Even the people I think I like, if I stop and think about it, they all have things that make me uncomfortable. There’s not a single person I truly like. I’m wondering if that’s why I’m being drained without realizing it. If it’s why I always feel alone.. and also as if I’ve been abandoned. I’ve decided to try finding someone like that. Even if the other person blows hot and cold, I won’t let myself sway. I’m going to just keep liking them. Wouldn’t that be better than dealing with people without any purpose? I want to try living differently.

My Liberation Notes gets women’s longing so right, while also locating it in the everyday. Because that is how loneliness is experienced, not as the main character of a film in a big city or as a solo traveller. But on the walk back from work, while folding laundry, on waking up from a nap.

People are scared of thunder and lightning, but strangely I find them calming. “The world might finally come to an end… as I wished.” It feels like I’m stuck, but I don’t know how to get out. That’s probably why I hope everything ends all at once. “I’m not unhappy but I’m not happy either. I wouldn’t care if the world ended now. Everyone is on their way to their graves, so why everyone is so happy and excited?” Sometimes, I think that people who are damaged are much more honest than those who live their lives happily.

Dramas of 2019-2021
Hotel De Luna - such a soft summer favorite! a unique concept touching on the nature of life and death. the FIREFLY and tree motifs were beautifully executed, and of course IU being absolutely stunning in every shot helped. A great ensemble characters with insightful backgrounds, and the flashbacks were a STUNNING insight into Korean history. BUT leads did not have the most chemistry, and the treatment of the second lead was lackluster compared to the buildup. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Black Dog - Teacher drama that explored the unfair expectations and demanded sacrifice of the job, the bitter sweetness of watching students grow, develop relationships and leave, the ridiculously strict hierarchy of seniority and tenure, and the inevitable red tape of school administration. As someone in the profession, it hit incredibly close to home ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Search WWW: I cannot believe I missed adding this at the start of this list. Since Hello My 20’s, I had been craving a female ensemble cast, and this delivered. Rather than bumbling 20 somethings, this drama thrust me into the world of powerful women who are far past rosy eyed youth. The three female leads are secure, intelligent, powerful, and incredibly tender and vulnerable women. Their ambition, drive, and selfish pursuit of of their own happiness was at the center of the narrative. As a women, you forget that life doesn’t end at 30, or at marriage, or at motherhood. This drama gives a peek at an alternate path. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Itaewon Class - Starts with an absolutely GUT WRENCHING first two episodes, beautiful portrayal of found family and the effects of abuse, societal commentary on sexuality, gender identity, RACE (a first for a drama), and class mobility. Of course, it also intertwined the sweet sweet melancholy of unrequited love. Strangely I think I would have preferred if the leads had not gotten together. It felt a bit forced and awkward, and realistically the people we love sometimes just don't love us back. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
It’s Okay Not to Be Okay - the VISUALS! The incorporation of fairy tales, beautiful art, and poignant messages. Commentary on mental health, the fact that no one is magically fixed, we just learn to cope and love ourselves and those around us. The chemistry of the leads was just... palpable in every shot. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hospital Playlist - I did not give this drama the attention it deserved and skipped over a lot of it. Nevertheless, its beauty and grace in portraying the very human nature of its ensemble doctor cast was impossible to miss. Also the winter bear couple WON the award for the most visceral portrayal of what I thought was unrequited love. The last two minutes however had me gut wrenched by the absolute pining and yearning that had been slowly burning between the two. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Record of Youth - This had so much potential. Park Bo Gum delivers a heartbreaking performance. The family dynamics were complicated and messy but so very real. I had high hopes for the female lead, but she seemed to veer off in a strange direction in the end. Did not/could not finish it. One of those dramas that would have been masterful if ended early. ⭐️⭐️
She Would Never Know - One of the few drama’s I managed to finish in 2021. It wasn’t anything stellar so to speak, but I did enjoy the palpable portrayal of unrequited love BOTH WAYS (are we seeing a theme? I love heartache). Our leads had a great build up that surprisingly led to not so explosive chemistry. The situations and misunderstandings were a bit much, but overall thanks to the visuals and acting performances of the cast it was an enjoyable watch all the way through. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Run On - This… was such a breath of fresh air?? I wouldn’t say it was the most riveting watches but the leads were just so compelling. The storyline outside of them was a little shaky (but to be honest I also wasn’t paying much attention) but they themselves had such an interesting dynamic. The male lead was… so frustratingly hot and oblivious. It was worth the watch if only for a chance to see a different kind of romantic development. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
True Beauty - High expectations but I dropped it once the leads got together. In the webtoon they never did, which is what led to the growth and development of their characters. Sticking them together by episode 11 was a strange and poorly thought out decision. Also, the second lead was 1000x more compelling, which is one thing that was also very much the case in the webtoon, but the writing for him was 1000x worse in this drama. ⭐️⭐️
Vincenzo - Ok everyone LOVES this one. I could not get into it, and ultimately got spoiled for me anyway. ⭐️
Law School - This drama was everything “How to Get Away with Murder” should have been!! Such a well packaged crime/law show with an amazing ensemble cast. No single storyline or character was too overwhelming. I will say there were some plot points that were a bit loose, but I also skipped around a bit so that could be on me. The real highlight of the story was 100% Yeesul’s trial, her whole storyline was heartbreaking and was weaved in a way that made it seamlessly fit into a murder mystery. I literally cheered and cried at the verdict, and so did many other watchers. Similar to the other ensemble show I have covered, there was a small (though pretty open ended) love line that added some soft sweetness to the show. Overall, a unique and enjoyable watch. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Doom at Your Service - So lovely and so heartbreaking. The plot manages to pull together something wholly unique yet familiar in the realm of two opposing beings falling in love. We have every trope you could want: enemies to lovers, sharing a bed, soulmates, first love, all written in so masterfully. I felt fully invested in the joys and pains of each and every character, and this drama reminds us of a simple bittersweet truth: Our time is limited, and we must make each and every moment count. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
MINE - I honestly didn’t think id get another ensemble female cast like Search:WWW, much less one that would make me FEEL as much as that drama did. MINE tangles the usual messy strings of marriage, class differences, amnesia, cheating and yet still manages to be one of so few truly feminist dramas EVER produced. We have beautiful lgbtq representation, and just so much solidarity and friendship between the four main women in the cast. Spoiler alert: the drama ends with TWO women who were pit against each other raising a child together, an unexpected but oh so welcome twist from dramas with similar premises. Overall, a big win. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
