Rating Frenchie’s Food Refs in The Boys

Roast chicken with green beans and potatoes

While he holds Kimiko prisoner in what looks like an abandoned squat, Frenchie takes great pleasure in describing the dinner he has prepared for her. He presents her with a pan-roasted chicken, seasoned simply with olive oil, fresh herbs, and salt and pepper. It is served alongside green beans and roasted potatoes.

I love that Kimiko is literally chained to a radiator and Frenchie is treating it like a first date.

Also, I thought it was cute that he gave Kimiko plastic cutlery to be on the safe side. As if he hadn’t just watched her murder a bunch of dudes with her bare hands!

Madeleines

After she stops trying to kill him, Frenchie teaches Kimiko how to make Madeleines, buttery little cakes shaped like seashells.

Adorable. I love how quickly he flips from “I can’t trust you with metal utensils because you will murder me.” to this cozy scene.

I’ve heard that madeleines are the kind of sweet treat that French children are given after school for their goûter (basically, an afternoon snack). If that’s a nostalgic memory for Frenchie, it makes it even sweeter that he chose to bake these with Kimiko.

Also, madeleine pans are pretty much only good for one thing—making madeleines. So my question is…why does Frenchie have multiple pans stashed in the safe house?

Jambon Beurre and Diet Coke

After Butcher is reunited with Becca and introduces her to The Boys, Frenchie makes a jambon beurre for her. It’s a classic French sandwich—typically just good butter and ham on a crusty baguette. As he explains, it’s deceptively simple but the end result is so much greater than the sum of its parts.

The bow is so silly. It’s not load bearing at all and serves no function but to look cute for Becca. I think it’s kind of sweet. They even remember her favorite drink—Diet Coke.

It makes me wonder how often this came up. Did Butcher talk often about how much his late wife loved Diet Coke? Or had he mentioned it once and his friends squirreled away that tidbit?

Frenchie gets points for the thoughtful gesture. But with a sandwich with so few ingredients, every element needs to be perfect. I’m docking points because I’m not confident he has access to decent fresh baguettes in this dank basement in Queens.

Donut Hamburger

At Voughtland, Frenchie is appalled at this godless American delicacy.

However, later that day, he puts his disgust aside and volunteers to take Kimiko to eat as many donut hamburgers as her heart desires because he just wants her to be happy. Awww.

Sad Salad

Sad boring Colin texts his sad boring salad to Frenchie.

Colin was hot but he and Frenchie were doomed from the start. For the obvious reasons, of course, but also because the writers forgot to give him a personality.

What a boring thing to text? Also, it looks like Colin googled “salad” and sent Frenchie some stock art?

Cassoulet

Little Nina claims that Frenchie’s cassoulet is so good it made her come.

Probably a bit of hyperbole because cassoulet, while it is delicious, is also heavy AF. It typically has duck confit (duck slow-cooked in its own fat), pork sausage, more pork, and creamy white beans.

Up until this point, cooking for Frenchie was always an act of love. He associated it with good memories of his mother. It was one of the ways he showed he cared. And it’s telling that Little Nina would use something pure and twist it into something ugly. The whole point of her graphic comment is to shock and assert dominance.

Office Donut

Frenchie makes a mess eating a donut at the office.

After getting admonished by MM for not using a plate, Frenchie replies, “But I never use a plate when I eat your mother’s sweet and savory vagin.”

What a wild, completely nonsensical response. I love how quickly that escalated. Also, I think this is the first time we’ve seen Frenchie consume anything that was not drugs or alcohol. I’m with MM, though. Use a plate!

I always found this scene so cute. ☺️

Kimiko makes the totally relatable decision to bring a musical instrument to her fancy CIA job.

She decides to practice piano at her desk without headphones (and we know she owns them) so that all her coworkers can enjoy her creative journey.

No one seems surprised by this, like it’s a thing that happens all the time?

24 unanswered Frenchie and Kimiko questions

What would have happened if Little Nina hadn’t kidnapped Frenchie? We saw those secret smiles on Kimiko and Frenchie’s faces. I want to see the conversation that happened when he came back from his quiet freak out at the coffee machine.

Why did Frenchie leave after Kimiko kissed him? Was he overwhelmed? Scared? Did he not feel that way at the time?

How the hell did they get back to the office after escaping Nina? Frenchie was butt naked and in rough shape. Kimiko was in a hospital gown, covered in blood. Cherie was not much better. That must have been an interesting Uber ride.

What is Frenchie’s famous cassoulet recipe?

