“ i do know that, ” ian confirmed, a small smile gracing his lips as he remembered a simpler time when they were kids. a certain memory stuck where their mom took them out to dinner and ian watched on as barley flipped through a sticker book. they got in trouble for putting one on the side of the booth and ian found himself putting stickers on his water bottles in adulthood as a result. “ what do we have today ? ”

🚐 ⠀  ⠀ ⠀  ⠀ ───────────   “ ‘course you do. you’re my little brother. you know too much about me. ” barley smiled as he pulled ian into his side and ruffled his hair up a bit. the eldest lightfoot was a big kid at heart but he had never stopped to think why. the obvious answer was indeed the fact that barley had to grow up faster to take on a role he wasn’t ready for. so simple things like stickers brought him joy and reminded him of the moments in his adolescents where he did feel like a kid.  “ we got some classic dinosaur stickers today. felt like going back to my dino era for a moment yanno. ”

Wednesday didn’t much care for these sort of things. In fact it seemed all so trivial and she certainly didn’t understand the paired thing.. likely to make sure people felt obligated to go. It was awful enough she saw some ball outfits she rather liked and hated internally admitting too. She cocked her head at the stranger and nodded. He did look very nice. “Barley what?” She asked. “Wednesday it’s nice to meet you. Shall we go?”

🚐 ⠀  ⠀ ⠀  ⠀ ───────────   barley   took   in   the   sight   of   the   person   he   had   been   paired   up   with.   her   vibe   felt   very   doom   and   gloom   bit   he   could   rock   with   it.   barley   was   notorious   for   his   upbeat   optimism.   it   was   almost   too   annoying   at   times.      “   lightfoot.   barley   lightfoot.   nice   to   meet   ya.   ”      he   grinned.      “   wednesday.   that’s   a   sick   name   !   how’d   you   get   stuck   with   that   ?   ”      he   asked.      “   yeah   sure.   uh   where   are   we   goin   ?   ”

ian had every intention on working tonight, blissfully unaware that the full moon ball was even taking place until a couple nights ago. but the weekly meeting he had with his boss on friday changed the trajectory of, well, everything when he offered ian a permanent manager position in elias. the raise alone made him agree right away, knowing that he could use the money … but now he had to tell everyone. at least, with the majority of the city under one roof, he was able to convince the owners to close the tavern for the night. 

running into barley, while expected to some degree, threw him off balance for a second - but he matched his brother’s smile at the compliment as he looked down at his own outfit. “ do you you think so ? i feel kind of underdressed compared to everyone else … i just bought this for work. ” his gaze fell to barley’s sleeves, smirking as he pinched a bit of fringe between his fingers. “ let me guess - penny’s entire outfit is made out of this pink stuff. ”

🚐 ⠀  ⠀ ⠀  ⠀ ───────────   seeing   ian   smile   back   at   him   put   barley   at   ease.   even   with   everything   that   was   going   on   he   missed   ian   dearly.   he   missed   his   little   brothers   smile,   his   laugh   but   most   of   all   he   missed   his   best   friend.   seeing   ian   again   when   he   initially   returned   was   bittersweet.   a   moment   that   had   been   replaying   in   barley’s   mind   for   quite   some   time.   the   phoenix   gem   was   supposed   to   bring   them   closer   together.   however,   it   felt   like   it   had   only   succeeded   in   driving   this   unneeded   wedge   between   them.   

“   ‘course,   bud.   you   know   i’d   never   lie   to   ya.   hey,   who   cares.   you   look   great   and   that’s   all   that   matters.   how's   the   tavern   ?   ”      he   asked.   the   older   lightfoot   couldn’t   help   but   chuckle   as   ian   messed   with   his   sleeves.      “   you   think   she’d   wear   any   other   color   ?   ”      he   teased   with   a   smile.      “   yeah   it   is.   i   let   her   dress   me.   she’s   got   a   better   sense   of   style   than   i   do.   ”

🚐 ⠀  ⠀ ⠀  ⠀ ───────────       after   his   first   encounter   barley   followed   the   directions   to   where   he   was   to   meet   his   second   partner   pairing   of   the   evening.   honestly,   the   idea   was   cool   to   barley.   he   really   didn’t   have   any   bad   blood   with   anyone   in   town   so   he   felt   he   could   be   paired   with   anyone   and   have   a   nice   time.   he   felt   he   might   have   spoke   too   soon   when   he   saw   his   little   brother   walk   up   towards   him.   it’s   not   that   barley   didn’t   want   to   see   ian.   he   did.   it’s   just   that   things   were   awkward   between   them.   barley   was   never   good   at   articulating   his   feelings   so   he   didn’t   know   how   to   say   the   right   things   to   ian   when   he   so   desperately   wanted   to.   it   felt   like   now   was   his   chance.      “   ian,   hey.   ”      he   greeted   with   a   small   smile.      “   look   at   you,   kid.   you   clean   up   nice.   ”      he   could   hear   their   mom   fawning   over   ian   in   the   distance.

🚐 ⠀  ⠀ ⠀  ⠀ ───────────   barley   had   no   idea   why   he   was   given   envelopes   upon   arriving   but   he   was   curious   now   !   it   had   been   a   while   since   a   ball   had   taken   place.   this   time   he   was   officially   dating   penny   so   it   was   pretty   exciting   if   he   did   say   so   himself.   he   went   to   the   gardens   as   instructed   and   waited   for   the   other   half   of   this   paired   interaction.   it   took   a   while   but   soon   he   was   face   to   face   with   a   stranger.   cool   !      “   hey   !   looks   like   we   got   paired   together.   i’m   barley.   nice   to   meet   ya.   ”

" hey   !   everything   alright   over   here   ?   "   he   asked   with   a   smile.   "   sounds   like   your   car's   not   too   happy   with   ya.   "

Open / Car Trouble

Vanellope leaned out of their car, listening intently. They stomped on the gas pedal, letting the engine rev and echoing down the street, bouncing off buildings and earning them some glares from passers-by.

Grimacing, they let up on the pedal, then stood, walking around the front of the car and scratching their head. Getting down on the pavement, they wiggled underneath on their back, booted feet and ripped tights sticking out from under the car while they checked the exhaust.
