Paradise Lies
40 posts
Stories, legends and myths. They are passed down from person to person, fading in and out of time as they are changed and forgotten. Each one is unique, and all are kept alive simply by telling them to each generation that comes along. Stories bring us together, and perhaps there is a reason for that.

“You’re never too old to be young.”
Name: Snow Whitaker Age: 35 Job: Detective FC: Ruth Negga Status: Open Original Story: Snow White
Once upon a Snow Whitaker
Once upon a time, there was a queen. She refused to take a husband and let him rule, and she was only given lenience because she was a well-loved queen. Nobody caught her eye until she fell for a foreigner. Their relationship was in secret, knowing she could never marry a stranger to her kingdom in public. Yet he was still discovered and banished, and she was made to marry a nobleman. She was found to be with child early, and everyone thought things were well. But the child came, and her skin was dark, like the man the queen had been with before. Her mother was executed for sleeping with a man that was not her husband, not even of their country, and her last act of defiance was to name her newborn daughter Snow White. Her stepfather reduced her status to that of a servant, and Snow spent her days working, telling herself the story of her parents each night before she slept.
Her stepfather remarried a beautiful, vain woman. The woman was taken with Snow White though, and made the child her personal maid. She didn’t notice Snow blossoming into a beautiful young woman. Not until she consulted her magic mirror and discovered that Snow would one day become more beautiful than her. The queen sent a Huntsman to take the child into the forest and get rid of her. He made it to the dark forest with her, but lost her when a wolf attacked. He narrowly managed to kill the beast, and took its heart to the queen instead. He was certain Snow would be killed instantly in the dark forest anyway. Snow White ran as far as she could, passing unharmed by any dangerous animals until she reached a small hut on the far side. The place was set up as though it was for children, but she fell into one of the beds and slept before she could question it.
The children that woke her recognized her instantly. They had been her mother’s most trusted warriors, banished and cursed when her mother died to be small like dwarves and childlike in appearance. They vowed to protect her from the queen that they knew would try again to kill her. And as they expected, the Huntsman came again, with more men. Only the Huntsman was sent back after the fight that followed, with instructions to tell the queen that she would have to send an army to get to Snow White. Years passed of silence, and it wasn’t until the King passed and left the kingdom to the queen that the suggestion took hold. They caught word of an army marching through the dark forest and sent Snow White to the mountains to seek refuge in another kingdom.
Snow followed a road up a mountain, each night finding wolves following her from the trees. They never harmed her, and when nights grew cold, they gathered around her to keep her warm. Any animals nearby seemed to do what they could to help her. She’d heard tales of such people before, from far off lands. Witches. It had to come from her father’s side, and she had nobody to tell her about it. She could only keep going, hoping to find a better place. Traveling, she fell in with a group of merchants. They were enchanted by her, though they were a mysterious group. But she began to spend time with a young man, slowly falling for the poor merchant. For once, things seemed to be going well.
They had almost reached their destination when they picked up an old woman. She had fruit for sale, and claimed she was so taken with Snow’s beauty, that she gave her one of her prized apples. Snow ate the fruit and fell dead. Lives fell away in darkness, most often being an outcast in a strange land. The cycle repeated itself, and while people always found her beautiful, she always had the feeling there was something or someone specifically out there for her. The day she saw Florian, it all came flooding back. Problem was, she saw him on a missing persons report that came across her desk. Even when everyone else gave up on the case, she worked it on her off hours until she finally found him, two years later. He was alive, against most expectations, held hostage by a gang that rivaled his own. As soon as he saw her, he remembered her as well.
He needed a fresh start and she was always up for change, so they moved to Paradise together. It was quiet and well out of the way, the sort of place that his past wouldn’t catch up to him and they could finally get to know each other. Now that he’s finally proposed, she’s in the middle of balancing work and planning a wedding, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.
Possible Connections
Florian Drave - Her fiance
Anna Wynn - Coworker
Hades Kronos - She knows he’s involved in bad business, she just hasn’t caught him

“For glory, God and gold and the Virginia Company.”
