Mecha AU Vortex by @keferon I had the idea that after a certain amount of time they get sick of cleaning the interior of this guys skull and they end up just flooding it with solvent overnight to cleanse everything - This also conveniently has the benefit of not giving him the chance to bite down on anyone

Humanformers time! I have all of their designs with the jumpsuits done (thought it’d be cute if they had a matching uniform, even though I headcanon that in this universe, Ratchet and Pharma do their best not to wear it whenever possible). Not the happiest with Pharma’s but I can always come back to it.

Design breakdowns & my thoughts for each character below the cut. 🫶

Ratchet

Ratchet doesn’t like to wear her combat medic uniform- she prefers her simple lab coat and slacks. The additional armored plating makes everything feel too real and she’d rather not confront the big emotions she has with the war and what that means as a doctor and CMO.

The armored chest plate is blue to mimic Ratchet’s windshield plating that some iterations of his root mode have, and there are some ECG motifs as a reference to TFP Ratchet. I like Ratchet being more red, but I kept her hair orange as a reference to TFP and IDW.

First Aid

My favorite design of the 4. Unlike Ratchet, First Aid prefers to wear the jumpsuit because it’s comfortable and practical, and has her own unique jacket she often wears over top.

First Aid’s mask translates really well to a human healthcare worker, and instead of giving her a helmet that’s an exact replica of First Aid’s helm, I gave her a hat and had her hair in buns that mimic the way it frames her face.

This version of First Aid sort of reminds me of an EMT. She isn’t one, but I took inspiration from EMT and first responder uniforms with her in general, due to how quick on her feet she’d have to be working directly under Ratchet and the chaos that ensues in the medbay.

Ambulon

I’m not sure how well I achieved it, but I wanted her jumpsuit to look ill-fitting and slightly worn compared to the others which fit them more tightly. The cuffs of the pants are too wide and the scalloped collar flares more than it should. The jumpsuit wasn’t always hers, after all. There are elements of Ambulon’s paint scratches, from the scuffs on her boots to the purple turtleneck she wears underneath.

She has a chevron she wears as well, but I accidentally made her bangs way too cute and so I wanted to showcase both. Her hair isn’t naturally blonde- all part of her trying to fly under the radar and try not to be recognized for her former alliances.

Pharma

This design killed me. I might come back to it but I knew that my humanformer Pharma wouldn’t wear this jumpsuit if she could help it, just like Ratchet.

Gave her white hair and a red chevron in reverse of Pharma’s normal colors because it made her unique compared to the other medics.

Long coat covering the jumpsuit because she thinks it’s ugly.

She’s a very classy individual, and I wanted to have each unique element she added to the medic uniform represent that.

Usually when members from the og lineup are not put/replaced in the group is because of trademark reasons and what tends to happen is that they bring in new/preexisting trademarks for that character. But the thing is is that the character being replaced won’t really exist in that continuity in the first place so I wouldn’t really consider that as them switching the line up?.? Unless of course it’s stated or shown as so. Maybe that’s where you’re getting confused?

Like the stunticons in the 2015 RID cartoon the team consists of the original members motormaster and dragstrip but characters Heatseeker, Wildbreak, and Slashmark were brought in. Although breakdown existed in the aligned continuity it wasn’t as if he was a combiner at all. Which is another thing. Say dead end is replaced in his gestalt, both him and his replacement can both exist but dead end himself probably isn’t a combiner/stunticon. Though this only really happens if there are trademark issues and combiners don’t really show up much as a whole. And when they do it’s more or less going to be the original lineup.

Or it could be like rook where they add more members at random. Because rook existed as a whatever character before hasbro or whoever was in charge wanted more protectobots and it more just stuck. Unlike the g1 combiner lineups where they’re made to be combiners, the additional/different members are probably more like hasbro needing to use their trademarks of obscure characters and slapping them into gestalts. So yeah rook is an additional member but it’s like getting a new student in a class where you’ve known everybody since elementary.hes like a reallly new addition.

