❤️Okay here is my long ass stream of consciousness essay on SZA’s lovely new album that I sent to my friends hehe:
I had this observation (this is an essay lmao) that some of her songs were heavily inspired by other artists and genres of music. Let me preface this by saying that this is not me comparing sza and talent comparisons, but more like comparing the natural similarities in music. My neurodivergent ass is always thinking of the most oddly specific intricate shit when it comes to music composition as a whole. it was nice to hear that she switched it up a bit. I fkn love the r&b magic that is her music.
Then there’s ‘F2F’ which is def also like one of my favs off the album, and that one immediately reminded me of Haley Williams or even Avril in a weird way. It even gives like early 2000s teen movie vibes. Or Like early 2000s alt pop vibes ya know? I really want to discuss this with y’all bc we all seem to like this one a lot. She really fed us with that one☝️ Honorable fucking mention to ‘Low’ bc that shit slaps.
‘Special’ is very original but also reminds me a bit of kehlani for some reason? The ‘it was good until it wasn’t’ album vibes fs. They both are totally are my favs. I think there’s definitely a better example than that though. I also like this artist called Zeph and they sing this little song called ‘what does he have that I don’t’ and the songs are diff vibes but I like the similarities with the vocals and the tempo and stuff. I fkn love special brooo it’s like one of my absolute fav tracks.
Now, ‘Too Late’ is something that specifically reminds me of an R&B artist and like she sampled from a specific song as well, but I’m not 100% remembering who that person is… WAIT omg its definitely Mrs. Independent by Neo,, duhhhh. It actually sounds a lot like that song fs, maybe she even sampled🐛 like actually I recommend yall to go listen and compare the two as well. This observation might be pretty spot on.
This is sort of an irrelevant observation from my dad; he says that all of SZA’s songs sound the same and I suppose he’s not entirely wrong but he’s not a fan so he doesn’t really get it. He doesn’t get that this is consistently why a lot of people are into her music.
Now ultimately, I will second guess all these observations later on but I really appreciate being able to discuss with the hoes about this beautiful piece of art. Thank you mommy SZA, you really ate.
Discuss in the comments if you you disagree with any of these hehe. This is so manic of me to write all this but thank you all for coming to my ted talk. 💅🏽😄🫶🏽
