i'm trying not to vagueblog but lmao talking about hatewatching as if it is like. spiritually destructive is insane. dude i'm reading a bad manga because i think it's funny to see how unfunny a gag manga can be. maybe let's calm it down a little bit

i read earthchild weekly from its release to death. i hate that manga. with all my heart. but as i read it, something started to happen to me.

I found it enthralling to see how the author desperately scrambled to try to find Anything to hold onto, pivoting their own story rapidly in an attempt to keep their dream afloat. i find something genuinely cogent and tragic in the effort, something that i feel genuine empathy for, and genuinely think about a lot. they got one shot at what i'm sure was their childhood dream, and they couldn't stick the landing. they couldn't ever find what made it work, and so it never did. that's fucking tragic, and i feel so much empathy for the artist. it's melancholic. do i hate that manga? yes, yes i do.

obviously like. i think getting too deep in the paint on hatewatching is insane. i was a rwby fan back in the day, i've seen some people whose hate very clearly just fell into parasociality aimed at the creatives.

but i genuinely and earnestly believe that engaging with bad art, even art you know you hate, is actually pretty good for you?? objectively, the works that have haunted me the most are works i hate, and they're the ones that I think have been most informative in finding my style, my passion, and my drive. because suddenly you find yourself feeling emotions you didn't expect, interrogating ideas that any more coherent or standard work would never bring to the table, or finding empathy for artists in a bad condition.
