The american obsession with and hysterical fear over (especially female) nudity but deep love of good old wholesome gory death has resulted in, since the late 70s OP mentioned, movies becoming more and more violent for younger and younger children that now, there's more gun violence in PG-13 movies than R Rated movies.

Violence and death is literally considered something child-friendly to us. Something you give more of to children than adults. We've completely gotten things twisted.

Comedians in the '70s and cartoons in the '90s: weird how your kids can watch violence and murder on TV but the FCC wants us dead if we say the word nipple.