Name: John Ratcliffe Age: Immortal Job: Mayor FC: James McAvoy Status: Open Original Story: Pocahontas
Once upon a John Ratcliffe
The tale of John Ratcliffe has been grossly twisted and over-exaggerated over the years. As a young man, his life was a simple one. He came from a humble start, but he wanted to be more than a simple farmer. He joined the royal navy, trying to find a purpose for himself. He was a good, sturdy worker who followed the rules steadfastly, and was told that his biggest flaw was being too generous with his fellow workers. He didn’t have any intentions of ever marrying until he met Mary. She lived in one of the port towns he stopped at, and he was head over heels at once. They got married while he was still there, and he left a week later, not returning for another five months. He found her well on her way to having a child, but he still couldn’t stay. He returned in another five months to find his son being cared for by Mary’s poor family, finding that she had passed during childbirth.
John was devastated. He thought it would be best for his son if he wasn’t around much, just sending money to the family. His son was two years old when he was made captain and the Crown asked him to travel to the new world to help at the colony there. John knew it would be a long trip, if he ever did come back. He chose to take his son with him. He traveled to the new world, commanding the Discovery, the smallest of three ships sent to the colony. Once there, he worked side by side with an explorer named John Smith to remove Edward Wingfield from the presidency because he was hiding food for himself that the colony needed. Ratcliffe was elected president and asked Smith to organise work details and expeditions to trade with Native Americans.
Being Governor wasn’t nearly as easy as it seemed. The people blamed him for not having enough food, Smith accused him of being overly generous when trading with the Native’s and the Crown put pressure on him to expand the colony. He was forced to begin building a capitol for the colony, which the colonists dubbed ‘Ratcliffe’s Palace’. He lost their faith, and they accused even him of hoarding their rations. Fed up, Ratcliffe resigned from office two months before his term was up. He left it to Smith and made plans to return to England with his son. Before he left, him and fourteen others were invited to a gathering with a nearby tribe. They were promised corn for their trip, but the meeting was an ambush.
The other colonists and his son were killed, but Ratcliffe was somehow held accountable for what his people had done to their land. He didn’t know what was happening as the medicine woman chanted around him, but he got the idea that it was a powerful spell, no matter if he had never believed in such things. He was buried alive after, and passed centuries in utter silence and blackness. He waited for death to come, but it never did. The next time he saw light, he was being dug up by a construction crew who were more terrified than him to find a man alive, buried twenty feet below the surface. Adapting to the new world that had apparently grown into it’s own was not an easy process. Learning what had happened to the world while he was buried was even more difficult, though less so when he found Mary.
She had been reincarnated and for some reason, she remembered him. This time they actually got a chance to be married and John determined not to leave her side again. But she didn’t make it through her pregnancy in this life, either. Ratcliffe did at least have his son again, but his wife had passed and he didn’t know what to do with himself. Involved in some politics, he received an offer to run for office in Paradise. He had nothing else to do, so he accepted and as nobody else was running, he became the mayor. Two years in the same place, he begun to heal from the loss of his wife, but he’s still a very private man.
Possible Connections
Yzma Manco - They often bring up concerns about how the city is run
James Hook - He recognizes the man from when he was a captain, warned about pirates
Pocahontas Matatiske - She was one of the Native’s when he was in the colony, but he hasn’t told her

“I suppose it is like the ticking of the crocodile, isn’t it? Time is chasing after all of us.”
Name: Felicity Manawa Age: Immortal Job: Zookeeper FC: Kirsten Stewart Status: Open Original Story: Peter Pan
Once upon a Felicity Manawa
Felicity has gone by many names. Wani, a great sea monster known to wreck ships and devour people whole. Sobek, an ancient god personifying divine reason. She has been considered a servant of the Underworld, a house for the spirits of ancestors, an evil spirit or a sacred animal. She guards close to her the answer of which of those might be true. She can take the form of a human woman, a crocodile, or a tiger, though her preferred form is that of a crocodile. For the most part she avoids humans, or interactions with any sentient living beings. Her life is a private one, full of secrets and a past that’s fuzzy to even her, having lived so long.
Neverland was a safe haven to her. The mermaids on the western end of the island were terrified of her, and the pixies always let her be, keeping to themselves above water. Even on the rare occasion that she took to land, they chose not to interact with her in any form. It was a peaceful place, until Captain Hook. He brought people to her home. First a group of rowdy boys that thought they could hunt her, then a people that assumed her dangerous. As if that wasn’t enough, Hook’s fights with the boys muddied her waters and spilled blood through the crystalline water that had once been free of any human tarnish.
