i cannot do another round of "is shaving feminist?" discourse again, i simply cannot do it. is shaving feminist? no! do feminists shave their bodies? yes! is this a deep betrayal of principles? not really! do some women actually shave for the mythical "sensory reasons"? well, considering that my number one reason for shaving my legs in the summer is because my ceiling fan blows on the hair and i'm constantly having mini freakouts that i've got a bug crawling on me, i'd imagine some do! is it okay for a woman to say to herself "i realize i'm mostly doing this because i don't want to be treated worse by people in the world who find my unshaven legs disgusting, but i'm still going to do it because i don't think suffering for no reason is virtuous" and shave? yes! will yelling at her to "think critically about her choices" until she agrees with you actually work? no! does any of this make it any easier to get an abortion in this country? nope! have we replaced the "is this pop star a feminist?" discourse of the 2010s with "are your personal choices antithetical to the tenets of feminism?" discourse in the 2020s, none of which is conveniently focused on the actual loci of power?? hahahahahahaaaaa

perhaps an unpopular take but I do think the tendency to automatically equate queerness with being interesting and good is how you get shitty blogs like that "which gay ship is straightest" because straight on the that blog isn't actually referring to heterosexuality, itself ultimately a completely neutral institution on its own, but "gay ship that isn't cool and interesting and matching my narrow ideas of queerness" or just old-fashioned ship warring. Like, there are immensely boring and even terrible gay people in real life, and certainly in fiction, and they are still 100% gay. Queerness is an identity based on who you're attracted to or not attracted to based on your gender, and your gender relative to the one you were assigned at birth; this says literally nothing in any way about your morality, worth as a person, or how fun and interesting you are - it is just as neutral a concept as being straight. The idea of this being good/bad cool/boring etc is all just in relation to bigotry, and I get it - after being told you were bad for whom you are attracted to or the gender you are, you want to counter that - but the idea that members of the oppressed class are all good and cool people is detrimental to class consciousness and also just incorrect.

This also comes up in fandom where people try to argue that an m/f ship is secretly queerer (*cough* handmaiden and feudal lord) to justify it and it's like. No one will take your gay card for liking it, the same way no one takes your gay card for disliking a queer ship. A pattern of never liking queer ships is personally a red flag, but isolated examples mean nothing. Gay ships are gay because they are not between a man and a woman. That's literally it. There's no gradation. We can I suppose have a conversation about the least nuclear-family model/two kids and a white picket fence type ships, but a lot of popular queer ships and uh, particularly a lot of the popular queer ships among the sort of people who argue that some ships are gayer than others, would score very low on that.

I could rant for hours about how this manga is badly written, pro-police, pro-oppressors, ableist and deeply crual. I'm really not enjoying it (I haven't for years now actually).

Killing yourself doesn’t imply self forgiveness. The contrary, in fact. (KPDH)

So this came up during a discussion under this other previous post, and I think it’s worth expanding on it.

I don’t understand what it is with the fandom of kpop demon hunters thinking that Jinu sacrificing himself for Rumi implies in any way he finally forgave himself for what happened to his family.

Especially considering, like I already said many times before, that his arc starts explicitly with him stating that his problem (and therefore what he narratively must grow out of) is that he can’t live with his guilt. Which is why he wants his memories of it erased. Something that is framed as bad and cowardish, because it is. One can’t escape the consequences of their actions.

However, I know I’ve said this already but it really bugs me, death is not a solution either.

Now, personally I’m not a fan of death as something that redeems characters in general. However, such a choice would have made more sense if Jinu’s narrative path had been set on him understanding the consequences his actions have on others. This way, his death for the sake of another would have shown growth into someone who finally understood the value of other people, and who can put them before himself.

However, Jinu’s shame is specifically caused by a sin the gravity of which he already knows. And for which he already paid hard consequences with centuries of slavery to Gwi-Ma.

He’s always described as selfish, but clearly he did use that time to reflect on what he did and sonehow mature from it. Even though he eventually has a fallback by betraying Rumi, at first he’s sincerely trying to help her. In their first fight he had all interest in exposing her patterns, and yet he hid her and protected her.

He could have broken apart the Huntrix immediately, yet he didn’t. He did the selfless thing already.

Sure he’s still his own weak self, as is shown by his later betrayal, but he already had the potential to grow far more!

Narratively speaking, there was no reason for him to die except the lack of time in the script.

Death, at least in a situation like Jinu’s, is the exact opposite of dealing with consequences. May as well have erased his memories. Because when the problem lays in living with who you are and what you do, then death is just the easy way out. Suicide.

In his case specifically and the way his arc is built, his sacrifice only communicates (to me at least) that he let his shame win over him to the point that he stopped giving value to his own life.

Of course though it’s not that easy. It would’ve been complicated to write a path of self forgiveness for something as horrible as what Jinu did. However, that’s what forgiveness is. A path.

Not something you can just cut short with a cool self sacrifice in the name of love. It’s an ugly, devastating, painful process. One where you have to find the strength of giving yourself another chance at life, because if you don’t, who will?

Forgiveness is selfish. It’s always something you do for yourself, whether it be forgiving someone who hurt you, or yourself because you fucked up bad.

The people that Jinu hurt (his family, the people whose souls he stole) can’t forgive him nor can be helped because they’re gone forever. He can’t make up to them nor ask them to do the job for him (which of course still wouldn’t help him in his case.)

I really think this movie would have given a real blast at society’s stigmas (which was the point of the movie, those patterns are clearly an allegory for anything that can be discriminated against) if it had allowed Jinu too to live. Because there are some kinds of shame that are not innocent or solvable with hugs and love, and yet we all must deal with at some point.

Guilt. Mistakes.

But I guess that in a film based on the world of idols there can’t be anything too ugly and inconvenient.

saw an elderly woman walking around with a tote bag whose design were the four AO3 fic category squares and she very excitedly asked if i was a reader or a writer bcs nobody else at the con had recognized it, and after telling her that i've been writing fic since fanfic.net, she solemnly nodded and explained that she'd been reading fic since "the days of personal websites" but that she only started writing fanfic when she was 47 and oh my god when i tell you that i genuinely teared up on the spot!!!!! like!!! HELL YEAH???? LITERALLY NEVER TOO OLD TO START WRITING. NEVER TOO OLD TO WRITE AND SHARE YOUR FIC.
