Is It Better to Listen Through Headphones or Speaker?
Often we associate listening to music through headphones as a way of not subjecting the rest of society to whatever trash we like to call music or to drone out the noise of someones baby on a bus. Yet, I wonder are there perks to listening to music with headphones over the other?
Listening to music in public necessitates headphones, unless you want to be the most hated person on the subway. But it it necessary to listen to music at home with headphones?
An important difference between listen to music through simply a speaker is the channels of music you hear with each ear. Listening just through a stereo means your ears won't separately hear the left and right channels.
Evan Borras, a computer science student, told me that “My preferred way of listening to music is with my headphones on, the nicer the headphones are the better. But the difference between a better set and a cheaper set is not large. I am defiantly ok with cheaper headphones. I definitely do not prefer listening to music without headphones even if I am by myself.”

Evan’s often tangled headphones, a Christmas gift from a relative he could not remember.
The speakers do have some valid uses. They are great for listening to music with friends and giving yourself a feel of being at a concert. Whats frightening is that “most people listen 25%-50% louder on headphones than they otherwise would on speakers.” So maybe at home, give speakers a try.

Lord knows my busted up $9 headphones could use a rest!

Pancho and the Wizards was started in San Luis Obispo county by a gaggle of young musicians inspired by their love of wizardry and a named Pancho. Well, not really.
One of the members and creator, Tristan Cole Wildley discusses with me what has inspired his music from classic to modern rock bands such as Pink Floyd and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizards.
This interview is part of a two part series with the first part being a video, check it out.

History of Sampling Music and Kanye West’s Leaked Song “Slave Name”
Kanye West has not shied away from sampling music in his songs, such as the samples of “Bound” by The Ponderosa Twins Plus One and “Sweet Nothin’s” by Brenda Lee in “Bound 2.”
Recently a leak of Kanye West’s new song “Slave Name” featured a sampling of a song featured on this blogs weekly playlists, “Wally Wilder” by Delicate Steve.
Heres the leaked clip:
youtube
Mr. West is not inventing the wheel however. In the early 1980s the first rap music was created from the usage of sampling music placed underneath spoken word poetry.
While the birth of rap began in the 80s, music has always been referential, but Kanye has been bringing back old school sampling to modern day. I for one, couldn’t be happier.
The Verge provides a Kanye musical timeline of all the sampling done in his songs and even created a Spotify playlist with just the sampled songs. Check out the timeline for a complete rundown and direction of lyrics sampled backgrounds.

When you didn’t grow up with a record player, figuring out the little nobs, dials, and switches can be confusing. Not to mention the fact you have to manually place the needle on a certain location of the record! So much for a skip button.
But just because you did not grow up with one, does not mean you can’t learn to use it.
My family recently bought a record player, well technically, my sister bought it, but we like to share.
One of the first things my mother did when she saw the bright salmon colored music player was buy on Ebay a record. Not just any 70s album, no. Mom bought the Sonny and Cher Live in Las Vegas comedy and concert album. Yes, there are comedy recordings on vinyl.
Now every so often I hear Sonny’s outdated jokes coming from the living room, something my mother would have heard in her house at my age.
I made this video of my younger brother attempting to use a record player. He choose a record this is still popular today, “Rumors” by Fleetwood Mac, and skips past the Barry White albums.
He figured the mystery of the record player, but only after numerous efforts at button pressing.
Whether you want to get into the now trendy art of record playing, or not, hearing the music vinyl makes is a pretty unique experience.

Mini Playlist of the Week 5/28/19
It has been a hot second since I last uploaded, primarily because I have gone through stagnation in new music obtaining. I scoured the vastness of Spotify in hopes of finding music that appealed to me, but not until two days ago did I find enough new music to complete my list.
This weeks list features my crown jewel, Wally Wilder by Delicate Steve. The new Raconteurs album was also released recently, and I have inserted one of the more promising tracks. I also have a Hot Chip remix, who I have not listened to in perhaps five years or so. I was really into his quirky lil’ voice then.
1. Wally Wilder by Delicate Steve

2. Smoovie by Ronnie Hart

3. Help Me Stranger by The Raconteurs

4. Hungry Child by Hot Chip (Paul Woolford Sunrise Mix)

Mini Playlist of the Week 4/23/19
Yeasayer has just released a new album and my returning fear of new albums being bad is once again proved wrong. My mini-list will be featuring but one of the pretty good tracks from their newest album, “Fluttering in the Floodlights.” I still need to pop a Mystery Skulls track from the new album “Back to Life” that I am not over yet either.
Also features a combo track between Col3trane and French Kiwi Juice (FKJ) that is a bit more divergent to my usual taste, but I am still into it.
1. Memory Junkie by Club Kuru

2. Work by Foxygen

3. Perfect Timing by Col3trane and FKJ

4. Fluttering in the Floodlights by Yeasayer

5. What Love Is by Mystery Skulls

Mini Playlist of the Week: 4/15/19
This weeks playlist, in all honesty, features mainly the Mystery Skulls. But hey, they just released three new singles, obviously, that takes precedence over other songs for me at the moment. I did add “Look At What The Light Did Now” by Flo Morrissey and Matthew E. White, which is quite a bit tamer in comparison to the dance bops of the Mystery Skulls.
1. Back To Life by Mystery Skulls

2. Magic by Mystery Skulls ft. Nile Rodgers and Brandy
youtube
3. Stronger by Mystery Skulls

4. Don’t Fuck With My Money by Mystery Skulls

5. Look At What The Light Did Now by Flo Morrissey and Matthew E. White
