“#Hellomynameis Emmanuel Olunkwa (@stop__ok). I’m 21 years old and attending college in New York City. I’ve been described as a photographer, but I would say I’m more of a visual artist and writer. I like creating in any way that I can. The people in my pictures are mostly my best friends — my muses. I spend so much time with my friends, so it made sense to start with them.
I got my first film camera at age 12 and my first DSLR camera at age 15. I remember begging my mom to buy me one. At first, I was planning on going to school for creative writing, but during my gap year, I began relying on pictures rather than words to express myself. Since I’ve moved to New York, I somehow wound up working in fashion, but I don’t want to limit myself to one profession or doing one thing. I’m interested in and want to try everything.
In terms of color, I am obsessed. I am not necessarily more keen to shoot bright colors versus pastels or neutrals, but I am interested in color and composition in general. I am a minimalist at heart and in my everyday. I try to strike a balance between less is more and more is less.”
