PSA
In response to some concerns that we've seen being brought up:
- It's not about whether people should or should not be offended by stereotypes, but the fact of the matter is that someone found it offensive, hence why we decided to remove the character. If other characters are offensive but nobody found themselves hurt by them, we wouldn't have much of an issue posting things as we, too, tend to view these as screenshots from a game. We're only trying to be accommodating.
- We are well aware that stereotypes can indeed be extremely true and we should not exclude representation just because it follows stereotype. As we mentioned before, we aren't in a position to speak about transmisogyny, and we're only trying to make inferences as to why the anon might have been hurt. We're glad if you aren't hurt by Jean Armstrong's character, but we don't really want to hurt the people who are, and we're trying make sense of this too. And it has also been brought to our attention that the first anon was not the only one made uncomfortable by Jean Armstrong's character.
- Also, we're really sorry if it came across as us trying to erase trans characters. We deleted it because we figured that, since the character was never explicitly stated as trans, it was meant as (rather offensive) stereotyping and not actual representation. Which might be a mistake and we apologise. (To clarify, we took it to mean that Jean was not trans, as it wasn’t explicit, and assumed that the way Jean was portrayed was actually just meant to be a humorous yet insulting stereotype.) Others have also seen things from this perspective, and we would like to accommodate for those who feel uncomfortable because they interpreted it as such.
We swear we weren’t trying to cause erasure, not to mention that the post wasn't deemed offensive because it seemed to have included a possibly trans character, and people were uncomfortable with that. People find it offensive because they understood it to be a mockery. We really aren't trying to erase characters for just seeming trans/GNC. If we were, we wouldn’t have posted Jean Armstrong in the first place. To reiterate, we took it down because other people found it offensive, and not due to them finding the existence of a potentially trans character offensive.
- Also, a literal definition of transmisogyny, whilst that includes trans erasure – which wasn't even explicit or intentional (the character was not explicitly trans, and the deletion was for the comfort of trans people) – is more so the hatred against trans people, specifically those on the more feminine end of the spectrum. I think we would be more transmisogynistic if we ignored the offense that we caused trans people and had left the posts up, despite knowing that people were made uncomfortable by it. We apologise if our intentions were not clear.
Note: all messages we have received can be seen below. We did see reblogs and replies, but we aren't including those as you can see them for yourself.
Thanks to all of you for sharing your opinions, and also the positive vibes. We really appreciate it.
We're sorry we aren't able to be accommodating for everyone. If there are any further concerns or suggestions on how to better handle this, please drop us an ask. However, we will take the time that we need to respond as best we can, so it won't be immediate.
This blog might go on semi-hiatus in light of exams, actually, but we’ll try to settle this first.
