From the 1940s till the 1970s, at several tourist attractions or important places you could find a so-called Voice-O-Graph. They’re more or less the same as the photo booths you can still find at airports and stations, only in the Voice-O-Graph, you could record your very own piece of sound on vinyl, for just a small amount of money. Could be anything. They were used WWII as a message for home, but beginning musicians also used them for cheap demos. Nowadays, only a couple of these booths are still in existence and one of them is located in Jack White’s own record store/recording studio in Nashville, Tennessee. He seems to be having it for quiet some time, but on Record Store Day he spontaneously decided to record a song in this mini-studio and the result is awesome. It sounds just like the music from the 40s and the early 50s and also the choice of music is pretty damn old. Jack White, what a hero!

“Mad Fad – Teenagers are now using voice-o-graph recordings for sending messages. The kids think these are practical for retaining as souvenirs… If the old saying is true, ‘write and fear no man, don’t write and fear no woman,’ then it seems this would be good advice in respect to making a verbal record of poems and teenage jive talk.”

Vinyl nerds will be astonished to discover that in the 1940s, there were vending machines where you could cut your own record on the spot! I wrote all about one that I checked out in Washington, DC: https://www.prosoundnetwork.com/pro-sound-news-blog/a-voice-o-graph-from-the-past
