Admittedly its been a rough week. The batch of cottontail kits I recently received were all very sickly and I lost so many little ones despite my efforts

Happy Māori new year friends!!

At least here, Matariki has risen and it’s the time of celebration for the Māori new year, and is the time for the traditional new year for many indigenous peoples across the pacific, from here in the south in Aotearoa me Te Wai Pounamu, to Fiji, to Hawai’i, and off the coast of Argentina!

It’s a time to set intentions for the new year and remember all those who have passed in the last year into Raroheka, guided and protected by the whetū Pōhutakawa. Times are tough as of late, but I’m hoping that everyone will pull through and share joy throughout the coming year regardless of hardship.

Okay but what if I drew them all. What if...

I've been wanting an excuse to gush about Pokémon for a while now, so I thought I'd give this a try. I also sort of want to start up a little... Review? Blog? Where I can talk about Pokémon designs and what not. For now I haven't started on that front, so here's just a drawing of Bulbasaur. And Pokémon cards ! (cards plural because I wanted it on a old, base set card initially but turns out the format is different so I had to crop it weirdly. It looks better on the modern card but. The crunchy old card is so cute <3)

I'll just say that Bulbasaur is, when all is said and done, THE pokémon. It's not my favourite. It's not even my favourite first partner pokémon. But it's the best designed of them all by far. He is the perfect blend of cuteness, weirdness, toughness, it's both a weird little monster and a fun critter that could be your friend. Incredible strong start !

Oh, also. I *hate* drawing this guy (and his evolution tbh) specifically because I think their designs are so nice - I can never get them to look quite right ! I feel like it's easy to slip to much into the "marketably cute" when drawing Bulbasaur. The way they draw him in modern Pokémon artwork and even his in-game "sprite" (eh) these days are just not as good as the weird eyes and anatomy of the OG artwork. Gotta keep it funky !
