“Well great, ‘Cuz i figure if you said something you’d probably have to keep yourself out here for a while.” Nate hauled himself up after, well, Nate and kept his head down enough to not catch a glimpse of anything. “I dunno what you were doing out here but whatever it was I’m sure you don’t want anyone back home catching wind of.”

17. out in the cold without warm clothes
He hates this. He hates this. Stuck in the frozen New York air, completely nude and absolutely hating it. He wraps an arm around himself, well aware that there’s nothing protecting his dignity save for the tin cover to a rusty old trash can right now.
Of all of the places to lose his powers (and his clothes)–he had to do it in the Big Apple.
Tumblr media
Just his luck.
His teeth are chattering as he’s tucked into an alleyway, and he’s seriously debating how to proceed so he doesn’t die or get frostbite and lose all his toes–when someone else enters his alley.
“Hey, uh–mind lendin’ fella a pair o’ pants?”

Nate shielded his eyes slightly and clambered up the fire escape behind him. “So, Tell nobody you saw me here and I’ll do the same.”

Nate patiently waited for the other to climb up the fire escape. He motioned. “Fourth window. I’m gonna come up behind you so hide anything you don’t want seen and I won’t look at anything else,”

Nate laughed as well with a small snort. “Thank ya kindly but I don’t need any of that to aid my cause. I do plenty well on my own.”
@polyesterpeacock
[You turn to Nate.]
“Oh, uh..you’re an artist, right? Y’do art? It’s neat. Never got the hang of that myself, not really what’cha’d call an ‘artsy’ person, I guess.”
[You head on back to the couch and sit down again, clasping your hands in your lap as if to physically restrain yourself from touching any more of your friend’s things.]
“….what kinda things do ya paint? You make a livin’ offa that or is it just a hobby?”
Nate nodded slowly. He stubbed out his cigarette in his ashtray and blew the smoke out through his pursed lips. He hummed once he let the smoke out before nodding.
“Yes…I like art. I paint uh-Just whatever comes to me, what I got muse fore. Sometimes I make money sometimes I don’t.”

Nate stared. “...Here uh-Fire escape?” He offered quietly. “You won’t have to worry about people staring but you gotta move fast. I’m on the fourth floor so climb fast but-”
Nate gave a sheepish smile, still grimacing.

Nate politely turned his head and offered his jacket. Beneath he had a tight sleeveless shirt. He did not shiver, in fact he rarely did, an stoically offered the article. “Sure, No problem.”

Nathaniel was walking into the alleyway, not for purposes that most would consider to be proper or good. But regardless, He was doing it. And he was...Surprised to say the least at what he found. There was a naked man, which he supposed wasn’t actually that strange for the idea for New York.
But, the man actually speaking and saying what he did now that was weird. Nate stared for a long moment. “...I don’t think I can do that.”

Nate’s cigarette was now dead and he was itching to move about, tugging at the loose thread on his jeans. He shrugged.
“Why-I s’posse people find me desirable, I would think so.” He murmured, mostly to himself rather than to the other man.

Nate leaned back and lit a cigarette, taking a drag from it. He gazed over Larry, curious as he watched the man stroll about. He felt uncomfortable at the idea of someone touching his things but would rather not say anything. So, he watched as his things were touched and leafed through and toyed with.
The longer he watched the strange interaction the more calm he was. He hummed and continued to smoke his cigarette. He reveled in the taste of it, the feeling. He hated the way he got hung up in the smoking, the way it was a feeling that sent him reeling. The feeling he got when smoking was one that he had yet to rival. He seemed to get lost in it,forgetting what was happening around him.
“...Huh? What uh-What’s that?”
@polyesterpeacock
[You look around his apartment, impressed.]
“Nice place, Nate, really dig it! Real bachelor’s pad, yeah.”
[You make yourself at home, plopping yourself down on the couch. You shake off the dizziness that comes with such a swift movement and rest your arm over the back of the couch. You fell silent then, tapping the fabric and glancing over at Nate. Your social skills never were fantastic beyond flirting and schmoozing, so you were somewhat at a loss for words.]
Nate’s apartment was much like a polished piece of glass. It shone bright, but underneath it was worth little. The apartment was clean, but closer inspection would reveal chipping paint, bowing wood splints in the walls. The paint that was left was yellowed, although you could hardly tell it was white.
Nate had a modest television, a small setup for his art. Undoubtedly the crowning jewel of the small space was his bookshelves. He had books on everything, law and art and science and pop culture. Nate had a small nook set up against the furthest wall to read the books.
Nate took a seat beside Larry and reached into the coffee table’s drawer. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes and looked over. “Are you uh-Are you adverse to smoke?”

