@hprecfest Day 15: A Fic Over 50k
Not Really Here by @owlswithfins [Severus/Remus, M, 53k]
After the werewolf prank, Severus disappears. He’s still at Hogwarts—at least, he thinks he is—and he’s probably still alive, but no one can see or hear him. Except for Lupin. Remus, meanwhile, is avoiding the other Marauders—as well as everyone else—and Snape becomes the sole exception to his self-appointed isolation. As they work together to look for answers about Severus’ condition, the unlikely pair drift toward friendship. But building a relationship of any kind presents a challenge when neither of them is sure Severus exists at all.
This is the fic that really and truly sold me on the Remus/Severus ship dynamic. Oh my GOD it is amazing. I love love love the way it tangles with the many sides of characters--Marauders and Severus alike. It's some of the best writing I've read, and it's certainly one of the best pieces of marauders era fanfiction I've had the pleasure of reading as well. Fantastic writing, excellent portrayal of all the characters (especially Severus), and a fascinating concept.

Might actually cry a little bit (in a good way) - the new bill that just passed here in Minnesota granting paid medical leave to people caring for sick family members has such an intentionally expansive definition of "family" that biological and/or legal ties are not actually a prerequisite to qualify for the program. In fact, there's a portion of the bill that specifies anyone designated as family by the incapacitated party can receive the benefits.
Apparently this was done in part to make the policy as inclusive as possible of queer family structures and I am absolutely floored; as someone with a seriously chronically ill queerplatonic partner I worry a lot about my options as a primary caretaker, seeing as the fact that we are not legal partners bars us from so many other benefits, but the fact that this particular one would be inclusive of us (and poly partners, and single queer people with no ties to their biological family but close friends willing to help them out, etc) has given me more hope that may change someday than I think anything ever has.
This is how you do policy that benefits the entire queer community, including poly, ace, and aro folks for whom same-sex marriage has never offered the same legal rights (and plenty of other folks besides, like disabled people or people with terrible biological families -- you don't have to be LGBTQA+ for it to be a seriously important option). This is genuinely incredible. I was excited to see this pass even without knowing it would potentially apply to me, too, but now I'm a total grateful, emotional mess.

When a person with ADHD complains of severe anxiety, I recommend that the clinician not immediately accept the patient’s label for her emotional experience. A clinician should say, “Tell me more about your baseless, apprehensive fear,” which is the definition of anxiety. More times than not, a person with ADHD hyperarousal will give a quizzical look and respond, “I never said I was afraid.” If the patient can drop the label long enough to describe what the feeling is like, a clinician will likely hear, “I am always tense; I can’t relax enough to sit and watch a movie or TV program. I always feel like I have to go do something.” The patients are describing the inner experience of hyperactivity when it is not being expressed physically.
At the same time, people with ADHD also have fears that are based on real events in their lives. People with ADHD nervous systems are consistently inconsistent. The person is never sure that her abilities and intellect will show up when they are needed. Not being able to measure up at the job or at school, or in social circles is humiliating. It is understandable that people with ADHD live with persistent fear. These fears are real, so they do not indicate an anxiety disorder.

✨ WLW Wed: Ginmione ✨
A biweekly HP femslash rec list made by the lovely members of the HP SAFFICS (18+) discord server. See all previous rec lists in the WLW Library.
Currently: Hermione Granger/Ginny Weasley Previously: Teacher/Student (see list)
💫 LONG (>10k) 💫
Written in the Body by poetheather [M, 319k]
Being tortured by by Bellatrix changes Hermione in a big way. She decides that no one else is allowed to write her life and is determined to live her life her own way. This includes going after the love of her dreams. Now all she has to do is figure out who they are
Distractions by @morningsound15 [T, 86.7k]
Ron and Hermione have recently broken up, and Ginny — concerned for her best friend — has decided that the only thing for Hermione to do now is to date someone new to make Ron jealous. And who better than Hermione’s best friend (and coincidentally Ron’s younger sister) to drive him absolutely mental?
Image of You by angelic1_hp [M, 73.3k]
The engagement party of Ron and Hermione is one that Ginny really didn't want to attend. Ginny has tried to lose herself in alcohol, sex and a relationship with a man she could never love until the one she really wants comes back into her life.
Rumour Has It by Melacka, @artymakeart, @showknight [T, 31.2k] WITH ART!
Ginny doesn't remember giving the reporter the quote, but she's certainly never been one to back away from a challenge. And she's certainly not going to deny that she's in a relationship with Hermione just to make a few bigots feel better about themselves. Or, Ginny accidentally outs Hermione to the whole Wizarding World. Fake dating shenanigans ensue.
The Thing With Feathers by @maraudersaffair [E, 25.4k]
After Ron’s death, Hermione feels adrift with only her books and Ministry job to keep her grounded. This all changes when she accepts an invitation to Ginny’s Quidditch match and catches herself wondering: when did Ginny get so fit?
Gluttony by Ely_Baby [E, 11.2k]
The Second Wizarding War damaged people more deeply than they'd like to believe.
💫 MEDIUM (3-10k) 💫
Last Minute Admission by flooj9235 [G, 9.8k]
In the last moments before the Trio heads off to hunt Horcruxes, Hermione takes a moment to tell Ginny something important.
Unexpected Pleasures by kerisempai [M, 7.1k]
A case of mistaken identity leads to questions for Hermione.
Like That by Robyn_Iwanagi [T, 6.5k]
Ginny's never minded sharing a bed with Hermione when she stays over, well, if you don't count that she has a—frankly, massive—crush on her... And she's still got a couple days before the World Cup, and ... She has no idea how she's going to manage. And thats not even getting started on the cuddling.
Five Times Ginny Asked Hermione To Marry Her by icerose92 [T, 5.4k]
It took Ginny a while to get Hermione to agree to marry her.
Wishful Thinking by @owlswithfins [T, 4.2k]
Harry and Hermione are both in love with a Weasley. Like canon, but gayer.
The Witches Are Coming by @neontinkerbell [E, 4.2k]
Ginny Weasley and Hermione Granger get their bloody revenge, then they Get Some.
💫 SHORT (<3k) 💫
Sneaking by tealeaf523 (ConstantComment) [E, 1.2k]
Hermione and Ginny keep disappearing together; the boys are about to accidentally find out what they've been up to.
Untitled by Anonymous [T, 1.6k]
Ginny is all warmth and strength and movement.
handing you my whole life by @evadwrites [M, 1.0k]
Hermione thinks she’s destined to kneel before Ginevra Potter, always begging for scraps. For years, she will wonder whether Ginny’s willingness to offer them was born out of cruelty or kindness. The question will remain unspoken, unanswered.
The Practical by Jude [M, 285]
Ginny thought everything was going along swimmingly. And then Hermione pulled the book out from under her pillow.

