          leilani’s chest heaved painfully through the cold, snowy atmosphere. the chill of the air around her caused a distinct burning to her lungs as she gasped for reprieve. god, did she miss the islands. her back makes contact with the wall behind her, and she runs her hands down her face in pure frustration between pants. she wasn’t sure how long this particular night of horrors had lasted, but joey was incredible at keeping the little lab rats running through the maze around ormond. spry, meticulous, damn near tireless---- all great qualities in a MURDERER. 

they were no closer to getting out of here than they were when this began. 

she couldn’t calm her heartbeat. it pounded terrifyingly hard, and she knew what that meant, she knew-- but she was so god damn tired. in pain. she just wanted this to be over. she takes a second to cover her ears and sigh, until she heard his fucking voice. 

     ----- kinda scandalous, middle of the trial and all. but i mean, if you’re into that, who am i to judge?

UGH.

the look she passes him was almost pathetic. she just wanted to rest but this asshole was on her heels. as always. she knew exactly what his perverted ass was referring to. if even with the piggish commentary, she watched the knife twirl around his finger. she knits her eyebrows and winces, a hand mindlessly going to cover her abdomen, where the knife had previous pierced her fresh many trials and counting. she was almost subconsciously preparing for the pain she’s no doubt going to endure. 

        “ fuck you. ” she spits. a choice of words, surely, but leilani hoped she had ditched him, but her hopes were quickly dashed, especially by his ever-cocky demeanor. frank was bad enough. joey? arguably worse. its not as if she was in any position to demand anything from him.

“ stay the fuck away from me, joey, i swear to god! ”

her pleading fell upon deafened, determined ears. dwight delicately rested leilani’s back against a wall. she sat up, whimpering and trying to stifle her cries ( unsuccessfully ). her fingers clasped at the opened, gushing wound on her side; trembling, in pain, scared. fear and panic struck her entire body as she watched dwight disappear from view. his heart was in the right place and his intentions were good! she knew as much, but .  . . as he rounded the corner to go search the nearby shack for a chest - hopefully find something to tend to her wounds - her heart rate sped up. the blood pouring from her wounds was the only warmth she currently felt, and even that was fleeting. she was becoming increasingly cold.

the blood loss clouded her judgement, impeded her decision making -- she didn’t want to be alone! through labored breathing and noises of pain, she’d force herself to her feet.  she barely could hold her own body weight up by the walls she was hidden behind, but the looming threat of a heartbeat pounding in her ears forced her to be on her way in dwight’s general direction. leilani released a harsh sob, overcome with helplessness. she was on the brink of death and leaving a generous bloodtrail right to her.

in due time, she reaches the killer’s shack. she makes her way down the stairs to the basement, halfway down the stairs she calls for him.

       “ dwight -- ! .  .  . dwight .  .  .! ”

it was two steps from bottom where carrying her own weight becomes far too much. she looses her footing and collapses to the ground with a harsh thud.  she felt the room spin around her, her life was quickly leaving her. it was such a familiar feeling now. she wishes she could find peace in it but found nothing but contempt: if only, would’ve, should’ve, could’ve done something better or different. she wasn’t certain how long she was on the ground for before his voice rang out, panicked, and very un-leader like.

    ----- “ i told you to stay put! ”

she tries to manage a defense of some sort, an apology, anything, but all that comes out are quiet, pathetic sobs and a sad smile. she heard him sharply exhale. leilani was lifted up off the ground and taken into the darkest corner of the basement. he does his best to sew her wounds, mend her, and helped her stand on her own two feet, but midway through this sorrowful attempt at making leilani even partially okay enough to keep going, the foreboding heartbeat assaulted their eardrums once again. 

his hands left her, and she watched him stand at attention, ready to protect her from the horrors that were coming down the stairs. determined, bullheaded, a leader. her leader.

          leilani’s eyes open, pressing her hands against her mattress and lifting her upper half off the bed in a fluid, jolting motion. she blinked, slowly, turning her head towards the door behind her to find her family bursting in carelessly, nosily, singing harmoniously, if also ever so slightly off-key. in her mother elisabetta’s hands, she spies a cake covered in those noisy plastic containers, most likely homemade at a very early hour this morning. a flower crown laid atop the cake’s plastic dome. it was fake, but very colorful. over her father anthony’s shoulders, a pair of bongos that he used to keep the rhythm of their little chorus. he plays with a great passion for a small occasion. it was a bit of a household tradition he had started. her brother keanu held an iced coffee in his hand, the free hand shoved into the pocket of his sweatpants. he looked exhausted, but not unhappy. 

