I very much enjoyed Olafur Eliasson’s creations, especially the ones with a strong connection to nature. His work finds the simplest aspects of life and nature, and displays them on a huge scale, making the previously unnoticed unignorable. It’s a good reminder of what art can be so good for - taking a step back and just observing, rather than an attempt to always find meaning.

It was interesting to see Maciunas set out to create an art movement, as so many through history have been unplanned. He is an amusing character, with the stubbornness of an army general and the imagination of a child. (In a good way) It was also fascinating to see Maciunas go back in history and label long-gone artists as “Fluxists.”

There’s a definite beauty in John Cage’s acceptance of all sound - his question of examining why we think something is ugly is particularly fascinating. In working with Adobe Audition, I’ve tried to keep that in mind, and I would attest that it holds true. In fact, a lot of these non-traditional musical sounds are beautiful not in spite of their simplicity, but because of it.

I’ve not interacted much, or at all, with generative art before this class, but after thinking about it, I wonder if flowers could be considered such. The gardener plants a seed and steps back, unable to alter the unique design of the final product. To add even more variables into the equation, what about an entire field of flowers? Perhaps flowers have unknowingly been the first form of generative art for thousands of years before computer programs?

BLOG POST #1
I recently had the opportunity to design a play poster for a production at my school that I was participating in. This was just as Covid-19 was hitting the US, so ultimately there was no physical performance, and by extension, no costumes. This meant I was free to design the characters and the entire feel of the play as I felt fit. A rare opportunity of creative freedom! I attempted to lessen some of the costume-less disappointment the cast felt by merging caricatures of them with what I imagined their costumes might look like. However, I suspect that anyone who sees this in a few years will undergo some form of “Zoom ptsd” as the layout is inspired by our Zoom script practices. I only found out later how much I had been coincidentally, or subconsciously, inspired by the poster for “The Brady Bunch.” Oh well.
