So there's a post going around complaining about American Imperialism and Pride, blaming queer Americans for other countries doing Pride stuff in June.
And I've chosen not to reblog it for a lot of reasons.
First off, it's blaming American Queer people for making Pride "international." This ignores the history of the movement. The whole reason it's called "Pride" comes from the people who were celebrating the anniversary of Stonewall. The reason this term (and the June date in some places) was adopted in other cities in the US, let alone countries, was as a show of solidarity as a movement. This was a choice made by marginalized people in those other places, and not an act of "imperialism." While this was starting, we were fighting to have any kind of "Pride" events in the US to begin with.
The OP says that they're in aotearoa, and claims their pride should be in July, not June, because they earned their rights. They acknowledge that the official pride months in New Zealand (which differ by state) are in February and March -- but it misses the god damn point.
Pride isn't about having won anything. No one won any rights at Stonewall, nor was any historic legislation passed that day.
It was a god damned riot.
Pride is about the fight. It's about the day we decided to fight back.
Pride is about celebrating our ability to fight for our own existence.
If you don't want to celebrate it in June? Fine. I genuinely don't care when you choose to celebrate the fight -- I just care that you're fighting and I'm happy to stand alongside you. If you think people need to learn more about queer history in your country too? Awesome. I'd love to learn it. Share some resources or try teaching us.
But this weird attitude that it's somehow American Queer people's fault that your own community decided to adopt the anniversary of a riot in the US is just insane to me. They chose it to show solidarity, because when we fight for us, we're fighting for you too and vice versa. Especially in a year when American Queer people are fighting for their lives more than they've had to for a long time with the attacks on the Trans community, it feels pretty fucked up to equate those getting stepped on by the boot with the boot itself.
And maybe that poster is just young and hasn't thought about it. Maybe they're just frustrated that their nation's own queer history isn't more widely known. But this is also the exact kind of thing that gets fed into communities like this one in an attempt to divide it.
Don't fucking fall for it.

jonah magnus is just. what a guy. he somehow figured how to transfer himself into different bodies using eyes. he's a horrible bastard. he's hot. he's the essence of being pinned down by a searching gaze and found wanting. he's fascinated by human behavior despite having 200 years to watch everyone around him. he murdered a guy with a steel pipe that one time. he started the apocalypse. he became a conduit for an eldritch god. i want to see him in a corner and weakened just to watch him squirm. i want to watch him put someone else in a corner and watch them squirm. he desperately needs to control the narrative and it's never shown Why. he let his archivist be kidnapped and forcibly moisturized (and isn't That a sentence) for a month, just to make sure the Stranger's mark stuck. he's ruthless and practical and clever. he interacts with the world like it's four different chess games stitched together, and he's winning all of them at once. i want to see him grab someone jon by the face and talk in a very quiet threatening certain tone. i want to see him in his element. i want to see him out of his element. he's terrifyingly confident. he's the Ceaseless Watcher's creature and he's been of it for two hundred years. he's Such a guy and i have so many thoughts about him and now they're your problem too
And even further: He's an old man. He's a funny bitch. He's dramatic. He's shockingly subdued. He loves scheduling. He condemned the entire world to something worse than death because he feared someone would do it to him first. He's horny about being compelled. He likes cake. He compared Jon's wounds to swiss cheese. He makes puns. He wrote a ritual in iambic meter. Nobody finds out why he's like that. When Tim was going through his crisis Elias just told him to paperwork the sorrows away. He has so much repressed anger and yet he's so civil. He views the world as a zero-sum game. He won. He lost. I want him to thrive. I want him to lose everything he has in his pursuit and not realise it until it is too late. He's genre-aware. I want the narrative to love him as much as I do. He never used his powers on Gertrude and this was mutual. He killed her with a gun and said she died in the line of duty. Either he lied about watching Melanie's channel or he just browses paranormal YouTube for fun. He was the only one who figured out how the rituals worked. He had enough architectural expertise to modify Robert Smirke's blueprints to make them evil. He had a harem. He's even sexy.

