Max Verstappen has used the term, at Imola in 2020 against Lance Stroll, and not got as much flak for it as Yuki has from some quarters. Of course part of that is because the ableist insult is more recognised as such every year, so people become more critical of people who still use it. Sadly I think the other part about non-European drivers being given less flexibility (especially given that Yuki Tsunoda has a reputation for swearing already - I shudder to think what Tumblr would have made of Juan Pablo Montoya or Eddie Irvine…)

thanks for pointing this out! yeah people already have a history of having a double standard for yuki, this is just another instance of it. obviously what he said was wrong, but people are approaching this with ZERO nuance?

I’ve seen some seriously idiotic takes like:

- he’s an adult he should know better

being an adult and being aware of an ENGLISH slur has zero correlation. he didn’t learn English until after he was an adult, and he learned English via immersion around a specific group of English speakers that I would not be surprised if they were throwing around highly offensive language like that on the daily, and yuki picked up on it thinking it was normal everyday language.

- “if you don’t know a word don’t use it!”

use your head, he obviously thought he knew what it meant; he clearly thought it just meant “stupid/dumb”; dont tell me you’ve never used a word you’ve seen in passing, under the impression it meant one thing before realizing it meant something else, EVEN as a first-language English speaker. Like you don’t know what you don’t know.

And - “this is the bare minimum”

Like ok? What do you want him to do? Flagellate himself? Give up his job? Film himself getting on his knees and begging for forgiveness?? Like he learned what the word truly meant and apologized sincerely. what else is he supposed to do. Be so ffr rn.

Sorry im getting so heated thinking about this, as a 2nd gen Asian immigrant growing up around Asian ESLs, the amount of zero grace they’re given for not knowing perfect English is infuriating. A European speaking broken English with an accent is cute & sexy but an Asian person speaking broken English is ridiculed and ostracized. Just say you’re racist and go.
