauty on the web.
The font used is based on one’s taste but san-serif is considered the most readable and uniformed. Sans-serif fonts found on most computers include Verdana, Arial, and Helvetica; common serif fonts include Times, Times Roman, and Bookman.  In my school, we use Times New Roman, font size 12 in the colour black to turn in assignments. With the web one can use any font, font size of colour they desire, although the colour black/ near-black or even white on a black background is recommended.
The South Korean poet and web designer Young-Hae Chang states ‘the biggest art space is the web. The greatest chance to say something or to make something dumb.’
Design in the service of historical understanding is a difficult task, the expectations of visitors must be kept in thought when building the website.  The building the site relevance of the information on the site important.
After all the techniques it has to be put together properly in an understandable manner including all of the pieces including the text, images and multimedia and navigation the results can be both visually appealing and informative.
You would think that’s all but there is one step making your site accessible so your work can be seen.

Digital Humanists Projects: Types
Now that we are aware of how to build an audience in my previous blog, we will be learning how to about what digital humanists do. The Center of Digital Humanities (CDH) states that, “Digital Humanities (DH) interprets the cultural and social impact of new media and information technologies, as well as creates and applies these technologies to interrogate cultural, social, historical, and philological questions”. Therefore the digital humanists are the scholars and researchers behind DH. Theses scholars create a wide variety of about 9 project types based on Paige Morgan’s article, ‘What Digital Humanists Do”.
A knowledge site is a simple site with information on a topic/s within the same subject area. This project is not the largest, however in order to keep it long-term it must be updated and the relationship between the audience through forums, question and answer system must be established. Also, platforms such as Omeka, Wordpress, Scalar which are ready made or HTML/CSS that is bespoke can be used.
A digitized version of text/s based project may require the help of colleagues according to the amount of information. In addition this project is especially important as we move toward the digital age, access to ancient and historic work can be difficult to find online, but this project makes it accessible.
The database assignment is a collection of data usually consisting of images, bibliographic and numeric information. MySQL program and PHP script language can be used, but the magnitude of it depends heavily on contributors knowledge of the various programs.
One may consider this next project as the ‘Variety Project” however Paige Morgan describes it as semi-linear, customization narrative that includes text, images, audio, and/or video. It give readers more options and welcomes an audience with numerous learning modalities.
Large-scale text analysis and topic modelling projects aim to improve scholars perspectives on text. This project is time consuming since it requires a lot of analysis, however people gain much knowledge from such tasks.
A geographic mapping project is always fun to work with, where creators plot information about a topic in relation to it’s location. Neatline and ArcGIS are convenient software to use. An example of such is Carisealand, a conservative and environmentally friendly project, invented by Create Caribbean Research Institute.
The digital 3D model, gives readers and scholars the opportunity to experience areas based on archaeological/historical data in real time. Most of these projects are immense, such as Digital Karnak, however, a massive supportive is usually backing it.
An online event can be compared to a facebook live session but more efficient and professional. The creators must have a captivating topic of discussion to keep the energy and conversation slowing.
The final project is a crowdsourcing project such as wikipedia. This project is  developed and supported heavily by the public. While being a massive project, staff members must ensure the accuracy of the content published.
Every project type has it’s own audience despite the sizes, all can be successful. Success can be acquired by ensuring that contributors are aware of the various software and updates. Also, Digital Humanist deal with a variety of project and each one has a unique feature.

Designing Sustainable Research Projects
Digital humanities projects and publications need to know the research objectives and available technologies or resources.  A digital collection involves many interrelated activities.  Examination of the information will educate investigation of the objectives.
Humanists examine human artifacts. Any object created by humans which may be a primary object of interest or serve as proof of human activities, would be considered an aritfact. Users are the creators and must maintain the project. User functions into three types: querying (question/ evaluating), rendering, and navigation. Rendering and querying are two primary operations performed on XML-encoded textual documents. Economy must also be considered when completing these projects.
Data must not be simply entered into computers, but additional data must use. Data in databases are thoroughly organized and orderly and most chronicled archives and records basically. The information in computers exists in a coded form which is mechanically read and processed by the computer, with the use of the binary system.
Information represented in databases is characterized as "data-centric", and information represented in mark-up technologies is characterized as "document-centric."  File data controls the files used to store digital information.
Descriptive data function as a scholarly surrogate for an object and is needed to distinguish objects used in building as well as objects digitally represented in a research collection. In computerized research recording and monitoring the sources and evidence utilized as a part of making a research project is as critical as it is in conventional research.
A procedure where collaboration is utilized build up the venture is known as collaborative design.  Collaboration exhibits challenges most humanists generally work alone and share the research's results, not the procedure.  A challenge of collaboration is balancing individual interests and shared objectives.
The distinction between document-centric and data-centric information, although it is useful, it proves to be problematic. It is a valuable refinement since it highlights the qualities of markup dialects and databases, in spite of the fact that it doesn't reflect data reality, all things considered.