For that, she snapped up his hand with his watch, keeping him from ever retrieving it. She wove spells of irrational fear over him, so that every time he heard the ticking of his watch that she wore around her neck, an indescribable fear would come over him. He handled it with more decorum than she might have expected, and she got the idea that he knew exactly what she was when he looked at her. He was the first human to see anything beyond a crocodile when he looked at her, and it intrigued her to a certain extent.
Felicity took to land to hear tales of thee mysterious captain and found that humans were far more befuddled by his existence than her. He was mortal yet he did not age, his legacy refused to fade into myth like it ought. She began to travel back and forth between the human world and Neverland, until Neverland’s magic began to fail and she took more and more to the mortal world. There have been occasions when she’s seen James Hook looking at her as though he knows what she is, but he never asks, and she never bothers to tell.
Possible Connections
James Hook - She’s been trying to figure him out for a while now
Taylor Bell - Probably the only person that actually knows what she is
Eric Canter - She often meets him when he’s caring for the animals at the zoo

do you need any help writing bios?
I do admit, I’m a little bit anal when it comes to bios (even Admin Blue gets annoyed with me sometimes), and I have a specific feel I’m trying to get for this rp. That being said, if you feel you have some ideas for characters you think would fit here, you’re welcome to come off anon and discuss it, and if we can get a writing sample from you first, we might have you write a few bios.

“The tragedy of life is not death but what we let die inside of us while we live.”
Name: Tiger Lilium Age: 20 Job: Student FC: Kawennahere Devery Jacobs Status: Open Original Story: Peter Pan
Once upon a Tiger Lilium
Most of Tiger Lily’s people don’t remember the land they came from. They were born into slavery, into a life of work and then dying, without much in between. She didn’t have parents that she ever knew of, or she was taken from them when she was too young to remember them. Her name was given to her by the people that owned her, who named her for a flower. To her, it merely proved how she was seen; as a decoration. Yet it gave her a slightly better life than her peers. She was given more comforts as a child, told that when she came of age, she would be sold again and make them plenty of money with her beauty.
She was taken with a group of others on ship to a major trade port when she was fourteen. They had plans to sell her off, and she had grown far too numb to fight. Only hold her head high and do her best to pretend that nothing anyone did could have any effect on her. She was told that she was less than the people that owned her, and as her only form of rebellion, she refused to believe it. She refused to act like it.
The ship never made it to harbor. They were attacked by pirates, and Tiger Lily expected a far worse fate than anything she would meet once she was sold. Yet the captain of the ship didn’t match the stories told of him. Captain Hook was not a cruel man, though his anger when he found her and the others was a formidable thing indeed. He sunk the merchants ship and offered them no chance to become his crew. He did offer places in his crew to any of her people that wished to join him, and the rest of them he took to a safe haven. A place called Neverland, where pixie’s kept them young. A place where they were free, for the first time.
It took them some time to adjust to a lift of not following orders. But they learned the land and they learned how to hunt and grow food. They learned games with the Lost Boys that were on the island. But Tiger Lily still wanted something more. She wanted a normal life, and she wanted an excuse to be around the Captain more. She asked if he would take her to the mainland the next time he went, and he went back and forth many times before he agreed. He brought her back to the land she’d been born in, but everything was different. She had to adapt and learn to live in a world that was far ahead of her times. The Captain always took care of her, gave her anything she needed and provided her with money, but nothing more. Eventually she aged and her life fell away into the next one.
It was like waking up from a dream that she knew she ought to remember, but she couldn’t. At least, not until the Captain found her. He was surprised to see her, and she didn’t recognize him at first. When he discovered she was an orphan, he brought her to Paradise and paid for her schooling and a place to live. Slowly now, she’s beginning to regain the memories of her past life, most of them centered around the Captain that’s always taken such good care of her.
Possible Connections
James Hook - She has a bit of a crush on him
John Ratcliffe - He’s one of her professors
Peter Pan - She feels as though she ought to remember him

             “It’s called cruel irony.”