Nate was walking slow, nearly ambling. He was trying his best to keep his balance and clear his mind. It was calm, quiet outside. He kept his eyes lifted for a minute as he walked. “Yeah jus’ guys being dudes being buds being-”
After that he walked in a relative silence, only for a few moments before reaching his apartment building. Nate let himself inside and led Larry in behind. “C’mon in buddy-”
@polyesterpeacock
[You think for a moment. That didn’t sound like a bad idea to you.]
“Sure, why not! I, ah, don’t smoke, though, but we could do other stuff!!”
[What, you didn’t know, you weren’t exactly experienced in the “friends” department. Unless you counted folks drifting to and from your casino as “friends”, which you didn’t, but wished you did. You smile brightly.]
“Lead the way, pally!”
Nate beamed and stood to his feet. He wavered slightly on them, though he hastily offered the bartender money. He settled his debts before ambling to the door.
“Come on then, I think I’m gonna like you, ya got-Spunk, pep.”

Nate snorted. “Yeah yeah, It’s certainly...Titillating. Meet lots of folks, all of em.” He watched amused as Larry seemed to be arguing with himself.
“Hey, I’m not interested. No need to get your briefs in a tangle.We’re chatting, we’re havin’ fun. Wanna come back to my place for a-Smoke? I think I can make it without too much effort.” Nate offered a somewhat coquettish smile. He wasn’t actively trying to flirt but, he was becoming more playful as the booze he had been drinking for hours was setting in.
@polyesterpeacock
[You smile back, feeling a little less uneasy. You enjoyed this Nate fellow, especially as he drank more and more. You let out a laugh in response to his. It had been a while since you clicked so easily with another person. Maybe this could lead to something. Friendship, that is. You didn’t have much of that.]
“Poker, huh? I see where you’re comin’ from, pal. I like it. Snappy analogy. I should use that sometime.”
[You rest your elbow on the table, plopping your cheek in your hand.]
“So, what’s your deal, man? Whadda you do, huh? Me, I own a casino. Well..i’m more the face’ve it, really. The guys in suits do all the business stuff. I just walk around the place and crack some jokes in the comedy club. Swanky job if y’ask me. Half’a the time I don’t even have to be there and people’ll know me, what with the place havin’ my gorgeous mug plastered on everything. Branding, y’know? People dig it. I’m my own mascot. Crazy, right? I know.”
Nate gave a toothy smile. He tried to decipher what Larry was saying, partially getting the words and missing some of them. He kept his glazed eyes on Larry with a quiet hum. Nate motioned the other man closer.
“Lemme tell you-Lemme tell you what I do…What I do-Well y’see what I am-What I am…Well, I’m a working man ya catch my drift? I’m a chippy a-A worker of the oldest profession.”
Well, as things seemed to go, the more wasted Nate got it seemed the looser his lips were getting, And the looser his lips were getting.well, the more direct and crass he was.

[You feel your face redden slightly and you knock back the rest of your drink silently. You weren’t expecting that sort of question.]
“I-i-i-it doesn’t really…affect me..like that.”
[Surprisingly, you shut up so you don’t dig yourself into a bigger hole. But you DO push your empty glass off to the side, suddenly not interested in ordering another drink.]
“Mmmmmaybe, you’re right, though. Wanna keep my wits about me if i’m gonna go home with a gal tonight.”
[Though, deep down, you knew the odds were not in your favour. They never were.]
Nate laughed, sound nearly giddy. He pushed his own glass aside at the cue, with a relaxed smile. “Mm. You just gotta-Listen, Listen, flirting is like a game of poker. If you play right, you go home with a hundred bucks.”
Nate laughed again, feeling more talkative than usual. His pupils were a bit blown, and he wasn’t quite sure how many drinks he had gone through. He had started drinking around noon to start with. Well, that and having taken part in some dubious activities before. All things aside, he was sure he was about where he should’ve been. And if he did something embarrassing or strange? Atleast his parents didn’t live in the city.
He shrugged to a question no one asked and peered at Larry.
