Submissions: Reality Level Exercise #2 - Zoom In
Submissions will be open from 12 PM Saturday 04/27 - 12 PM Friday 05/02.
Quick reminders before we get into the prompt itself:
Please consider whether you would like to publish your exercise through a journal as a short story before submitting. Many journals prefer to have first publishing rights. Even though this is a very informal workshop environment I would hate to impact your chances of getting your work in a journal just because I read the piece on stream.
Even if you don’t follow the guidelines exactly, please don’t be turned off from submitting! I’m of the belief that pushing guidelines to follow the vision of what you’re creating is to be celebrated in writing. I will make it as clear as possible within a prompt whether certain guidelines are hard or soft.
All submissions must be in PDF format.
While I support writing in whatever font works best for you, I do ask that you choose a reader-friendly font to finish and do not use handwriting style fonts for the main text of your piece. Small passages of alternate fonts to distinguish them are acceptable, and they can be harder to read so long as that is an intentional function of the alternate font.
Please have fun!
Prompt: Zoom In. Start on a very wide view from the action of the scene and slowly zoom into it as closely as you can.
A brief and extremely condensed overview of what I’m looking for:
If the scene is a private conversation between two characters in a tavern.
I would start with prose about the country/nation/region my hypothetical scene takes place in. Then settle into a description of the specific city/town and a few landmarks within it. Meander down a few streets, lanes, alleys, until I reach the tavern. Walk through the tavern, talk about the bartender, the regulars at the bar, the soup bubbling for weary travelers, before finally overhearing a whisper from the scene I’ve been zooming into.
Inch closer, describe the characters and the mood of the conversation. What are they talking about? Zoom in closer to them, until I’m in a bubble with just these two characters and nothing else matters. If I felt like it, I might slowly transition the POV from the distant one I started with to only cover one of these characters and their interior perspective to get even closer.
Guidelines
No guidelines this time! Just a small request to keep it under 5,000 words. That's a pretty high word count cap, so go wild!
Optional challenges
Just how far out can you start out? How closely can you zoom in? Push either or both end to the limit to really challenge yourself!
Submit your exercise here!

"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.
It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).
Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.
One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.
*Yes, this is a blog post, but it's a blog post filled with links to news articles. If you can click one link, you can click another.

they should invent a way to self destruct that doesn't have any permanent consequences. a way to crash your car in a fiery wreck and walk away unharmed. a way to tear your organs out of your chest and be whole again by the morning like prometheus. a cigarette that burns your lungs but not your lifespan.

Long ago, there were a group of wild cats. All were abandoned by their twolegs and were without a home. When a lone spirit approached them, telling them of a glorious life of hunting, of battles, of kinship, they all sought out what was called the Wild Lands.
Soon enough, they all came to a beautiful territory, nestled close to a mountain and a lake. It was teeming with prey, herbs, and shelter. However, issues began to rise over who would lead these cats, to keep them safe and orderly.

Basically, I made the grave mistake of mentioning to my coworkers that I preferred the idea of taking courses that didn't cost much and they were aghast because if someone is publishing a course or a class and is charging less than $2,000 for it, they're basically telling people it doesn't have any value or worth.
Which I just, uh, don't agree with? But I don't know. Then I was curious whether I was in the minority here or if it was a case of 'my coworkers have really weird and bad takes'.