Name: Yzma Manco Age: 35 Job: Project Manager FC: Morena Baccarin Status: Open Original Story: The Emperor’s New Groove
Once upon an Yzma Manco
Yzma’s first life was a long one. Born a female, they were assured to inherit nothing. They didn’t understand why a supposed gender carried so much weight in the world, what made them less capable of ruling than a boy. But they raised their brother anyway, ruling while he was still too young to take the throne. They enjoyed it, too. It seemed to have been made for them, with all the puzzles and challenges of keeping people happy. Watching Kuzco grow up, they knew that he would make a poor ruler. He was too impetuous, too self-centered. He thought becoming emperor meant that the world would revolved around him and he would get everything he wanted. They knew better than that.
They were the current empress, and they couldn’t even change anything in order to claim their birthright. When Kuzco did take over, they were pushed aside to a mere counsel position. Kuzco never even listened to them, anyway. They lost patience, lost care for their civilization, even. He was going to ruin it all anyway. It wasn’t until he announced his plans for ‘Kuzcotopia’ that they realized they needed to do something. They spoke to him about it, and he replied by telling them that they were removed from their position, too ‘old’ and ‘feminine’ to understand. Something inside them snapped. It didn’t matter that he was their younger brother, he had to be stopped and they were the only one to do it. They had Kronk put on a dinner and tried to poison Kuzco’s food. It only succeeded in turning him into a llama, so they sent Kronk to take care of it. Everything seemed to be going well, they took the throne because nobody else was able to oppose them and anyone that said a woman couldn’t rule was disposed of quietly.
But Kuzco came back. They tried to stop him, but the peasant with him helped him. They knew it was Kronk’s fault for not doing his job right, so they tried to do it themself. Somehow it ended with them as a cat and Kuzco back in power. The only good thing about being a cat was how little notice people paid to them. They were able to get their revenge on Kuzco eventually, though there was nobody to tell of their success. Because of them, the Incan civilization began to crumble without a proper ruler. They lived longer than they liked after that, then lived eight more lives as a cat. Finally reborn as a human, they were determined to make this life different. To actually make a difference in the world. Of course Kuzco came along again, and they had to watch for him again. He was capable of ruining everything.
In their most recent life, they were determined to get away from their father and brother. The two of them were insensitive and wasteful and Yzma wanted to do something worthwhile in the world. They left home at nineteen and hitchhiked as far as they could, learning from everything they could. Eventually, they got involved in a green organization that worked on real problems. Working full time there, they went to school part time and finally got their degree in management and planning. Now they work on charity functions and protests, or whatever else they can to raise awareness. Recycling, global warming, illegal logging, all of it is important to them to raise awareness. They settled in Paradise since it’s one of the greenest places they’ve seen so far and they’ve loved it. At least, until they saw their younger brother ended up in town.
Possible Connections
Kuzco Manco - Their younger brother
Maleficent Dun - They consider them a like-minded person
Kronk Huaca - Their assistant

“Let me guess, you have a great personality?”
Name: Kuzco Manco Age: 21 Job: Busboy at Ship Happens FC: Jake T. Austin Status: Open Original Story: The Emperor’s New Groove
Once upon a Kuzco Manco
With every life he’s lived, Kuzco has been born into luxury. He started off with a bang, living as an emperor and having every desire that came into his head filled. He never knew his parents, leaving his older sibling, Yzma to practically raise him, serving as empress in his place until he came of age. When he did come of age, he took over with gusto. The world he lived in revolved around him and he was very happy with it staying that way. Things always went his way, until they didn’t. Of all the things, he was somehow turned into a llama and found himself miles away from his home. He did manage to enlist the help of peasant in getting home, though the man seemed oddly peeved about Kuzco’s plans to build his summer home on top of Pacha’s village.
Still, he assumed that if he could just get home he could change himself back and get everything back to the way it had been. That was, unfortunately, not the case. As he discovered that Yzma had been behind all of it, he nearly lost hope, not knowing what to think of his sibling. Sure, he had removed them from his counsel, but he didn’t think they were that petty. Pacha was the one to still get him home, and through trials and fights, got him back to a human. Things all fell into place once more, until Kuzco didn’t wake up one morning. Yzma had gotten their revenge, and this time what they had gotten slipped into his drink was real poison.
