Curly pursed his lips as he watched the fax machine go. Turin was an android, and androids made mistakes…which probably makes them more human than anything…but watching the papers eject hurt him a little bit.

So much company paper wasted.

That’s at least 30000 credits docked.

The thought of his poor paycheck weighed heavy.

“Turin…please…my pay…”

Curly’s head whips towards the ceiling, his body completely still—minus the rise and fall of his chest, of course, that came with his slow and steady breathing.

His eyes were wide and piercing as they stared.

“….nope. I’m not fucking doing this, not today.”

Curly swiveled back in his chair, grabbing the paper from the machine with an air of nonchalance. He then held the note up to read.

“….excuse me?”

His eyes flashed back to the fax machine, and then back to the paper. The captain even read it again, just with shakier hands. What in the hell?

“Daisuke,” he called out, “if you’re messing with me, it’s not fucking funny! Stop messing with the bloody fax machine!!”

“Forget about if you deserve it or not.” He took a breath. “You deserve to live, Daisuke. Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health. And you’re right—you are the captain now. And the captain shouldn’t fly without a clear head, or bad things happen.” Curly takes a pause, his icy gaze falling. “I should know.”

What would Curly do?

Fail, probably. He already did. He might have even ended his life too—a captain should always go down with the ship. But Daisuke hadn’t harmed himself yet, which meant there was hope.

“Breathe with me, Daisuke. Just…inhale and exhale.” His breathing was ragged and choppy, lungs still wounded from all the screaming and wheezing. Even still, the captain took long breaths. “In through your nose, down into your chest, and out through your mouth. Yeah?”

Maybe Curly was a being of Daisuke’s subconscious now…becoming a mental manifestation happened enough with Jimmy’s mind, so this wasn’t entirely out of the question. But then why not Swansea? Surely an imaginary Swansea had more to say to Daisuke.

Or…maybe…it had to be the Captain, because the Captain was grief, and the Captain was guilt, and the Captain was the one thing that knew both feelings enough to relieve them.

That being said, Jimmy was different. He deserved to feel the guilt of abandoning the option to Take Responsibility. But Daisuke was a kid.

“Take it slow,” he replied, a calm and warm tone contrasting the horrific appearance of a mutilated man. “There’s about 5 months left of air for one person, as long as you don’t hyperventilate…and I’m sure you could find the code scanner and make yourself a cake if you need a lift in spirits. There are some sticky notes in my quarters if you can reach it—take some time to draw, Daisuke. Do anything you need to do to take your mind off.”

And with that, he leaned down, and gave a soft kiss to her lips. “Good?”

“Never?” Curly’s face is unreadable…a rare occurrence, seeing as how his expression is usually so transparent.

Best not to make this an ordeal, he figured.

“Right. Forget I asked.”

“Have you ever said ‘I’m sorry’, Jim?”

The Captain crosses his arms, leaning back nonchalantly in his chair. “Not a dig. Just a thought. Genuine question, and you don’t have to answer.”

A frown. Jimmy can't recall ever a time where he had to apologize. He doesn't apologize unless he means it. He regards Curly with scrutinity.

Why should I ever say sorry when I haven't done anything that warrants an apology?
