What is a lararium?
for a more detailed answer, I would recommend checking out this post: Making a Lararium - Part I.
that being said, the Lararium – pl. Lararia – is the Ancient Roman altar. back then, it was used to leave offerings for domestic gods, such as Lares, Penates, Vesta and the personal Genius/Iuno.
with time, these altars also started including the deities from the public cult – like Vulcan, Diana, Bacchus, etc – according to the head of the family's preference.
nowadays, Roman polytheists tend use the Lararium for every ritual – not only offerings, that is – due to the lack of alternative places where to practice their religion.

hope everything is clear enough! let me know if it isn't. wish you a wonderful day! 🙌🏻💗

Janus // Iunonius Geminus
Tumblr media
══════════
𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬
i. introduction
ii. who is he?
iii. associations
iv. offerings
v. modern practice
vi. resources
══════════
𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
hello everyone! i am very eager and excited to be writing and sharing this post with you all in honor of my patron Janus! this has been a wiki that’s been in the works for quite awhile and one that i am very eager and excited to share - i will say that any gnosis added will be explicitly stated as such or marked with a “*” - so without further ado, let’s begin!
══════════
𝐖𝐇𝐎 𝐈𝐒 𝐇𝐄?
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
first and foremost who is Janus? Janus is the roman god of doorways, change, beginnings, transitions, time, prophecy, history, omens, all dualities (ex. war/peace, but also things like beginning/end, life/death, barbarism/civilization, urban/rural, youth/adulthood, the list goes on). he is known to be the initiator of all human life and he who watched over all historical eras (the one who transitions them). Janus surprisingly, seems to be a very forgotten god among modern practices despite being historically an extremely important and influential god to the Romans.
Janus in mythology appears in two different manners: one being the very first god, a primordial being who guarded the gates of heaven and watched over humanity + the universe as a whole. he alone held access to heaven and to the gods, thus historically was invoked first during any ceremony or ritual. offerings were given to Janus firstly before given to any other god, and the Romans worshiped Janus as arguably one of the first gods. he was referred to as the “god of gods” due to his belief as being the first god.
the second being that Janus was a human. Janus is said to have ruled alongside a Roman king named Camesus (not to be confused with his later on wife, Camise/Camasnea). Janus was exiled from a Greek province and then married his first wife, Camise, they had children together yet eventually she died. when she died he ruled Latium and under his ruler-ship it was peaceful for years, the myth states that he received Saturn when Saturn was driven out of Greece and thus after his death, Janus was deified. i sadly cannot find if his first wife Camise was deified, however i believe that they are both together again and happy along with being with his two other wives (thus a healthy and divine polyamourous “couple” - however, this is just my belief, upg and experience). after his wife’s death, he did marry Jurtuna, the goddess (or sometimes translated as nymph) of fountains, wells and springs.
it is also important to note that Janus is sometimes identified with the god Sol, the god of the sun. he is sometimes coupled/said to be married to Jana, who is sometimes identified as the goddess Diana. however, it is up to the individual on how they interpret it and the origins of both Janus and Jana stem from Diana/Dianus or Sol/Luna . Janus also originally started as the masculine opposite of Diana (Dianus), thus started as the god of light and the sun, and progressively became a creator, and then a god of gateways whom we know today.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
because, sadly, his cult has no information on it due to lack of texts, it is impossible to reconstruct Janus’ cult or the practices and worship that might have entailed. asides from the festival and writing about the temple, there isn’t anything on Janus’ cult. and so, using context clues and historical context is the best i can do to honor and worship Janus in what i believe to be the best way that i can produce.
Janus is not a very popular god these days, and in roman paganism (from the communities i’ve been in and seen) is only invoked due to tradition and is not himself worshiped. the worship i give to Janus consists of prayer, lighting incense, providing food or drink offerings, greenery offering, devoting listening to his playlist, reminding myself of transitions, honoring his wives, touching in the divine masculine, understanding dualities, passing through doorways i think of him etc. i do things and live my life in honor of him the best i can. his altar space is by other roman gods and his wives are conjoined with his - i worship them all together.
and thus, i conclude this post. thank you all for reading and i hope you enjoyed! i hope Janus gets more recognition and love, but if not writing about my patron also warms my heart.
Laus be Janus

Deity Worship Tarot Spread !
Tumblr media
Hi all! This a tarot spread I recently designed to connect more to my deities! This guide is designed for those who have already identified the deity/deities they’re working with but are a little lost regarding their personal interpretation of the deity or how they wish to worship them. This spread is designed to be used with one god or spirit at a time. If you wish to use less cards, feel free to remove cards 3 and 6 for a six card reading.
Card 1: What area of my life will you be present in?
Most gods have multiple domains that they rule over. Will Apollo help you with arts or healing? Will Diana help you with empowerment or animal care?
Cards 2-4: What cards do you feel drawn to (connections to meanings or illustrations)?
How does your deity view themselves? How do they wish to present themselves to you? For example, there’s a difference between how the Romans and the Greeks perceived the same gods.
Cards 5-7: How can I best connect with you? What offerings/acts can I give/fulfil to strengthen our relationship or show my commitment?
Pretty self-explanatory here; you’re asking what your deity asks of you. Sometimes they might say nothing and leave the decision to you, but other times, they may ask you to do something specific (maybe Proserpina might ask you to purchase a new house plant!).
Card 8: How do you personally feel about my want to work with you?
Just because you want to work with a deity, doesn’t mean they’re always on board. Maybe they’re hesitant, maybe they think you’re a bad match, or maybe they’re delighted! It’s important to establish a baseline. Your deity being unsure doesn’t mean you have to abandon hope—all relationships take work.
Tumblr media
Here’s what my first time using the template looked like! I did a tarot reading with accompanying oils and crystals, praying and communicating with a particular deity… I wonder if you can guess who it was based on the cards? 👀