The tiktokers calling James Barry a woman are of the same ilk that tried "reclaiming" Alan Hart as a lesbian in the 80s while telling his wife she was in denial when she told them to stop. These are people who will piss on the graves of dead trans men to feed their own narrative while telling their loved ones to kick rocks and I think we should start treating that as the act of violence it is and not a misconception. They know. They don't fucking care.

Putting aside the reasons why James Barry's trans identity is erased, the thing that sickens me the most is the fact that "empowering cis woman" is something people will celebrate more than an empowering trans man. Like, it feels like the attitude is "oh, he was a trans man and not actually a woman? lame :/" we can't even be happy and celebrate the accomplishments of a trans man. A trans man's accomplishments aren't even to be celebrated.
A trans man's accomplishments aren't even celebrated the ways a cis woman's accomplishments are and there is something so, so, so vile about that.

It's so depressing watching Disney, in its desperate attempt to stay relevant and maintain its IP, cannibalise itself into irrelevance. For a company that used to be so well known for producing high quality and enjoyable (by all ages) animated films, with either original premises or original takes on classical stories, their quality of content has rapidly decreased as their corporate greed has become more blatantly apparent in recent years.
All that is to say, as nostalgic as I am towards Disney and despite the love I still carry towards many of their films, we have got to stop letting that nostalgia for what their brand used to be blind us from how much of a soulless (and sometimes even offensive) cash grab their live action remakes and unnecessary sequels are.
It's okay (and even a good thing!) to want better quality in your films. Just because they're known for making animated/family films, doesn't mean that they should be free of criticism — if anything that makes it even more important.
They've managed to stay relevant for 100 years, but if they don't change their business strategy I wouldn't be suprised if they stopped producing original animated films.
Obligatory request to anyone reading this to please avoid going to see the Lilo and Stitch live action remake. Not only is it another example of the above, but it's a particular offensive remake that strips away all of the original films themes about overtourism in Hawaii and changed the films ending to reinforce white supremacist ideology by promoting the idea that in order to have a good education (in marine biology of all things – as if Hawaii isn't known for that) Nani has to go to the mainland. If you're that curious about the film, or want to hate watch it that bad, pirate it.

The reason Trans people, especially trans men, seem to be flocking to the character of Elias Buchard is DEFINITELY NOT because it would be incredibly convenient to place your Eyes in a cis guy's skull and take his body. Ha. Haha.

"If you hate Chappell Roan then you're a misogynist and just hate women!" No, I love women. I highly dislike transandrophobes. There's a difference.

What’s really disappointing about Jessie Gender’s descent into radfem ideology is that her video on the racist roots of TERF ideology was an important video on introducing the inherent white supremacist ideas that TERF ideology upholds.
Jessie knows that radfem ideology is an inherently racist brand of feminism, and yet she still believes that trans people are able to “reclaim” it by slapping on an inclusive label, even if that so-called inclusivity still excludes trans men.
As a trans guy who used to watch her, I’m disappointed. But I’m more scared about the influence she has and the harm she may cause towards trans men/mascs and trans men/mascs of colour specifically if this ideology breaks containment via her channel.

The Jessie Gender/Trans Rad Fem discourse has really infuriated me honestly.
Like, she platformed someone who specifically spoke about transmasc issues who is NOT transmasc, and transmascs have taken issue with that fact. Then when there's obvious pushback against the ideas Talia brings up (because she's not transmasc), it's apparently a "targeted attack".
How about maybe just listen to trans men and transmascs when they talk about their experiences instead of writing them off as people who think systemic misandry exists (not what we are saying).

I think smthn that frustrates me about chappel roan is that she was like "I don't think men make good art" but like all her looks etc are clearly inspired by drag queens. Honey most of those are cis men. Like clearly you think at least some men make good enough art for you to try and emulate it.