What digital humanist do
Digital humanities is an activity which brings ditigal technologies together and humanities.
To start with digital humanities and being successful at it one should begin with a head set. They should have an idea of what they want to achieve and what technical skills are needed.  Digital humanities projects will assist and increase one’s knowledge on all types of useful tools and diverse technologies at one’s disposal that they can use.
Raw material is needed to prepare digital humanities.  According to teachinghistory.com, ‘Primary sources are materials directly related to a topic by time or participation. These materials include letters, speeches, diaries, newspaper articles from the time, oral history interviews, documents, photographs, artefacts, or anything else that provides first-hand accounts about a person or event.’.
There are many useful tools to improves one’s editing and to make the work easier to understand.  If site is need for mapping, presenting maps and geographic data on a particular topic or text, a useful tool which can be used is neat line.
A tool used for referencing authors is great when it comes to siting.  Topic modelling is technique used in imputing statistical analysis.  Charts can be used in that case or 3-d modelling may be needed to show more details of a particular area based on historical data, city engine can be used. This tool allows users to explore the space as if they were there, in a form that makes the graphic appear to be physically present.
Adding more graphics such as hotographs, video, and sound, can make it attractive and encourages viewers to read its sections in different order, according to their interests or what they would prefer.
It may also be easier to use online events which is a gathering which takes place via internet this maybe more convenient for some  people.  People are encouraged to collaborate on a particular project or goal, this technique saves times.

Race
According to Wikipedia race is ‘the classification of humans into groups based on physical traits, ancestry, genetics or social relations, or the relations between them’.  I consider someone’s race their self-identity.  Many people are multiracial (mixed race) which means they may have a mix of different cultures they adapt to. Race plays a tremendous role in shaping culture, it will influence the people’s norms, values, beliefs, or expressive symbols.   It impacts the music we listen to, how we dress or even the foods we eat.  I believe everyone should be proud of their race no matter what because each race has something about them which makes them unique and makes them what they are today.  The traditions that we have adapted we can name a few which are link to our ancestors which have been passed from generation.
In high school or primary school, you might have noticed that someone who was ‘different’ or was not considered ‘normal’ was bullied. That person believed they were superior to the other person who they bullied because they were different, this is basically my idea of racism.  Why are there all institutions based on race?
The four major races of the world are white/Caucasian, mongoloid/Asian, Negroid/Black and Australoid. What would the world be like without any races?  Without any races, I think the world would be like the book ‘The Giver’, colourless and the dull.  The different races of the world bring diversity and different cultures.  Many people have been intrigued about learning trying out the culture of different races such as Hispanic food.  Different races’ way of life is being taken interest such as the popularization of African music and cloth.
Many races stereotyped such as Mexicans came into America illegally, all Arabs and Muslims are terrorists, Asians like to eat rice and know karate. Sometimes I wonder what are the stories behind all these stories.

This is an informative blog on howto capture the audience and the most important things to look for to builds ones audience. I found it Interesting that competition played a role in the audience. Observation of why majority of visitors approach the site and return is an important aspect as stated in this blog
How to build an audience
The previous blog titled ‘The 10 Reading Revolutions Before E-Books’ simply describes the advancements and technology that led to e-books. Though this blog is not about reading it highlights the key pointers that help build an audience, hence it can be thought of as the ‘Revolutionizing the Internet Audience’
In every presentation, whether it be a speech, blog post or a website there is always an audience to attract. In order for there to be an audience the author/creator must develop a main objective for their writing. However, the so called ‘wrong’ audience can be engaged, but is it really the ‘wrong’?. No, simply an unexpected crowd and in that case the author can improve their writing to a more direct topic rather than a broad one.  In the case of a website, the crowd will be much more difficult since there is a plethora of other sites with similar content. The size of the audience should not intimidate the writer but the community and purpose should be focused upon.
In focusing on the community of a site one must know how to connect with their audience. Connecting means reaching out to that crowd, by going to the place they are and being a part of their interests. Also, in order to connect effectively with the audience the author must collaborate with their ‘competition’ and participate in forums that will help to improve and attract a larger audience. Another useful way to connect to the audience is via Mass Marketing where the site is published on social media, television and radio. However, the site must be marketable, hence authors must ensure that their work is news worthy. In addition, understanding the secrets of search engines such as google can better the chances of your website showing up on the first page. As authors build their audience it is extremely important to keep their audience via return traffic. Web creators can update the site regularly while keeping the main theme, as well as current posts, discussion forums as well as contact information so that readers and followers can develop a relationship with the creator/s of the site. These simple enhancements will definitely keep followers and bring more! Moreover, as traffic increases on one’s site it is necessary to get an understand of how many people really visit the website. The use of ‘server logs’ help to record these numbers, multiple log software are available online for downloading. However, technology is subject to misinterpretation and a more direct approach through questionnaire, guestbook and other material will give the author a better response.

