just because you don’t look like somebody who you think is attractive doesn’t mean you aren’t attractive. flowers are pretty but so are christmas lights and they look nothing alike

I read this as a kid and it had a really significant effect on me and and it’s a big influence on my world view and I still think it’s the most beautiful and profound thing anyone’s ever said about beauty

Jonathan Cott: Do you think the future is going to be dangerous? Carl Sagan: Absolutely. The present is quite dangerous also, though. Let me give you an example. I think it’s clear that none of the forms of government that exist in any of the two hundred or so countries on the earth today are applicable to the middle of the next century. Not a one. We have to get from here to there somehow. How can you do that without disturbing the here? The world is changing at an incredibly rapid pace. Human survival depends on dealing with those changes, but governments generally are concerned with changing nothing.

SEA ORGAN
The sound of waves crashing against a shoreline is melodic in its own right, but ever wonder what the ocean would sound like if it could sing? Perhaps that is the question that architect Nikola Basic asked before designing a 230 ft (70 m) long Sea Organ (Morske Orgulje) on the shoreline of Zadar, Croatia. The organ, which was built in 2005, is composed of 35 tubes of various lengths, tilts, and diameters; each tube has a whistle opening. As water enters the tubes, air is forced through the whistle openings, producing a random harmonic melody. The organ is arranged in five-pipe sections, which are tuned to seven different cords. The song produced by the organ depends on the size and velocity of the waves that crash into the tubes, so it is constantly changing. Listen to one hypnotizing recording of the organ here: http://bit.ly/1MxmzW6.

Someone linked to me in a post with this tag set – and it’s beautiful because although I don’t remember the context for which I wrote it, I still found it to be quite resonate.
I hope I never stop feeling this way, in perpetual awe of our very selves.

To me, all creativity is magic. Ideas start out in the empty void of your head - and they end up as a material thing, like a book you can hold in your hand. That is the magical process. It’s an alchemical thing. Yes, we do get the gold out of it but that’s not the most important thing. It’s the work itself.

I mean, for me, the whole turning-point in my thinking about magic was when I realised that the only place this has to happen is inside your head. And that doesn’t mean it isn’t real. I think we have a problem in that we live in a materialist society – I don’t mean “everybody’s a bread-head, man”, I mean that we believe that the material world is the only one that’s important, the only one that exists. Despite the fact that believing that requires thinking, and science can’t actually explain how we think. It’s the ghost in the machine, forever outside the province of science. You can’t reproduce a thought in an empirical laboratory experiment, so you cannot properly talk about thought. Thought is a supernatural event which we all experience every minute of the day. The world of ideas is much more important than the material one. I mean, what’s more important, the reality of a chair or the idea of a chair? I’d say it looks like the physical world is actually predicated upon the intangible world of ideas and the mind. It looks like that’s the more important territory. Okay, so let’s treat it literally as a territory. There might be ways to explore it, ways since time immemorial that people have used to explore it. Drugs. Meditation. Some unpleasant ones like scourging and fasting, which never sound like much fun to me. Lots of ways that people have found over the years to get themselves deeper into this mental space.
