Yes his parents are both German according to the official post made by original creator Wade Kastaway on deviant art! Which would make him 100% German but since he was born in Denver, Colorado he is technically American, and I have more to say on this

Personally I don’t see him speaking German or having a German accent. This is just my opinion as a someone who was a child of parents from a different country who moved to America before I was born. And due to the culture I was in, I knew a lot of other kids who were the same boat as me and none of us had our parent’s accents. So imma apply that logic to him as well. Especially with him going to public school for a period of time chances are he would have an Americanize accent that’s more related Colorado area.

Also chances are his abusive, grambling drunk father was not teaching him German. Nor was his abused stressed out mother. His parents most likely spoke both languages and English would end up becoming more common especially outside of the house.

His sister most likely only spoke English especially since she stayed in public school and had some friends up until her passing. She most likely had the most positive experiences with Toby this is supported by how he talks about her after her passing in his origin story.

Chances are as the parents are speaking both English and German (the latter mostly in the home) but the English will stick a lot more. Especially if the parents aren’t sitting down and teaching him German the same way English would be taught to him at school where he learned to talk definitely a lot more.

So if he did say anything in German it wouldn’t be with a German accent due to there is more american influence around him since his birth than German.

It’s very common for the mother tongue of the parents who moved to not be taught since English is the main language here. Unless the parents put emphasis on the child learning the mother tongue, which means telling them (insert word) means (this) like how people go dog and show a dog. Cause kids when they are first learning to speak don’t use context clues cause they aren’t at that stage yet. (Which I heavily doubt his mother did with either of her kids)

I think it would be difficult for Toby when he was a child to learn two languages. Especially via the parents yelling at each other (more so the father at the mother) or at Toby in German whilst English is being him being taught in school isn’t likely to happen.

It’s my personal opinion he wouldn’t have a German accent nor speak any German. He comes from German parents thus making him German but I feel like he would be so throughly Americanized with an accent related to the area he was born in. Like most people who have parents who moved to the states then having their child end up having
