Culebra
(small island, 45 minute ferry ride off the coast of the big island of Puerto Rico)
Water: very calm, peaceful, natural pools. flamenco beach, playa larga, playa tamarindo pictured above
Land: dry, very beautiful, animals like lizards, pelicans, turtles, cacti
Activities: coral reefs great for snorkeling, swimming, exploring
What Makes this Spot Unique: this island is very small and fun to explore, many people rent golf carts, great for a day trip
Parking: all over the island (renting a jeep is recommended for rough terrain)

Reserva Natural de la Laguna Tortuguero (Manatí)
Water: this beach has rocky areas, but you can find spots in the water where the bottom is sand, not rocks. there are natural pools where the water is a little calmer between rocks, but you have to find them
Land: rocky, sandy, little caves, crabs
Activites: rock climbing, swimming, lots of shade, there is a path through the palm trees with a semi-intact board walk
What Makes this Spot Unique: to get to this beach you need to do a 15 minute easy hike. This spot is also popular for mountain bikers and has trails for bikes
Parking: just off the main road there is a dirt parking lot at the entrance to the hiking path

Cayo Icacos
Water: super clear, calm, beautiful aquamarine blue, ocean floor is mostly sandy and shallow
Land: brown and white sand, lots of shells, not too much shade
Activities: some people go as organized tour groups and park catamaran boats off the coast and hang out, also great for snorkeling
What Makes this Spot Unique: this is a separate island from the main island of Puerto Rico and you take a water taxi to get there (a motorboat, we paid $20 per person) from Fajardo, the ride is about 15 minutes and picks you back up later in the day
Parking: parking lot by the water taxi dock