With Combiners... how many of them actually CANONICALLY end up with an Amica or Conjunx?????

Like??????? PLEASE Transformers fandom, people with the combiner wisdom, are combiners actually engaging in relationships outside the gestalt and if they ARE what kind of combiners are they? (example: scramble style where a bunch of randos can swap in at any time or closed like Bruticus where they're locked in with those 5 etc)

To be frank all the combiner gestalts are all kinda losers(affectionate). I don’t think any of the main combiners get conjunxed or amicaed if I remember correctly. Obviously the devestator/prowl thing happened but as far as I know nothing like conjunxing or amica stuff happen there. In g1 they were on like friendlyish terms with grapple and hoist..? They were also friends with Omega supreme before the war. Anyways the construction ended up betraying both of them at the end of their episodes and it isn’t mentioned again in classic g1 fashion.

Blast off and Cosmos had a valentines special comic but it’s only like 4 pages. It’s implied that they have somewhat of a relationship (whether romantic or platonic). I remember one issue (fate of Cybertron) where Blast off runs off(?) to Cosmos because he was near or landed on the same planet. Like they literally walk off into the sunset basically.

Im 99% sure they’re holding hands but who am I to say anything. Also Blast Off had a crush on Onslaught in till all are one. Just wanted to point that out there.

For the stunticons it’s really only breakdown and Deadend I’d say. Obviously knockout/breakdown went on but their relationship more fanon more than anything. Same goes for breakdown/bbb, Deadend/perceptor, and Deadend/astrotrain. ACTUALLY I totally forgot that breakdown and knockout get conjunxed/are conjunxs but unfortunately the comics don’t show much of their relationship. And im not sure if breakdown is even a combiner in that continuity/comic.

The Protectobots combined with a dead ambulon due to rook dying if that answers your question of combiners swapping out with strangers. The whole swapping thing is more of the toys function than anything in the comics/shows.

The Aerialbots brought in Bravo something I forgot his name but he was meant to replace Slingshot I think. The aerialbots have the most “swapping” element from what I can tell from canon.

Most if not all gestalts stay with the same members. Canon doesn’t really like combiners unfortunately (there are many disadvantages to being a combiners fan I’m afraid). If anything you’d probably be more successful pulling from fanon than canon for combiner experiences(?). The aspects of what it’s like to be a combiner basically. I probably read fanon stuff that does expand on the complexity of combiners but my brain hasn’t decided to pop it out yet.

Once again, I am plagued by combiner thoughts. And I know I'm going to get to it in that one fic, but I just want to ramble about Texaid for a minute and why it compels me

I just think there's something so interesting going on with the parallels between G1 Vortex and First Aid. They're both combiners. They're both the left hand in their combiner form. The mirror is there folks.

But Vortex is solidly connected to his gestalt. The Combaticons are always together. They're not having some other rando come in. They know exactly who they need to be in that unit. Even though they don't understand the world around them, they know who they are to each other.

Meanwhile, the Protectobots are scramble city style. Like, their configuration will change randomly (G1 Transformers, my beloved chaos continuity destroyer) and in later versions they'll even get random mechs joining and cycling through. The gestalt feels like coworkers at a job???

I just think it's so interesting, that the Combaticons have 1 thing that they are solid on and that is their reliance on each other. They get thrown through the ringer in many continuities (remember that time... megatron put a bomb in Swindle's HEAD in the G1 cartoons?? yeah??? no??? just me???). And I think that is such a HUGE draw to why folks love them as a combiner gestalt, while not many people are talking about the Protectobots.

But how juicy is it - that the autobot is the one who is left out on his own, just a cog to be placed in a situational weapon. While the Combaticons fight for revenge so OFTEN because they're looking out for the mechs that matter so much to them. And that's the real heart of Bruticus.
