One day I'm going to rewrite 320 State Street to not be so jarring. The setting is my Uncle's store, but I changed aspects of it for flavor. If I rewrite it, I think I'll write it closer to real life.

My niece is adorable and sassy, but she’s always been rather shy around me. I don’t live in her city, so she doesn’t see me often.

We’re all meeting up for some family thing and I originally wasn’t going to come.

But then my niece asked my sister “is my aunt PeyPey gonna be there?”

I’m comin’ baby, wait for me!!

I’ve thought about this too, and I do love this episode. Just hear me out:

All of Astrid’s insecurities about their relationship come from looking at Mala and Dagur. They’re a brand new couple, but Hiccstrid hasn’t been dating that long at this point. To see that behavior, most couples would think ‘ah the honeymoon phase, where you can’t keep your hands off each other’ but Astrid is seeing that her and Hiccup didn’t go through that. And when Snotlout points it out, Hiccup is right, their love has been developing for years. They’ve gotten to know each other through their whole lives. Of course they weren’t close, but we don’t know what their friendship was like in their early life.

It’s never explicitly stated anywhere, so I’m making assumptions. But Astrid has never been in a relationship. Who knows what love was modeled to her like on Berk? Are her parents affectionate? She may have seen Dagur and Mala and thought ‘thats what couples do. We should do that. Why aren’t we doing that?’

I will say they did do Astrid a disservice by not allowing her to just talk to Hiccup about her insecurities. But sometimes we just aren’t rational. Especially with people we love. Hiccstrid does have a tendency to be on the same wavelength and can guess what the other is feeling. Astrid assumes Hiccup saw what she saw and thinks the same.

Now, you’re right about Hiccup being extremely stressed. I don’t blame him for not noticing the necklace. He obviously had a million things to think about.

I don’t think Astrid should have given him an ultimatum. But I do think it’s valid that she was upset. But that’s all par the course of a new relationship. They’re good at talking about everything else, but learning how to ask your partner to be more affectionate is a challenge.

Luckily, at the end of the episode, she seems to have understood where she went wrong. Hiccup apologizes for not noticing the necklace, but she tries to apologize for getting caught up in her emotions.

Then of course, we get the greatest kiss in the series.

Which I think is a sign that Hiccup was thinking the same thing as Astrid at the beginning of the episode. Maybe they should be more affectionate? But Astrid’s never said anything about it. Does she want that? He has his own insecurities to work through and try to gauge what Astrid’s okay with.

This is my opinion, of course. My interpretation. Take it as you please.

As I rewatch rtte, I realize there is only one single episode that actually annoys me: Mi amore ala. I hate how Hiccup's and Astrid's relationship was handled in that episode. I love Hiccstrid, and I love Astrid, but in that episode she is just so annoying.

She doesn't really seem like the type to get jealous or insecure by others, not the way they portray it there. And then she has this tantrum because Hiccup doesn't notice the necklace. The same necklace he gave her as a betrothal gift. The audacity, I say. She didn't give him anything.

"she was the gift" nah bullshit.

She even said it in that episode, how good of a gifter he is because he notices things, the important things. Yeah, he didn't see the necklace, but don't be such an asshole. They were on a mission and the poor dude is the main target of who knows how many people. Dude is stressed out and worried about really important and dangerous things, he's going to miss some things.

I love their relationship, but that episode is bullshit, tbh

Astrid approached the young human male. "It's not wise to travel these parts alone," she said.

"You're alone," he pointed out, blushing slightly at her chastising tone and standing up quickly, brushing dust and dirt off himself in an attempt to make himself look presentable.

She paused at that. He had a fair point. But an invalid one. "I can clearly handle myself," she said, gesturing the dead or unconscious bodies around her.

He couldn't argue with that.

She reached him, taking his chin in her hands and turning his head, inspecting his face for any visible wounds. "Let's get a good look at you, Boy," she said.

For a reason he could not quite articulate--perhaps because he was not a boy, but a grown man of twenty years, and not even short for a human at 6'1--but being called "boy" by this gorgeous, tall-even-for-an-orc, strong and powerful she-orc who had just saved him made Hiccup want to prove to her, no matter the cost, that he was no boy, but a man.
