Final Penguin Book Cover Design
Tumblr media
This cover features an image of a pig skull. This suggests the idea of mortality and the idea that unchecked power leads inevitably to violence and death.

Connecting with others
Tumblr media
The “Local” page shows a collection of new or featured trails in the area. The “Following” page features trails specifically by followed users to create a more personalised, filter search. The “My Trails” page is a log of trails a user has recorded. It includes the name, location, category, distance, elevation and approximate ride time. The “Leaderboard” page shows the users ranking in relation to other people. It features the top riders of the week. Getting a top rank on the leaderboard will give the user a “Star Rider” status.

Personalised Experience
Tumblr media
When first logging into the app and creating an account, the app asks a few guided questions to help adjust the explore screen based on the user’s preferences. Featured questions would be asking the user’s level and type of rider they are. There is also a competitive feature that can be added to their profile so that they could “race” against their friends to reach higher achievement levels.

Badge Icons
Tumblr media
These are designs of various badges that can be earned while using the app. The design maintains the brand colour palette. The intention of their use is to gamify the experience of using this app for mountain biking. There is an incentive for recording and sharing trails. The more a user does, the more experience points, or ‘XP’ they gain. They can earn new badges that are associated with different achievements and feature it on their profile. It is a fun way to create personal motivation or share their progress with friends. These badges will appear on the user’s profile page.
The Trailblazer badge is an early achievement for recording and sharing a first trail. This is intended to get users excited and hyped during their early use of the app.
Next is the Explorer badge for users that discover and ride 10 new trails. The Trail Guru badge is for those who recorded and shared 15 trails. Lastly, the Superstar badge is for those who received 10 or more positive ratings on a trail the user shared. Over time, the number of badges one can earn will expand as the user levels up.

Explore Page Sketch
Tumblr media
I further considered what the main interface would require. Since the social aspect is a major factor of this app, I wanted the home page to feel almost like a personalised explorer trail that encompasses trails near the user, recommendations, and various popular categories. For example, in this sketch, “Trails with a View” is featured. There is also a search feature so that users can easily look up specific types of trails in various areas. Additionally, there are search filters to find trails by location, type and rating.
For new users, there is a pop up tutorial to help them learn how to navigate this app. It is intended to be a quick guide to help them get started.
Tumblr media
The bottom icons feature an icon for the explore page, community page, favourite trails, and profile page. These icons help personalise the experience for users. It is also intended to be an easy way for users to quickly navigate their way around the app with minimal searching and clicking.
The explore page is where users can discover new trails. Featured trails, high rated trails, and hidden gems can be found on this page. The community page allows users to see what trails other riders have shared. It is also a place for users to share their own trails that they have recorded. It is also a way for users to interact with one another and share their findings, or provide insight on the trails. The favourite trail page is a collection of trails the user liked. It is an easy way to quickly access those specific trails. Lastly, the profile page lets users see their personal goals, achievements, awards, as well as edit their profile details.

Developing a user friendly design
To ensure that this app suits the needs of riders, I immersed myself in the shoes of a potential user. I explored various trails around the DC, Maryland, Virginia areas. Conducting this research had me considering what types of features would be useful to have on the app, how I could design levels, and what terrain key terms I should consider for the search filters.

Initial Sketches
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The goal was to create an app that was visually interesting, user friendly and functional. I began by considering the trail recording and search components of the map. I created flowcharts to illustrate how each screen would lead to another. As I created my screens, I thought about what components would be needed.

Ad Campaign Development
Tumblr media
For an ad campaign for my app I came up with multiple different ideas.
Top/Left: A mountain biking trail printed on a set of stairs, maybe at a train/tube station, that could lead to something else like a large banner or something else.
Bottom/Left: A TikTok/Social Media challenge trend that involves using the app. Encouraging users to share photos or videos of their favorite trails using a specific hashtag. Bottom/Right: Bike chain link shaped business card that could also be used in the social media campaign.
Top/Right: A large screen set up somewhere such as a town square. With a stationary bike bolted to the ground. People can sit on the bike and get an immersive experience watching a first person view of a mountain biker riding through a trail. On the right side showcasing the types of data and info you can record and save in the app.

Logo Development
Alongside deciding on a brand name, I sketched out ideas of how the logo could look. In my initial stages, I started with forest and trail motifs. I also played around with the lettering “TB” when I was thinking of calling it “Trail Buddy”. I also tried different variations for “Trail Scout”, making an ‘S’ shape with a trail, using bike gears and components.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once committing to the idea of “Trail Link”, I experimented with various variations of the letters “TL”. I wanted to incorporate a motif of bike chain links somehow. I considered making it into the shape of the ‘T’ and ‘L’
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The above image shows my process on how I experimented with the lettering to create links that fit the silhouette. I also tried out different variations of typefaces to see what would work with the symbol. As there was a slant to the links, I wanted the text to be italicised and work harmoniously with the imagery. I also wanted the shape of the text to fit the shape of the links I created. I needed something that had some level of straight edges, slants, but also a little bit of roundedness for some letters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided on using the typeface, Univia Pro Ultra Italic. I then experimented with various colour variations. The idea was to have the design feel eye-catching, exciting, and vibrant. These are select variations I have experimented with. The last one, being my favourite, felt the best fitting for this project. However, the symbol did not fit exactly how I envisioned it. The more I looked at it, the more it resembled a metro map. While I was experimenting with trail and map motifs, I did not want it to resemble it in that way. I modified the design to better represent bike links. My design is intended to encompass the silhouette of ‘T’ and ‘L’, illustrate a mountain bike motif, and serve as an analogy to linking on social media.

Brand Name Generation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When conceptualising my brand, I brainstormed various names, thinking of a good brand name. I deviated in different directions, thinking of animals that could be associated with the concept of relevant terms. As I brainstormed, I decided that a name that has some clarity of what it could be related to is important.
I brainstormed more variations using the words “trail”, “mountain”, “path”, etc. As the app is intended to also be a social media app, I wanted a name that could allude to that. “Traillink” felt like the perfect name. I liked how it sounded and the motifs I could use with that brand name.

Branding Research - Mountain Bike Atlantic
BRANDING & IDENTITY
Tumblr media
The design team's aim was to create an energetic and approachable image that reflects the region beyond the traditional motifs of lobsters and lighthouses. The brand's art direction utilized bold colors that contrast with each other, which gave it a retro vibe and helps it stand out. The color palette was incorporated into the brand's photography and campaign imagery. The assets used for the brand, which included a mixture of photography and folk art, aimed to create a sense of playfulness that was characteristic of the warm and hospitable culture in the East Coast region.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The website and social media platforms served as the primary sources of inspiration for potential riders of the brand. They aimed to capture quality assets of every network possible to showcase the variety of terrain, features, and accessibility available to anyone with a bike. The brand covered 16 networks before the fall summit by hitting the road, shooting photos and videos, and capturing GoPro footage and stills. They worked closely with locals, who helped them navigate through their home networks, which contributed to the creation of video loops, highlight reels, and galleries, setting the stage for an online experience that showcases the brand's offerings.