Building an audience
It is difficult task to capture the audiences attention, to get their attention one was think who is the desired audience and what is the best way to reach them.  By completing many simple daily task we are receiving training.  To build an audience for your site one must closely track how well you are meeting your goal and better your site over time to better suit your audience.
Some historians consider design to unnecessary and a state a sight that of value will have an earnest audience who will herd to the site without the need of any help.  The criterion for judging good historian work should not be based on the size of its market. One benefit of the web is that it is able to reach little and the targeted audience while saving money.  Although the world of web is gradually getting bigger, it is not guaranteed the target audience of your site will get to you synchronously. Getting to your desired audience is more or less endurance and constancy.  A hard to find or use site will have less people who are willing to pay.  A site is deemed successful based on how well the information is received and how well the audience. understands.
By how well your site is used should be encouraging and help to tell you how successful your site is. The purpose of your site should be well indented, it is a useful skill to be able to pick out the majority of your visitor’s interest and be flexible towards that or redirect your focus of your site.  Getting your audience to return to your site regularly and contribute to its success is an important way of improving.  Visitors play an important role in outlining your strengths and weakness and will assit in you building and maintaining an audience.

I found it interesting that so many shifts took place for the paper as we know it today was made.  In your blog i liked that you emphasized on the importance of these revolutions.  This brought a new appreciation to the art of how the book was created and the appreciation even though technology has advanced and E-books are made.  From making of paper, to creating of alphabet and to creation of printing, the 'reading revolution' *is and inportant accesss to literature.
The effect of the Reading Revolution on the Digital Age
As the years go by revolutions are constantly occurring whether we’re aware of it or not. We are currently in the digital age where almost everyone has a smartphone, tablet, laptop or just some device. But have we ever stop to think of the revolutions which led up to the digital one?
I certainly never did, however I recently read an article about the “10 Reading Revolutions before E-books” as class requirement. I believe that this revolution started when our ancestors used symbols and drawing to communicate, even the Mayans and Aztecs used this method. Now we’ve advance to a universal alphabet.
There was the print revolution whereby words and symbols were printed on papyrus or large sheets of paper. In fact they progressed from papyrus to parchment to paper. We have improved further as we now have digital books better known as e-books.
Our ancestors were happy to move away from scrolls which were often difficult and messy. Imagine using a scrolls in this age to simply find the definition of words, one may have to go through 10 scrolls, reading each one thoroughly hoping that the definition is somewhere. However the change from scrolls to codex was seen as necessary and much easier. This made reading more encouraging due to its simplicity. But what would our forefathers’ reaction be to an even simpler technology, like the internet?
We complain that books are heavy but our ancestors were grateful for such materials. How would we react if went back in time to the centuries of such technology? To some extent have reversed centuries, but we’ve merely upgraded the system. You are currently scrolling down to continue reading this blog, just as how you would have to open up a scroll.
The industrial revolution also occured where massive steam presses printed newspapers and books that was a time consuming and dangerous job. Nonetheless it existed, but in the 21th century there are machines the will print material with little to no human interference.
It is truly amazing how every revolution impacted the digital age, because without the alphabet and hieroglyphics there would be nothing to read of the screens. The size of a revolution does not affect the influence.

10 Reading Revolutions Before E-Books
German Historia Rolf Engelsing made famous “reading revolution” which was shift from intensive reading to extensive reading which he called “Lesenrevolution”.  Many historians displayed their own idea of “reading revolution” but its “real” meaning is let to discover.
Johannes Gutenberg introduced the “print revolution” which proved to a difficult piece of equipment but print changed and improved readers' expectations of texts.
Scripts allowed the exchange of symbols for sounds. The first decent alphabet was brought about by Greeks, every single alphabet and abjad can trace itself back to the same Semitic roots.
The ‘rolled scroll to the folded codex’ shift were cheaper, easier to read and carry.  Anagogic readings were easier, thus, Christians spread the codex all through the Roman Empire.
Papyrus was swapped for parchment but later paper was popularized.
My favourite revolution being the industrial revolution, brought about steam powered presses were invented and papermakers improved paper quality as time went on.  This is when technology was booming.
The time taking to create what was needed for reading and parchment was just plain heavy and difficult to get from place to place there was paper, radio, and television became a more favourable means of communication.
In the electronic age an entire new family of audio-visual media turned out to be more important to culture even as content kept on multiplying. The change of alphanumeric content to binary languages, content written to be "read" by PCs instead of people, and increasing the reading amount and writing. we perform on screens.
The vertical way of writing was not always popular, in the past horizontal writing became famous. Many experiments were conducted to perfect or improve the reading revolution.  Numerous revolutions took place to perfect reading which many people do not see its worth and importance. This is a revolution which contains the history of the book, from manuscript scrolls on papyrus, graffiti on the walls all the way to texts and image on one single screen.
