love this. People often don't see Itsuki and I'm constantly glad when ppl do see him outside of the anime's kyon/itsuki fan service. Kozumi is a complex character with his own desires but I think people want to turn him into fan service which isn't right.

“I envy you” - Ramblings about Koizumi and Suzumiya

You know, I think the relationship between Suzumiya and Koizumi is probably one of the saddest, but also one the most fascinating ones in my opinion. Koizumi has said many occasions that he finds Suzumiya charming, and I guess he probably loves her too. I don´t talk about shipping too much in this blog and I am not really going to change that habit, but I find these two´s relationship so fascinating that I want to take a moment to ramble about it. 

For a long time Koizmui has had a connection to Suzumiya because of his powers. When Suzumiya is irritated, Closed Spaces are created where Celesticals appear to destroy things and release Suzumiya`s stress. Koizumi can sense this irritation and overall you could say that his powers are constructed around Suzumiya. In The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya Koizumi calls himself a tool of Suzumiya`s subconscious:

“No trick would deceive me, since I am, in a sense, a tool Suzumiya`s subconscious. Our sleeping beauty over there is not a clone nor an illusion.” 

Koizumi has a strong connection to Suzumiya, and he understand very well her thinking, usually being the one to de-construct it`s flow to Kyon. 

He is the yes man, agreeing most of the time Suzumiya`s plans what ever they are, also trying to provide her the tools and items needed so that she can carry out her plans. Now part of this is because they need to keep Suzumiya happy because if she is not, bad stuff will happen, but I`d like to think that on a personal level, Koizumi also wants to please Suzumiya. There is a moment in Surprise where they are talking about what if Suzumiya wanted huge amounts of pet hamsters, and Koizumi just says that he would do the best of his abilities to get them for her.  

Koizumi is willing to do all of these things for Suzumiya, and he is connected to her in an emotional level because of his powers. Despite these things, Suzumiya does not give him the attention Koizumi wishes he would gain. And that is the attention Kyon gets. I just find this irony that Suzumiya showers Koizumi with praises, giving him the role which makes him second in command basically, almost always praises him for his ideas and replies, and I think Suzumiya has never called Koizumi stupid, unlike she does with Kyon. He gets all of these from Suzumiya, but Koizumi knows that he is second to Kyon. While she calls Kyon stupid and what not a good chunk of the time, Suzumiya trusts Kyon very much. 

Koizumi feels envious towards Kyon, about the bond of trust he has with Suzumiya, and how she took an interest towards him without having any sort of special role. Kozumi says this in the alternate world. Also during the Endless Eight, Koizumi suggests that maybe he should take the role of whispering “I love you” in to Suzumiya`s ear. He then brushes it off, but I find his tone a bit melancholic especially in the anime version, when after that he says that it would only confuse Suzumiya. 

I just find it a bit of sad that even thou Koizumi is willing to do all of these various things to please Suzumiya and give her the things she wants, either of them being an agreement or building an villa in a remote island, she will never look at him the way Koizumi desires to. Suzumiya will shower him with praise and grand titles, but all of that must feel hollow and artificial compared to the bond that Suzumiya shares with Kyon. 

I would like to end this ramble on a positive note. While I think Koizumi is envy towards Kyon on some level, I think has come to accept his position. While Suzumiya does not look him the same way she look at Kyon, Koizumi has come to realize that he too was chosen by Suzumiya. He did not believe it at first, but his convinced of it near the end of Surprise: 

“I`ve become aware of that, yes. At first I only half believed it, and explained it away with as the product of happenstance, but now I no longer doubt. I am part of the SOS Brigade. “

He is a valued and loved member of the brigade, and if everything happen to him, Suzumiya would let all hell lose.

I always thought this.

The fandom loves Kyon/Koizumi to the point they put it in the chibi episodes. (which are largely just fan service fun) but that's just it. Fun fan service.

Koizumi is an interesting character that I wish had more time on screen to explore his character.

I've always been under the impression he held an unrequited crush/admiration/love toward Haruhi that went unnoticed. Outside of Kyon I don't think many people (characters or fans) paid it much mind.

The production team included the hints for a reason. It's a theme for him to always be Haruhi's yes man when he doesn't have to be. Him attending to her on the side even when she doesn't notice is part of who he is. He never really wants anything other than for her to be happy so much so that he's more attuned to her than Kyon and basically tries to subtly push Kyon to do things he can't.

Also for a character that chooses his word carefully- it's surprising that he'd joke about saying he loved her or mention his jealousy openly to someone else, especially Kyon. He shows his vulnerability/weakness to Kyon which also begs the question why does he ever only tell Kyon- cause he wants him to know. But why? Just interesting thoughts there.