In season 1, they are running for their lives, hiding from Vought in this safe house. At what point was Frenchie like, “Ah yes, this is the perfect time to bake madeleines with this feral girl. Add eggs, flour, and butter to the supplies list.”?

In a bonus scene is Season 2, Frenchie tells Cherie that he would never sleep with Kimiko. Was he lying to her? Or lying to himself?

When exactly did Kimiko figure out what “mon coeur” means?

He still looks totally cute but I would like to understand the reasoning behind Frenchie’s very elaborate, kitten whisker-y facial hair in Season 4. Choices were made!

Speaking of, he spent a not insignificant amount of time in prison. Why does he look so hot and perfectly groomed? When Butcher sprang him from prison, did he let Frenchie stop by his apartment to do a line up before his reunion with Kimiko?

Are Frenchie and Kimiko roommates? If they are roommates I want a whole season of domestic scenes with these two.

Do they share clothes?

Does Cherie come over to hang out? I’ve always been curious about how Kimiko feels about her.

When they came to M.M.’s apartment after escaping Nina, did they stop by Costco to pick up a bottle of Kirkland Signature whiskey or did they already own it?

When exactly did they fall for each other? And when did they each come to the realization that they were in love with the other? I feel like we were a tiny bit cheated out of some scenes of unrequited sexual tension because Eric Kripke dragged his feet about these two getting together for too long. (And my theory is up until the beginning of this season, he only caved because the chemistry was undeniable and the fans wanted it.)

Did Kimiko really sleep with the Jitterbean barista or was she just overcompensating?

How does Frenchie know the signs for “penis” and “vagina?” I can’t see Kimiko needing to use those words with her brother. So did she and Frenchie create those signs together? And how did it come up in the first place???

Frenchie was totally in a throuple with Cherie and Jay, right?

Will Frenchie now act extra territorial around Kimiko when they get coffee? He doesn’t strike me as a jealous guy but I could see him making an exception for her.

Will Frenchie take Compound V?

After he sawed off Kimiko’s leg, did he spend the rest of the day carrying her around while she healed?

What happened to Frenchie’s mother? How did he escape his father?

Why does Frenchie know so much about bombs and bioweapons?

How did he end up moving to The States? How did he become friends with Cherie and Jay? I feel like I could watch multiple seasons of a Frenchie prequel.

How is Kimiko going to get out of prison? How will she rescue Frenchie? And how will he react when he finally hears her voice?

My Favorite Frenchie Looks

Completely subjective and in no particular order.

Bunny crop top? ✅ Knife harness? (Who is he stabbing???) ✅ Plaid pants and a little happy trail? ✅ I love that Frenchie is wanted by the FBI, holed up in a dank basement in Queens, and still has time to look hot and accessorize. This is also the first inkling we got that our boy has style.

I imagine Frenchie was on his way to bake madeleines with this girl he just met, looked in the mirror and thought, “Hmmm…this needs something…” And then he added a little bandanna because he wanted to look cute to impress Kimiko. The flour on the cheeks is a nice touch.

Bare ass naked, covered in blood, and rocking a bicycle lock statement necklace. Okay, technically he did not choose this ensemble but that doesn’t take away the fact that he looks amazing.

Cute and sassy and prepared to do 8 to 10 in a maximum security prison. I like that he has different colored hair in the flashbacks. It’s a nice character note that Frenchie has always been a bit of a peacock. Also, I think they should let Frenchie wear more jewelry.

This season 4 hair and the sunglasses 🥵🔥

It seems like the Season 4 wardrobe got an upgrade too, possibly courtesy of a fat CIA salary? They knew what they were doing with this slow pan up. The boots are sick, as are the bondage pants. But I love that he’s still wearing this old army jacket that’s barely held together with safety pins and patches. Frenchie is loyal. He loves things, even when they are falling apart.

I love this ugly sweater and the fact that he always customizes his clothes—chopping off the hems, sewing on patches, cutting bigger necklines. (My personal head canon is that after working for Little Nina, Frenchie can’t stand anything tight around his neck.) Frenchie may be a reformed assassin, but he still takes pleasure in beauty.

Finally, I love how as their relationship has evolved, Kimiko and Frenchie’s styles seem to have subtly influenced the other. There are the his and hers ripped jeans, military jackets, and matching combat boots. They just make sense together. 🥰

Frenchie and Kimiko casually sharing clothes. His sweatshirts are huge on her but she loves them. She finds it a tiny bit annoying that sometimes her clothes look even better on him.

M.M. teasing Frenchie for being a wife guy but not-so-secretly really happy for his friend

Only one episode at most where they are separated because a little yearning hurts so good
