The Mysterious Symbols of the Victorian Era with Guest Speaker, Jessica Roux, Author / Illustrator of Floriography, An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers Join us online Saturday, March 20 @ 11am - 12:30pm CST
Join Light Grey Art Lab instructors Lindsay Nohl & Jenny Wells and guest speaker Jessica Roux, Author / Illustrator of Floriography, An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers, for an insightful workshop that wanders through the Victorian Era’s mysterious, romantic, ornamental, and symbolic icons.
The Mysterious Symbols of the Victorian Era The Victorian Era inspires thoughts of dark fabrics, top hats, corsets , and bustles, strict codes of courtship and romance, of arsenic-laced wallpapers with ornate patterns, of days when mediumship and alternative forms of spirituality spurred some of the most intriguing esoteric communities and how death was memorialized in photos, memento-mori, and monuments to the lost. And amongst all of these aspects of living, a language of symbols pervaded every aspect of life – from love to loss, hope to despair. In this course, we will cover some of our favorite Victorian symbols and their connection to the time, and speak with author/illustrator Jessica Roux about the stories behind her new book, Floriography, An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian Language of Flowers.
Want to attend with a friend? Now there is a friend pack discount on the shop :)

Join us tomorrow morning for a special guest lecture with artist Teagan White teaganwhite.com (last registration 3/13 at 10am CST)
Teagan White is an artist and outsider naturalist devoted to the flora and fauna of a planet in decline. Their delicate gouache and watercolor paintings and intricate line drawings lament the fraught relationship between humans and the rest of the Earth, and explore the tenderness and brutality that coexist in all of Nature.
Teagan’s work is influenced by years of living in the bleak Midwest and Great Lakes region, burying roadkill, traveling by bike, and working with wildlife. They recently relocated to the Pacific Northwest, where savage coasts lined with dead seabirds and mossy old growth forests are creeping into their paintings.
The workshop is about the connection between one’s muse, and the eternal quest for connection to our creative inspirations in authentic, inspiring, and respectful ways. We hope to see you online :)

WOW! We decided to create an impromptu Halloween Special Tarot Class in honor of the BLUE MOON happening this October 31st! Join us at 1pm CST!
REGISTER FOR THE CLASS HERE! GROWTH * POWER * WISDOM! This is a virtual workshop open to beginners and practiced mystics alike! The moon is a powerful ally – not only is it a window into our subconscious, but it’s a symbol of the cycles of life, the hidden realms beyond our visible world, and a symbol of the divine feminine. This workshop explores the meaning and power of the moon and our ability to connect with its presence and power in our own lives. We will be exploring setting intentions with Tarot cards, learning a simple, but effective spell / one-card manifestation exercise, and getting together to explore the most progressive and positive cards in the Tarot deck together and their relationship to the moon. You do not need to prepare anything - in fact, this is also an opportunity to get to know the topic and others that share your interests! This is one of a series of upcoming Young Mystics workshops where we will be investigating personal power through the use of Tarot and Mysticism. This class is taught by Light Grey Founder, Lindsay Nohl @paperbicycle and co-hosted by gallery manager, Jenny Wells @jennywellsstudio and will be a combination of lecture and interactive personal study! You’ll need a notebook, deck (if you have one) and something to write with :)
This workshop is virtual and open to all (Beginners and practiced folks ALL WELCOME!) We are hosting on discord, so if you are interested in signing up, head to the link in our b*o to RSVP! There are a handful of student / need-based discount tickets as well as some “bring-a-virtual-friend” packs, so head on over to check it out and hope you can join us!

Meet Dominique Ramsey dominiqueramsey.com / instagram.com/euqinimodart Dominique Ramsey is an illustrator from Atlanta, GA who has a passion for telling stories about animals, nature, and the whimsical-mysteries things in life. Her inspiration comes from animation, video games, music, and children’s books that have an animal focus including the Warrior Cats book series and the Pokemon game franchise. Her inspiration also comes from animals themselves, the spiritual connection they have, the relationship between animals and people, and what various animals mean to different cultures. Dominique strives for uniqueness; using bright colors, bold lines, shapes, and patterns that can excite and capture the viewer's eye. Her work focuses heavily on symbolism, where she explores themes such as mystery, culture, identity, and the subconscious mind.
Meet Kyros Barton kyros-barton.com / instagram.com/barton.avi Kyros Barton is an interdisciplinary artist currently working out of Cincinnati. Following a lifelong interest in the arts, mythology, and learning, his work focuses on the development of a self and the different forms of acceptance associated with his internal growth. Elements of the contemporary, his transgender identity, and the black experience pepper the work he produces. Keeping in tune with his motivation to constantly evolve his practice via education and experience, he is focusing on how his personal identity is being affected by living through a major historical event. His goal is to chronologize his own personal mythology, inspired by artists such as Catherine Graffam, James Joyce, and Shaun Leonardo, Greek and Roman mythology, and the study of Joseph Campbell’s theories.
Meet Shuman Lu instagram.com/shumans_illustration Shuman is an illustrator from Taiwan. She loves drawing, storytelling, and expressing daily life through her drawings. She has experience in illustrating for children’s books and zines, and loves printmaking, making collages.
Meet Donte D'Amico dontedamico.com / instagram.com/donte.damico Donte is a Philadelphia based illustrator who loves plants, tea, and food. He loves using texture and vibrant colors in his work, just as much as he loves using explosions of that texture and color to create movement and patterning. He is interested in editorial work, surface design, and packaging.
Meet Mary Flora Hart maryflorahart.co.uk / instagram.com/maryflorahart Mary is a UK based digital illustrator originally from north London. She enjoys creating immersive scenes bursting with unexpected details, whether that be reportage illustrations or imaginary worlds. Alongside illustration, Mary is passionate about music, particularly within the genres of hip-hop and RnB. She loves immersing herself within the culture and my work often signifies this. She also has a keen interest in traveling and tackling feminist and environmental issues.

^^^^over 60 sponsors, 5k in awards, tons of great sponsorships, scholarships, in-kind donations and more!
Connections, above all, have been such an important part of the LGAL mission, including fostering an atmosphere where emerging artists connect with established folks, opportunities to learn and grow, and giving a financial boost to those in need. Individuals looking to sponsor a new grad can choose their level of support by contributing time, monetary scholarships, one-on-one conversations, or providing gifts to encourage or coach a person at the beginning of their creative journey.
Through small actions and inspiration, we know that each of us can have a greater individual impact on the world around us. The connections between sponsors and grads remains at the top of our mission and we hope to foster meaningful relationships within the global community, and expand the web of support we know already exists in the greater creative landscape.
