Hello. This post is being written by a friend of Sarah’s at her twin’s request. I have been asked to disclose the following. 

1. Sarah unfortunately killed herself on Monday, January 4 in the late evening.

2. Jasper is okay and her aunt is taking ownership of him.

3. Her family does not need any help notifying anyone, accessing her stuff, etc. They’ve got all that taken care of.

4. I ( @queerenbian ) with her twin’s permission have started a Discord server for friend’s of Sarah’s. Here is the link.

5. Her twiin does not wish to be involved in anything surrounding her death. This includes the desire not to be messaged on Reddit regarding Sarah’s death.

I will not be accessing this account again so please forward all questions to myself, @queerenbian. I am more than happy to answer them.

This is a scheduled post, so if you're reading this I'm probably not around anymore. There were some queued and scheduled posts before this one so that I didn't conspicuously disappear for a few days. Thank you for all the interactions and friendships over the years. I appreciated seeing all of you in my notes even if we didn't interact, and I was glad to be able to see the progress of so many mutuals over so many years as we all grew up together in a way.

To those I was close to who I'm not able to say goodbye to individually I'm sorry and thank you for being part of my life.

It is largely an issue that affects the gay male community. This is largely a systemic issue that should be addressed, and it is wrong that people are dying and certain groups are disproportionately affected.

The reason the deferral used to be a lifetime deferral is because the tests are imperfect and it wasn't worth risking it. The deferral is now shorter because among other things testing has vastly improved and they can now be more confident that HIV would be caught by their testing, however very early on in infection (as in within the first few months) testing will often miss it. People who are receiving blood are often receiving tens of units and some people need hundreds or thousands over a lifetime and they need to be sure that there is an almost zero chance that any of those bags will have any transmissible disease.

There are lots of issues with homophobia. I am absolutely not denying that. But this is one of the instances where there's actually some real justification for at least that part, whether or not you think the women who have sex with MSM is taking it too far.

Think about the statistics. Men who have sex with men are a fairly small percentage of the population yet they make up well over half of new cases. That means the risk for an individual is way higher if they are MSM.

Blood donation restrictions in the U.S. have been relaxed since the pandemic. You may be eligible to donate even if you previously had a temporary or lifetime deferral.

Blood supplies are really low almost everywhere. They aren't able to hold as many blood drives. It will probably be getting even worse as more people are getting sick again.

A lot of waiting periods were reduced from 12 months to 3 months, and some lifetime deferrals were reduced to 3 months or removed.

I don't think they changed any of the health criteria (weight, blood pressure, hgb, etc.) but if you have previously received a deferral for a disease risk related reason there's a good chance you wouldn't be deferred under the new rules

Bonus: they're testing all blood donations for COVID antibodies (for convalescent plasma reasons), so you'll get a free antibody test