He knew nothing of the life before in his next one. He was still wealthy though, and again in the next life. Currently, he is the son of a wealthy politician. Once again, he grew up with everything handed to him, practically royalty. He was told he was talented and special, and while his father actually lived in this life, he was still raised by a troupe of different nannies through the years. Yzma occasionally watched him, still his older sibling, but they left when he was only six. He went to boarding school when he was old enough, and even managed to graduate a year early. But he dropped out of college during his first year, deciding he wanted to travel Europe and pursue a not-so-promising career in art. He enjoyed playing the part of a starving artist, while always having his father’s credit card to fall back on.
Then it wasn’t there anymore. His father was put in jail for embezzling money and the man in charge of all his father’s accounts, cleared out the contents of any accounts that weren’t frozen and fled the country. Kuzco had the jet stopped in Paradise for the night when he found out and when the jet was repossessed, leaving him with nothing. He was in trouble, with no money, no real skills, and no friends that were willing to stick around him in a true crisis. His art had never made any real money, and no high-scale places would hire him with his father’s reputation. He was reduced to bussing tables at a grimy bar, making less money in an entire day than he was used to spending on breakfast.
But it is a job, and maybe eventually he’ll have enough saved up for his father’s bail money. Or at least to get off the god-awful little island he’s found himself stuck on, sleeping in the guest room of a man that found him his first night there. He doesn’t enjoy staying with Pacha’s crowded family, but it is at least better than sleeping on the streets.
Possible Connections
Yzma Manco - His older sibling
Pacha Amaru - The man who’s house he’s currently living in
Hercules Sanna - Kuzco reads every update on their blog and has been a fan for a while

“I’m a master of fright, and a demon of light.”
Name: Jack Calavera Age: Immortal Job: Funeral Home Director FC: Diego Luna Status: Open Original Story: Nightmare Before Christmas
Once upon a Jack Calavera
Jack was born into war. His parents lived, but in the chaos he didn’t survive the day. Sent into the land of the remembered with his previous family forgotten and his living family in threat of death, sending them all to the land of the forgotten. La Muerte found him, just a babe, and took him in. She called him her son, gave him part of her power to keep him with her. Ever in competition with his wife, Xibalba claimed Jack as his own as well, giving a portion of his powers to the child. So Jack grew up under parents who fought over everything. He spent his summers in the land of the remembered with his mother and his winters passed in the land of the forgotten with his father.
As a child he learned to manipulate his parents. They loved to make bets, and he would goad them into bets that had him coming out the better for it. It was his best form of entertainment, on the long days living in a place that was never really his. The two realms belonged to his parents, and the land of the living was no place for him. He had no place of his own, and eventually his mother saw his dissatisfaction with his place.
She sent him away. To a place called Halloweentown, a diluted and Americanized version of the day of the dead. His heritage allowed him to rule easily, overthrowing the tyrant that had been Oogie Boogie. Jack had a purpose, a place that was his for once. He came to adore his Halloween, even if it did, eventually, lose it’s charm. It was the same thing year in and year out, and at times it was too easy. It became a routine that lost it’s charm, and he could not go home to his mother to tell her what she gave him wasn’t enough. He searched on his own to find what was missing. So he found Christmas Town, a place that reminded him more of his mother’s realm and less of his father’s, as Halloween Town did. It was lively and colorful and he wanted to show it to his people.
But his plans took everything down a darker path than he ever intended. Rather than succeeding in a new holiday, he nearly destroyed it. He went back to his own home with new purpose, new determination and appreciation for Halloween Town. He knew his place, as his parents had come to learn theirs and the danger that could ensue if any of them stepped out of their place.
But there was another ruler of another Underworld that did not appreciate the presence of Halloween Town. Hades, lord of the dead in another sense. He destroyed the loophole that Jack’s mother had created for the dead to find refuge, angry that it disturbed his own route through death that he had created. But rather than the destruction sending them all to thee land of the forgotten, they were dumped back into the human world. They found themselves in Paradise, alive, some of them for the first time. Most of them struggle to understand life in the mortal world, to understand the rules of it. It’s been a year since, though, and Jack has opened a funeral home to give most of them a place to be. He hasn’t seen his parents since being dumped in the living world, though he looks forward to every dia del muerte in hopes of seeing them again.
Possible Connections
Hades Kronos - The god that destroyed Jack’s home
Sally Finklestein - His secretary and good friend
Hans West - A mortician he often works with
