This moment doesn’t come up often in discussions: Mary giving her informed consent to Abe and Anna’s affair - with conditions. Which is a shame, really, as it shows Mary being the strong woman she is; acknowledging the reality as (she thinks) it is and aiming to manage it to the best of her abilities.

His musings were far from the truth.
Clara had loved being a wife. She loved maintaining a warm and loving home, teaching the children of Township in the afternoons, and preparing delicious meals for Silas to come home to.
Oh, how she'd lived for his beaming smile when he'd take in that first whiff of supper -- how he'd pull her close and kiss her twice over.
One for a proper greeting, and another to return the one I took with me this morning, he'd say.
It'd made her hum with delight, her cheeks flushed with insurmountable admiration. In her heart, she knew she wanted the same with Benjamin. Naturally, there'd be differences, but that was okay. Benjamin was not Silas, and Clara didn't want him to be. All she wanted was for Benjamin to be himself and to be with him.
Yet, she couldn't permit herself to be so selfish. No matter how badly she wished for that life, she'd likely never see it come to fruition. With how things were, she was bound to leave this world before long, and for all she knew, Benjamin might very well meet the same fate.
Neither of them could be certain of anything anymore.
She shivered when he brushed his lips along her scars while gently tracing her shoulder, eager to soothe his lover's grief. It prompted her to close her eyes as she was robbed of every breath. Her heat still ached pleasurably from their dalliance, his ardor still warm and slick between her thighs.
"Clara, please..."
Benjamin's heartfelt plea tore at her as he lightly gripped her arm, wishing she'd oblige him with a glance. Clara drew in a deep breath in hopes it would help her fight the urge to relent, turn around, and collapse into his warm embrace.
"Will you not stay with me? What's so terrible about finding solace in each other's arms? What is so wrong about feeling whole in another's companionship -- mine and yours, specifically?"
Whole...
Yes, she supposed that was the appropriate word to describe this feeling, but such a revelation only served to upset her further.
Not wishing to be cruel to him, she reached up and clasped his hand, squeezing lightly, though she still stubbornly kept her head turned away, if only to spare herself of looking into his sad beryl eyes.
"We've done a great disservice to each other, haven't we?..." she paused, sniffling as her nose grew wet, then continuing in a shaky voice, "I enticed you into something that couldn't possibly last forever, and you gave me a reason to love again -- to live again...."
Half her heart had already been crushed when Danny had so unexpectedly passed, followed soon by the other half when Silas was killed. With her world completely torn away from her, she'd felt as though she were dead inside, a walking corpse like the unsettling legends from the tropical colonies.
Then Benjamin had come along, and as much as he'd infuriated her, as much as she'd hated him for his wrongful allegiance, he'd thawed the heart she'd thought lost, and claimed it for his own.
"I cannot afford the luxury of believing happiness is attainable for me while Lindsey Wofford still lives, nor while this war carries on."
Weak in her confession, she failed to maintain the cold shoulder and turned to cradle his face, unable to stand the overwhelming spell he had her under.
"You're many things, Benjamin Tallmadge... you're irritating, hot-headed, argumentative, impulsive, and terribly stubborn... but you're also passionate, intelligent, resilient, courageous, and remarkably selfless..."
If only she could kiss him and tell him she'd gladly stay. She wanted to. She did. But how could she when there were risks to be taken, and everything to lose?
Tenderly rubbing her thumb across his mildly stubbled cheek, Clara offered a meager smile, the pain evident on her eyes.
"If you were to be killed, the tragedy would surely end me, and my relentless desire to protect you makes me sick with worry. Despite this fight for freedom, neither of us had the right to make the other care so strongly when we knew what would be at stake."
She hesitated, jaw tight as she carefully prepared her next statement.
"You surely understand that I don't expect to survive the eventual encounter with Wofford. He has a gang of ruffians at his disposal and I'm merely one woman..."
"What about the future?"
Perplexed, Benjamin sat up straight, attempting to get a feel for her words beyond the stiff, clipped clues she provided. "I want a future," he cautiously treaded. "I know you undoubtedly wouldn't wish to be a wife, but-"
"If you survive this war," Clara cut in, "if the rebels win and make the world good again...What then? Do you not long for domestic bliss? Is that not what you fight for now? A happy life, a darling wife, and children of your own?"
Brows screwing inward, Benjamin frowned as she still refused him the courtesy of eye contact. "Yes," he affirmed. "Of course I want a family, but Clara: I think you and I both know full well that God sometimes has other plans."
He could feel her trembling beneath his palm, the first true sign of weakness and fear that she'd dared to exhibit. Heart aching for her, he stooped enough to brush his lips along the scars on her back, his kisses gently tracing her shoulder as she shook her head.
"I cannot," she warned. "If I do, I won't be able to go through with this..."
Benjamin lifted his head again, stunned. "If you need to plead with yourself to go against my wish -- against your own heart's wish -- then shouldn't that prove once and for all what you should choose? Clara, please..." Throat aching, he took hold of her arm again, pleadingly tugging with the hopes of being afforded her gaze. "Will you not stay with me? What's so terrible about finding solace in each other's arms? What is so wrong about feeling whole in another's companionship -- mine and yours, specifically?"