even if she had yet to fully process the sudden happenings and remove sleep from her mind, she smiled, turning over and sitting up. she attempts waking up and encouraging blood circulation by stretching and rubbing away at her eyes; her hand lazily wiped the drool from the side of her mouth.

elisabetta set the cake down on leilani’s dresser, taking it upon herself to grasp her daughter’s hands and pull her to her feet. leilani stumbles a little, not yet awake enough to find decent footing but gains it quickly as elisabetta yanks her into her arms, embracing her with the warm aura only a mother could provide. leilani finds comfort in resting on her mother’s shoulder, eyes closed as they swayed from foot to foot, her mother leading. she felt the sudden chill of one of her mother’s warm hands leave her back momentarily and proceeded to have her head delicately lifted with one of her manicured fingers. elisabetta placed the aforementioned flower crown upon her leilani’s head. 

                     ---- “ i love you, vita mia. ”

she cups her daughter’s face in her hands and places a kiss upon her forehead, as her father and brother continued on. the bongo playing got more aggressive as the song reached its peak, and its conclusion.

leilani sits back on the edge of her bed. her father stood in front, her mother on her left side, her brother on her right. her passes over the iced coffee into leilani’s hands and she drinks greedily, desperate for the caffeine and to wet her dry throat. 

                    ---- “ happy birthday, leilei. you’re old now. ” her brother lightly joked.

after taking a few gulps, leilani smiles, resting on her brothers shoulder. anthony reaches out, ruffling an already wild hairstyle leilani sported from sleeping so heavily. 

                   ---- “ you’re growing up too fast. ” he tells her, placing a hand on his chest.

“ thank you. ” leilani responds, tears forming in her eyes as keanu wrapped an arm around her shoulder and squeezed her lightly. “ thank you all so much! ” 

                  ---- “ here. it isn’t much, but i, uh, got you something. ”                   ---- “ he saved up a long time for it. ”

keanu’s hands reach into his pocket and pull out a small, square box. he presents it to her, and upon her opening it she immediately scans it. they were gorgeous white, crystal, flower-shaped earrings. her eyes light up, no longer fighting the tears as they spill over onto her cheeks. turning them over in her hands, she squeezes them in her palm. she positions herself further in her brother’s arms. keanu rested his head atop hers, squeezing his little sister tightly. 

                  ---- “ you’re welcome. ” he says, through a chuckle. 

leilani passes the coffee into her brothers hands again momentarily as she rushes over to the mirror above her dresser, carelessly discarding the current earrings she wore in place of the ones her brother had gifted her. “ i am never taking these off. ” she proclaims with a bit of child-like stubbornness. she marveled in silence at the way they shined just off of the light coming in through her window. she twirls a few times, giddily, showing them off, her finger messing with it as she flicks it lightly. “ look how pretty they are, mama! ” elisabetta nods, smiling, a bit touched at the gift keanu had been protecting. 

                  ---- “ come on, leilei. there’s more. ” her father beckons, placing his hand over his daughter’s eyes as he goes to guide her.                    ---- “ keep ‘em closed, okay, lei? ” 

“ okay, daddy! ”

                  ---- “ ready? open your eyes on three, okay? ”

                  ---- “ one... two... 

T   H  R  E  E.

it comes out in echoes, remnants of her family’s voices. leilani’s emeralds shown from behind her eyelids, wide, and curious. fearful. and in a similar manner, she’d push her chest off of the ground. it was so quiet, and lonely; dark. it was raining. steadily, using a nearby tree as her leverage, she’d get to her feet and scan her surroundings. she occasionally blow out air from her mouth to scatter the rainwater away from her mouth. 

mother’s forest.

she takes quick care in removing her sweater and tying it around her waist. it would only weigh her down. time to get to work. a hand mindlessly moves to the side of her head, gently toying with her flower earrings. a chainsaw echoed threateningly from no specific direction. 

she hesitates, but presses on. quietly, and to herself, with no one around in sight to hear.
