I once beat my school’s chess champion in a game because he spent the entire match desperately trying to work out my strategy because I was “smart” and therefore good at chess.

We were playing with a Lord of the Rings chess set. I was moving the characters I liked best.

13. what languages do they speak? how fluently?

maya speaks fluent english and russian, of course! and she learned latin when she was 15. she likes to make up latin/"scientific" names for different stuff she sees at the institute, like plants from the zone or whatever.

14. are they any good with numbers?

not as good as she wants to be, but better than most.