i'm founding a new school of media criticism which i've decided to call Bitism. the Bitist school of literary analysis asks a simple question: is this work committed to the bit?
you see, any work of fiction is either committed to the bit or it's not. the worst thing a piece of media can be is ashamed of its own premise, of the genre it in habits, of the tropes and aesthetics we expect from it. to be committed to the bit does not inherently make it good, but it makes it more worthy of respect than those which are not.
also, that's not to say that a story cannot parody or criticize the genre it inhabits or mimics. we can discuss the bit, we can deconstruct the bit, we can ask ourselves whether or not it's a good bit, but to commit to it first will strengthen these discussions, not detract from them. commitment to the bit is, after all, the first step to genuine sincerity. and sincerity will exalt and elevate parody such that it can stand on its own feet.
commitment to the bit turns melodrama into camp, elevates parody to biting commentary, and allows cringe to open up into a resonant, if unpolished, expression of true emotion.
fully expect bitism to take the literary world by storm sometime in the next few years.

one thing i need to start living by is “become the thing that you want” if i want friends who throw themed parties maybe i should start throwing those parties. if i want someone who writes me love letters maybe i should start writing letters for the people i love. if i want to hang out at museums and pretty cafes maybe i should invite my friends to these places. and maybe even then i won’t find the kind of people i want to be around. but then i would have become the exact person i want to be around. and maybe that’s good enough.

culture around fanfiction has just gotten so...weird? not necessarily on the writer's side, but it seems to really be showing on the passive reader's side. not every writer is writing something to be the "next big thing" in a fandom, and hoping it's seen as a "staple" of fandom culture.
they're not writing it with the hope it going the way of "the love hypothesis" and becoming a published piece of work. they're not writing to compete with other writers, especially those that they're genuinely friends with.
most of us, in my opinion, are writing because, well, we just love to write and have a story we want to share! we care about these characters just as much as you do and just want to tell a certain type of story with that same amount of care; no matter how many kudos, hits or shares it gets.
we don't see stories as "content" that need to a certain metric; we see them as a way to celebrate something we all love.

Every time I see a post that hates on booktok and its ilk, I just think about all the marginalized artists who've had to utilize social media to get anyone to read their work because traditional publishing continues to be a cesspool of bigotry and gatekeeping. I think about the early years of self-publishing and how indie artists fought and scraped over the course of years for crumbs of legitimacy.
It's a specific kind of disheartening to be an indie artist that has to constantly see people with little to no personal experience within the wider industry make a lot of shitty comments about the methods they've been forced to use, regardless of the reasons why, to garner even a fraction of the budget, support, and attention that traditional, conventionally acceptable media is awarded without question.
Anyway, if you want to encourage diversity and authenticity in publishing, maybe consider that instead of making blanket statements about the validity of where you heard about a piece of media, you could just support the artists who make the work that you like and ignore the ones you don't.
Tiktok isn't infecting books with Bad Media Cooties anymore than Twitter was 10 years ago.
Hi, I was very active in writer spaces on twitter and its earlier contemporaries back in the day, and I'm very familiar with the rhetoric y'all keep spouting. It's not new, it's not correct, and you look like assholes.
If you don't like something, you don't have to finish it, and you certainly don't have to recommend it.
Otherwise, just say you hate indie artists and go suck PRH's dick so I don't have to fuckin' hear it anymore.
