HannibalCon @ Renaissance Hotel, London
Next on the schedule was the Q&A with Mads Mikkelsen and Katharine Isabelle, which was absolutely amazing. Mads has a wonderful insight into the show and the characters and has invested so much into his portrayal of Hannibal that it’s just a pleasure to listen to him talk about the dynamics and the creative process.
And whenever he mentioned anything Hannigram-related or replied to Hannigram questions (be it show or fanfiction), I squeed internally because he talks about the subject with great respect and absolute commitment and always seems most willing to feed the shippers’ imaginations. ;) Actually, this applies to Scott and Aaron as well, who pretty much ship themselves and don’t mind fans pointing it out!
I talked to other Fannibals after that panel and they told me of their experiences with other actors at other cons, cringing when shippy questions were being asked (or forbidding shippy questions in the first place) and thereby making the shippers feel utterly unwanted and unappreciated as fans, and I’m so grateful that is not the case with Hannibal. (A show about murder and cannibalism being a shining example to all other shows: go figure. XD)
Anyway, here are some of the less crappy photos I took during that panel:

Panel highlights:

I strongly suspect that if it had been Hugh Dancy at the panel and not Mads Mikkelsen, we would have been informed that it is, in fact, Mads who keeps linking Hugh to erotic Hannigram fics. XDDD

(Actually, the way Katharine described the shoot of the Alana/Margot sex scene was totally hot. Apparently they spent quite a lot of time shooting this scene and were so hungry afterwards that they didn’t even bother to get dressed before basically putting the hot dog vendor out of business. XD)

AND MADS DIDN’T EVEN KNOW THAT THE KISS HAD NOT MADE IT INTO THE FINAL CUT! *flails*

His exact words were “because of his taste in clothes, wine… and people”. XD

Actually, Mads even used the word “marriage” to describe their relationship.

I was literally talking about out this with a friend but can we please talk about how Merlin receives the consort treatment in the castle. Like Merlin has never been treated like just a manservant.
LIKE the scene with where Leon walks in on them look for a ghost and Merlin goes with “I’m teaching him poetry” bro no one believes that. THE DELETED SCENE where Arthur gives Merlin his mother’s sigil.
But specifically does Arthur realize how this is come into play diplomaticly?? Like kings and queens wouldn’t bother going through Gwen if she doesn’t seem like she has the kings favour. Like they would play nice becuase she’s the queen but it looks like she doesn’t have as much sway over Arthur. They would go through Merlin because he does. Does Arthur realize how he’s inadvertently oppressing the amount of power that Gwen is supposed to have. I know Merlin would not realize what’s going on, Arthur certainly wouldn’t. Does Leon know?? DOES GWEN???
Oh god it gets worse the more I think about it. Its gets worse when you think about how close Merlin would be perceived to be to the round table knights of Camelot.

Not shaving and not wearing make up are literally nonbehaviors. They’re a complete lack of action. But doing nothing is considered masculine because women are not allowed to just be. this goes double for trans women.

Oh how I love you modern Merlin as a medieval history professor. I can just imagine his students talking about him. "His lectures are great, he talks about it like he was actually there."
"Do NOT bring up Arthuriana he WILL go on an hour long rant and you WILL miss your last train home."
"He has this weird academic beef with Geoffrey Chaucer?!"
"His office reeks of herbs, lord knows what he puts in his morning tea."
"Dude's been teaching here for like 30 years and he still somehow looks 22."
"I swear to you, I saw his eyes turn gold one time during a lecture."

in the latest cyber-news: the internet archive has lost their case against 4 major publishing houses (verge article). they’re going to appeal, but this is still a bad outcome. the fate of the internet is currently hanging in the balance because 4 multibillionare publishing groups missed out on like $15 of combined revenue during the pandemic because of the archive’s online library service. it’s so fucking stupid.
for those who don’t know what the internet archive is, it’s a virtual library full of media. books, magazines, recordings, visuals, flash games, websites - a lot of these things either don’t exist anymore or cannot be found & bought. heard of the wayback machine? that’s part of the internet archive. it is the most important website to exist, and i don’t say that lightly. if the internet archive goes down, the cultural loss will be immeasurable.
so how can you help?
boycott the publishing companies involved in this. they’re absolute ghouls, frankly, and don’t deserve a penny. the companies involved are harpercollins (imprints), wiley (imprints), penguin random house llc (imprints), and hachette book group (imprints). make sure the websites are set to your location as it may differ worldwide.
learn to torrent. download a torrent client (i recommend transmission), a vpn (i recommend protonvpn - sign up and choose the area that’s closest to your continent/country), and hit up /r/piracy on reddit for websites. with torrenting, you can get (almost) any media you want for free in high quality, with add-ons such as subtitles, and with no risks of loss. i would also recommend getting into the habit of watching stuff online for free. the less you can pay to a giant corporation, the better.
get into the habit of downloading and archiving materials. find a TB external hard drive, ideally the higher the better. it’ll probably cost around $60 for 1TB and continue to go up, but they’re so so useful. if you can’t afford a drive, look for any GB harddrives or memory sticks you have lying around and just fill them up. videos, pdfs, magazines, songs, movies, games - anything you can rip and download and fit on there, do it, because nothing is permanent.
donate to the internet archive. this is the most important option on the list. the IA relies entirely on funding, and it’s going to need more to fight this case. whatever you can donate, do it. i promise it’s helpful.
and finally…

there is so much about modern queer discourse that could be fixed simply by understanding "straightness" to be a socio-political classification & reward for conformity rather than just a personal identity.

When I was twenty I was almost shot by a police officer because of my mental illness. I was peeling bark off a tree on public property to calm my anxiety.
Two officers pulled up very quietly in a squad car while I had my back turned. They did not announce their arrival. When I noticed them approaching me by the sound of their footsteps, I was frightened and reached for my phone to record them. They thought I was going for a weapon and one reached for his pistol. I put my hands up.
They illegally detained me and took my ID to run a background check. The one who had started to draw his gun on me asked me if I’d had any thoughts of hurting myself or others.
My background check came up clean. They released me and told me I wasn’t doing anything illegal. I went to my car and bawled my eyes out, thinking about how I’d almost died for the crime of “weird behavior.”
Don’t give these pigs a registry of the mentally ill. They’re already trying to kill us for no good reason.
