“yeah.. you’re fucking welcome..” they muttered at the tall woman left without so much as a thank you. “asshole..” they added. jamie shook their head. they weren’t a people person.. but as far as their job went.. they were calm.. said their pleases and thank yous.. but when someone walked over them, they couldn’t stand it. seeing another customer, they rose an eyebrow. “sorry.. about that.. is there anything i can get you?” they asked, wiping the counter top with a cloth.

“I know Florida is known for its thunderstorms, but I’ll admit I never thought they could get this bad. This is probably the worst one I’ve seen since I moved here,” Natalie mused to the person sitting next to her, clutching her coffee cup in her hands to keep them warm against the cold rain. “I wish I had thought to bring my umbrella.”

The coffee shop was rather empty. Good for Jamie. They were getting paid to sit on their ass, drink caramel latte’s and scroll through their instagram with the drum of rain on the windows. Listening to her, they glanced up, watching her before looking outside. “It’s crazy alright.. Never thought it would be this bad..” They agreed.

Baseball cap tipped strategically to hide his face, Jack sat sprawled out over a striped beach towel, trying his best to relax. That was what he was here for, right? Clear his head, start fresh, come to peace with recent events. It was one of his first few days in Captiva, and so far he wasn’t doing too great with that objective. Sighing as his head clouded with thoughts, he grabbed the paperback book he’d brought along with him, hoping the distraction would put his mind at ease. Just as he was reading the first line of text, he froze up as he heard footsteps behind him. Did someone notice who he was? Was he about to be ambushed for an autograph? Hoping not, he decided it was better to just play it cool. No need for extra stress right now. “Hey, uh, nice day out today, huh?”

Jamie had to confess.. they hadn’t lived in America for very long.. even with it being their home ground.. they were forever moving. But he looked.. familiar. As they walked to work, their dark eyes tried to cop a sly glance at him. A proper glance. But watching him, Jamie gave a small nod, glancing around. “Beautiful.. it’s the nicest if seen in a while to be honest..” They nodded.

you know.. guys, i’m not gonna lie.. i’m sitting here listening to ‘if you’re over me’ by years and years.. and i was gonna make jamie this tiny little gentle bby. but that gif right there? don’t it fuck you up? introducing my bitter baristaaa.

from a young age.. the idea of being ‘the woman of the house’ was drilled into them. if anything was to happen to their father, jamie was to looked after their family.. it started out as this joke.. this quip to boost a young child’s confidence.. or so their father thoughts. but from a young age, it made them quite harsh.

so.. around their.. early teens.. they’ve been travelling across the world with their mother and father. they settled on a military base in europe. with other ‘military brats’ their age.. jamie found they could be themselves.. they didn’t have to be this tough person. and people really understood what it was like to continuously pick up and move on. 

when their father was called to active duty in afghanistan, jamie and their mother were moved back to america as it was too dangerous where he was going and protection would be limited. although a year later, two soldiers arrived at the door, announcing the death of jamie’s father.

around this time, jamie realised that they were gay and very much attracted to women.. but in the middle of it all.. jamie never told anybody and kept it hidden down inside them.

after that, jamie kind of pushed everybody else away.. refused to let anybody get close to their family bc ‘they were in charge now’.. even if people stopped to talk to their mother, jamie would usher her mother on away from them. jobs were landed on jamie.. to bring more money in, take care of her younger twin brothers.

but one day.. their mother asked one thing too many and jamie snapped, they threw their fist through the plywood wall and broke down. they couldn’t take the amount of responsibility anymore. after that, their mother insisted they take a break.. go on holiday.. or a working holiday for a year or so.

so jamie moved from washington to florida.. to captiva. they’d all of these things about soulmates and maybe.. jamie wanted it? they wanted someone who just wanted them and not.. something from them.

jamie is a bitter little thing bc they’ve still got this habit of pushing people away from them. but they’re trying to sort themselves out.
