Well, the news is out! I guess I need to work on that press release! The photo @joelsartore took of Pangolin Conservation's pangolins just got named one of the best photos of the decade by @natgeo ! We are extremely honored to be part of this, and while we had hints when we helped with some of the wording, we didn't know until RIGHT NOW it made the cut! We are very proud of the work we have done with helping to prevent extinction of pangolins worldwide. Our ex-situ breeding program is one of our huge accomplishments, where we "backed up" - just like you would a hard drive on your computer - White-bellied tree pangolins without zoological partners to prevent extinction of these animals. When we started we were told it was impossible, and just this year we have multiple facilities have pangolins give birth and expecting more any day now! Earlier this year in Nigeria, the founder of Pangolin Conservation, engaged in critical discussions with the head of the Traditional Healers Association in West Africa. Pangolin Conservation, and it’s partners, are working to increase engagement with all stakeholders. Often times the conservation community thinks that the goals between traditional medicine practitioners and their own are different. They are not. They just have different reasons to support the outcome. After discussions, we both came away with the same goal, to ensure pangolins are there for future generations. They agreed to no longer support the use of Pangolin products in their traditional medicine, and to use sustainable substitutes. They felt that if they continued to use pangolins, they would be partially responsible for the extinction of pangolins. A thought they could not stomach. They want pangolins in West Africa for their children. This was very important to them. That’s what conservation is, finding common ground on what everyone feels is important.
