when worldbuilding any pre-modern or ceremony-focused society it is EXTREMELY important to design the stupidest most impractical hat you can possibly imagine and assign it great cultural significance
#i think panicked substitutions for silly hats also have a lot of real world justification#my (jw) granny once was the only person who could give a prayer for a meal at a family gathering and she couldn't find a head covering so#she freaked out and swept all the food off a paper plate and then put it on her head#there's also a fundamentalist woman I've seen who works at a tire shop where (if her head covering gets caught) she'll grab someone else's#bandanna or (unfortunately) a rag until she can retrieve it. we all know other examples of similar things im sure but we can also#extrapolate it to the topic at hand (oh no my Fancy Cone for Space Jesus!! oh god!! i need to make a quick sub until i find it!!)
