“Would you stop flinching?” Jordy sighs with feigned exasperation, contorting her neck and torso to get a better angle.

Mason is laying with his head in her lap, his body tensing with irritation at every click of her camera’s shutter. He fixes her with a pointed glare.

“I thought we were just testing the settings or whatever,” he groans with a roll of his eyes before letting his mouth curl into a slight smirk. “I would never have agreed to this if I knew you were going to be such a pain in the ass.”

Jordy peeks out from behind the viewfinder to stick out her tongue.

He’s not wrong, though. The only reason Mason is humoring this little photoshoot is to help her acclimate to her new camera—most likely out of pity, since her trusty old Olympus OM-1 had been an unfortunate casualty of Mr. Yu’s rose-scented bathwater all those weeks ago.

Another *shk* and a flip of the film advance lever before Jordy looks down to meet Mason’s grimace with a cheeky grin.

“Maybe I just want a nice photo of you to look at,” she says with a wink. “You know, when I’m alone.”

A deep and satisfied chuckle rumbles through Mason’s chest at this, relaxing the tightness in his shoulders as his smirk returns.

“Oh, sweetheart,” he coos, “if you wanted dirty photos of me, all you had to do was ask.”

Jordy hums affectionately, letting her eyes roam over the contours of his face, the rich golden-brown of his skin.

It’s comfortable, this ease they’ve fallen into.

And although the thought is too terrifying to acknowledge right now, she knows deep down that her desire to capture this moment has far less lascivious intentions than her playfulness may have implied.

A teasing pinch to her side breaks her train of thought before it can take an uneasy turn, however, and for that she is grateful. This, she knows. Flirting, she knows.

“You gonna wrap this up anytime soon, Annie Leibovitz?”

Jordy snorts. “Since when do you know Annie Leibovitz?”

But Mason just scowls again, the tightness in his body returning after the brief distraction their banter had afforded him.

Jordy sighs. That won’t do. Reaching above them to adjust her ring light, she decides to take a new approach.

“Okay. I want you to try something for me.”

The raised eyebrow she is met with is skeptical at best, but he lets her continue.

“Verda taught me this meditation thing to relax my body when I get too overwhelmed with a case.”

He scoffs now, clearly about to question what the hell meditation’s got to do with her annoying camera and its annoying fucking sounds, but she clicks her tongue before he can protest further.

“Just trust me, okay?” She raises her own eyebrows to show that she’s serious. “Close your eyes.”

After a stiff pause, Mason sighs and crosses his arms defiantly, but he adjusts his position on her lap and closes his eyes all the same.

Jordy smiles softly at his resigned cooperation and quietly tweaks her camera’s ISO.

“Okay, now I want you to focus your senses on the streets outside and tell me what you hear.”

“I hear everything, sweetheart,” he deadpans.

“I know dumbass, but try to isolate one sound at a time.”

Mason grumbles, but obliges.

A car alarm two streets over. Some kids fighting over a bike. Leaves blowing in the trees.

*shk*, click.

Less of an obvious flinch this time, but he’s still tense. She tries again.

“Okay, what about inside the apartment building—what can you smell?”

A pause, and then a small smirk. “One of your neighbors is smoking weed again.”

*shk*, click.

Better.

Mason shifts his body again, letting one arm drop to his side as he focuses. Okay, now we’re getting somewhere.

A crinkle of his nose. “Someone’s cooking some sugary abomination down the hall.”

Jordy laughs, flicking the film advance lever and bringing the camera to her face once more. “Maybe they’re willing to share.”

But Mason doesn’t seem to be listening, now. Through the viewfinder, she can see a softening in the pinch of his eyebrows, an easing of his shoulders away from his ears.

“And…” he takes a visible breath, “I can smell you.”

Jordy’s finger freezes where it hovers over the shutter button.

“Me?” she prompts, trying to keep her voice casual despite the involuntarily uptick in her heartbeat which, fuck, surely he can hear…

But instead of teasing smirk she expects, the only look that crosses Mason’s face is a relaxed half-smile.

“Yeah, you. It’s that hair stuff you use. Flowery, but not too sweet. Warm, too.” He chuckles softly. “Kinda sexy somehow.”

And damnit, she can feel herself blushing now, but as his genuine smile widens, she can’t help but relax and smile too.

And as his eyes flutter open, all unguarded and bright with a sort of something neither of them yet knows how to name, Jordy brings her hand to his cheek, runs a tender thumb over his chin…and presses down on the shutter.

*shk*, click.

This time, he doesn’t flinch at all. This time, the rest of the world has already fallen away.
