tbh i dislike the "small dog owners never train their dogs. unlike big dog owners who ALWAYS train their dogs" thing because well. that's not true.

I think rough collie ruffs kinda look like a heart if you squint and that's pretty cute. Our boy (as in myself and @fullyfunctionalminiaturebeehive) William up top, he's an atypical merle and just coming up on a year.
For some variety - Pal, the original Lassie actor below, followed by Oscen, Kepler, and Stellina. @oscenfortrouble and @kangals I hope you don't mind that I borrowed your dogs...
William photos below cut:

He's a good boy.
#WAIT. HI. THIS IS SO CUTE?????#showing everyone and also oscen immediately#I love how you captured the differences between the two tris!#it's really fun to see the distinct differences between two very similar dogs highlighted so well#and please tell William a happy almost-birthday for me! he's very handsome!!#Oscen#Other Collies#Art

You know how wild animal species have a conservation status? Have you heard of something similar for dog breeds? Or is dogbreeding as a professional and amateur practice just too varied to make informed judgements of a breed's health? I ask because I've heard about collies having overbred issues for a while, and I have no clue if that's getting better or worse from one decade to another.
With collies specifically: I know that the breed has a fairly high COI + yet is considered to be much healthier than several breeds with similar COIs. The Collie Health Foundation is a good resource for specifics about health issues found in the breed.
In order to look for specific trends in health issues, I think you're looking for OFA (and specifically the CHIC program). Obviously it's missing some of the historic data, but here's the testing statistics for all CHIC-registered collies, broken down by birth year!
#I'll be the first to admit that I'm not that involved with purebred communities - if there's something more specific than this I'm not aware#but hopefully this answers at least some of your question?#and if anyone else here knows about something that I'm missing I'd love to hear about it!#asks

Today I said goodbye to Minion, after a sudden and sharp decline in her quality of life. On the 22nd we would have been together for 15 years--more than half of my life and almost all of hers. None of what I can think of to say would be sufficient, except that she was my best friend. I am incomplete without her.
Thank you for loving her with me all these years. It means the world to me if she has ever brought you even a little bit of joy 💛

The Devil's Minion, Summer 2009-May 13th, 2025
#I catsat once + every time I came by to check on her she would throw herself back and forth across my legs while I sat on the couch#yelling the entire time#rest easy baby girl you will be dearly missed <3#minion

I absolutely agree that body structure plays a part in it!
The dogs I lived with previous to these guys were both lab-pit mixes and also hated it, so I wonder if there's multiple different elements going on? but also that's a sample size of four, and could mean nothing
Re: oscen not liking to roll over.
My border collie rolled over a single digit number of times in 12 years, and I can't even be sure that it happened during professional training [she was deaf, so gestures for return were very important]
Fjara now also refuses to offer it, and I'm becoming increasingly convinced that it's a fake trick made up by dog media
#I do not have the following to run a dogblr-wide poll about what breed of dog you have and if they know roll over#but I'm tempted#asks

#overexaggerating obviously but I do think there's something interesting about how it's one of the most common dog tricks#everyone is like ooooh top five tricks to teach your dog and one of them is without fail: roll over#meanwhile every single dog I've lived with flat-out refuses to learn it#I'd say the others are sit stay down and shake#in terms of what's commonly perceived as like. tricks that someone who's doing nothing else with their dog will teach#and most of those are functional instead of actual tricks#asks
