Okay, time to end the torture! LOL!! Where is Georgie?? He is in the lower left hand corner of the pic. Still can't find him? Look between the rocks for a small vertical white band. There is a larger triangular shaped rock on the very bottom that if you go straight up from there about an inch you should see it. Look very closely. That is him. As difficult as it is to see it in the picture it was almost as difficult to see in real time. Fortunately we saw him crawling. Would that I had my camera instead of my brand new I-phone but I had to use what I had in my hand at the time.

Here is a shot of the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope at Kitt Peak, Az., 56 miles southwest of Tucson. The scope extends 200 feet up from the ground, which you see here, and then goes another 300 feet below ground where there are mirrors that send the images to viewing plates for the astronomers. At the top is the 3-mirror heliostat that gathers the image. Dedicated in 1962 it is now being replaced by several other solar telescopes with much updated technology, one of which is in Hawaii. There are several other very large telescopes at Kitt Peak with tours available and also an evening where one can spend the night viewing the starts close up. Well worth the drive.

An Introduction To Architectural Photography

There’s no denying that nature is full of beauty worth photographing. And many professionals make their living doing just that. But not all beauty is contained within nature. The work of man can be towering, impressive, awe-inspiring, and worthy of photographing. That is where architectural photography comes into play.

Architectural photography is a niche of photography with a subject matter that focuses on buildings and other human-made structures. It is not confined to a specific period or architectural style. The only real requirements are that the result is aesthetically pleasing and that architecture is involved. In this way, it is no different than any other specific niche of photography.

A Brief History

Many would consider architectural photography to be the oldest form of photography. The earliest surviving permanent photograph was taken between 1826 and 1827. Joseph Nicephore Niepce in France captured it. The picture is the view of several buildings from within the Niepce estate.

Architecture has been the subject of many well-known photographers over the year. Humankind has always had an appreciation for architecture and the role that these structures play in various cultures. In the worst cases, the structure may one day fail, but there is hope that the memory will remain in the photograph.

The complexity of architectural photography evolved alongside that of other photography niches during the 20th century. Cameras were becoming more capable, and photographers were discovering new ways to capture their subjects. Before the 20th century came to an end, architects were putting to hire the best architectural photographers to capture their work in the best light possible.

Subjects And Techniques

Most architectural subjects can be placed into one of two categories: modern or old. Though, in reality, it’s not always so easy to establish the difference. To some, anything built before the 20th century could be considered old architecture. Others might push that lining back even further. The significant difference between these subject types isn’t necessarily their age, but simply the complexity and style of their design. Modern architecture provides more opportunities for experimental and abstract photography techniques. Meanwhile, older buildings seem to look best when photographed simply and straightforwardly.

The decision must be made whether or not the architecture should be framed with its surroundings. This is known as putting the architecture into context. Framing a building with its surroundings will require a wider shot and can detract focus from the actual subject. It often depends on the message that the photographer is trying to convey with the image.

Lighting can be tough to master because it’s impossible to change the position of the building or to have a significant influence over the lighting. The lighting typically comes from the sun, the moon, or any external lights that already exists. Architectural photographers rarely have the funds to light the building themselves. Nonetheless, they must find the best times and best angles to capture the lighting that they desire.

Whether it’s the lighting or nature itself, there are some obstacles faced by architectural photographers. Somehow, they always seem to capture their subject matter in incredible ways. The next time that you see a photograph of a building take the time to stop, appreciate the image, and consider the difficulty the photographer faced in securing that picture.

When it comes to the beautiful planet that we have the privilege of calling home, there is nothing that captures the presence of natural wonder like landscape photography. Landscape photography can range from microscopic subjects to subjects that are large and majestic, such as mountains and bodies of water. No matter which approach a photographer takes, they show the beauty of the world within their art. Landscape photography takes creativity and inspires.

The world that we live in is full of mystery, majesty, and wonder beyond compare. Earth is our home, and it is ever changing. Sadly, the touch of humankind has made many of the changes that we see full of destruction and harm. Many photographers have chosen to stand by the viewpoint of preserving nature as they see it, much like a time capsule, and promoting awareness of just how much Earth needs our help to reverse these changes. It only takes one image to evoke a thousand emotions, which honestly speaks to the creativity of each artist that chooses to use nature as their subject when capturing photographs.

Other times, a landscape photograph can be unspeakably joyous. An image of nature can go hand-in-hand with the personal experience of the photographer and preserve a beautiful moment in such a way that it lives forever. For example, those who travel can take a photograph of nature so that they never forget the admiration and awe that they felt at that exact moment. That joy shines through, and those who view the photographs can experience that joy for themselves through the photographer’s chosen art form.

Of the same vein, landscape photography has the power to inspire those who view the images and other photographers themselves. Seeing the world as it is, and understanding the message that is being conveyed by the photographer, can move individuals to preserve our natural home and work toward undoing the damage that humanity has done. How else can landscape photography inspire? Many photographers have viewed an image and become encouraged to begin their journey by capturing pictures of the great outdoors. Thus, through appreciating another’s art, they have found their voice and perspective and joined in bringing creativity and joy to the rest of us.

In conclusion, there is beauty everywhere around us. All that is needed are eyes that can stop and recognize it. The next time that you are outside, stop and gaze at the sky. Witness the majesty that can be seen in a blue sky hosting a mass of gorgeous, fluffy white clouds. Experience the symphony of colors that blend to create a sunset, something many of us take for granted. Find a universe hidden within a single flower, or an empire in a stream of water. Find your voice and see the world for what it is. Perhaps you, too, will be able to preserve the planet that we call home in photographs and move others to do the same.

Just a note about theft. My wife left her purse in her car when she got out to go to work Monday. She didn't remember the purse until American Express called that afternoon to ask her about a large purchase at a local store. Apparently it would have been an unusual purchase so they called to ask her if it was her. Obviously it was not. That night she spent hours on the phone with credit card folks and others to make them aware that any purchases made were not hers. Tuesday she had to take the day off to go over to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get a new drivers license among other places to get things taken care of. Not a fun few days for her. Bottom line, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PURSE OR ANYTHING ELSE IN THE CAR WHEN YOU LEAVE IT. EVEN ON YOUR OWN DRIVEWAY. There are idiots out there to take what is not theirs.😈
